Physical Properties Analysis of the High-Tech Fibers for Fishing Gear Materials 1. Tensile Strength of the High-tech Fibers (어구재료용 신소재섬유의 물성분석 - 1 . 신소재섬유의 인장강도 -)

  • In order to analysis the tensile properties of the high-tech fibers for fishing gear materials. tensile strength was tested on raw materials, single yarns and netting twines(plied yarns)made of nylon, kevlar 29 and techmilon respectively. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The tensile stress and tenacity of unknotted single yarns in dry and wet conditions were 3 to 3.5 times greater in the high-tech fibers than in nylon. But the elongation of the high-tech fibers was about 15% of that in nylon. 2. The tensile strength of knotted single yarns in dry and wet conditions was arranged in order of as follows : techmilon. kelver 29, and nylon. The ratio of knot strength to tensile strength, knot efficiency, was the highest in nylon. 3. The tensile strength of unknotted netting twines in dry and wet conditions was 2.3 to 2.5 times greater in the high-tech fibers than in nylon. 4. The tensile strength of knotted netting twines in dry and wet conditions was arranged in order of as follows : techmilon, kevlar 29, nylon. The knot efficiency was the highest in nylon.

Analysis of various composite patches effect on mechanical properties of notched Al-Mg plate

  • In this study, the effect of various adhesively bonded composite patches on mechanical properties of notched Al-Mg alloy plates was analyzed. For this purpose firstly, the un-notched and notched specimens were fabricated from 5086 Al-Mg alloys which have been used in armor-plated military vehicles. The surface notches as a flaw were machined with circular cutting tool to form notch aspect ratio a/c=0.15 and notch-to-thickness ratios a/t=0.5 in the radial direction on the test specimens. Then, various composite patches which reinforced by glass, carbon and Kevlar fibers were bonded adhesively at elliptically surface notches. Finally, experimental measurements conducted by applying tensile static loading. The experimental results showed that repairing with composite patches with order of carbon, glass and Kevlar fibers have remarkable effect on tensile strength of the notched plate. Also the finite element models were developed using Abaqus/Explicit code to predict the tensile strength and elongation of unrepaired notched specimen and specimen repaired by carbon fiber composite patch. The comparison between numerical and experimental results showed good agreement between them and proved the accuracy of numerical modeling.

  • As the space debris in the satellite orbit increases, the risk of collision between the currently operating satellites and the space debris is continuously increasing. Therefore, in this study, we designed one-degree-of-freedom capture device using simple deployment mechanism. The capture device consists of four link groups connected with net. To increase the reliability, each link group is connected to one driving part so that the total degree of freedom is 1. In addition, the links were stowed on each side of the satellites so that they would not affect the janitor satellite mission. Finally, to confirm the possibility of deployment in the space environment, we carried out deployment experiments in water similar to the microgravity environment, and confirmed the deployment of capture device and the possibility of capturing target satellite.

  • A composition brake shoe composed of iron, graphite, kevlar, barium sulphate, etc. was developed for Diesel locomotives. The density distribution of the shoe depends on groove shapes of the shoe (or punch shape). In this study, we investigated the influence of the punch shape on the density distribution, stresses, etc. The inclination of the groove exerts more influence on the density distribution than the groove filet radius.

  • Since the discovery of liquid crystallinity by Reinitzer [1] in 1988 as he studied the melting behavior of cholesteryl benzoate, anisotropic structural ordering in fluid phases has been of considerable interest to chemists, physicists and other scientists. Polymers which exhibit liquid crystallinity either in solution (lyotropic) or in the neat state upon heating (thermotropic) have both theoretical and practical importance [2]. Du Pont's Kevlar, a high modulus polyamide fiber spun from a lyotropic solution, is a prime example of such an application.

  • In conventional heating, the heat source causes the molecules to react from the surface toward the center so that successive layers of molecules heat in turn. In the microwave heating, which is produced a volume heating effect, all molecules are set in action at the same time.   • 본고는 지뢰 방호복을 개발, 국산화하기 위해 먼저 방탄소재 구성방법에 관하여 실험한 결과이다. 기존의 여러 겹의 파라-아라미드(Para-aramid)나 단순히 파라-아라미드와 폴리 에틸렌 필름(Polyethlene film)을 조합한 소재구성과는 달리 케블라 파이버(Kevlar fiber)로 만들어진 펠트(felt)를 첨가하여 방탄원리 및 특성을 고려한 구성으로 방호복의 중량을 줄이면서 착용자로 하여금 유연성과 동작성을 향상시켜 임무수행과 안전성을 높일 수 있는 방호복을 개발하고자 하였다. 1) Para-aramid(내 충격열) + Flex-felt(충격 에너지 흡수) + Para-aramid(backface Polyethylene film(에너지 분산 극대)+Para-aramid(내 마찰열, backface순으로 소재를 배열함으로써 기존의 Para-aramed 36겹에 대하여 Para-aramid13겹, Polyethylene film 13겹, 그리고 펠트 1겹으로 동일한 방호성능을 얻었다. 2) 새로운 소재 구성 방법 에 의 한 방탄소재는 동일한 방호성능을 갖는 기존의 소재 구성 방법 에 따른 방탄소재 보다 중량에서 34-l9% ,더 가벼운 것으로 나타나 방호복 구성시 유연성이나 동작성에 유리 할 것으로 사료된다. 3) NIJ-STD-0101.03에서 의 Armor type II에 해당하는 시편 I의 방호한계속도로 구한 운동 에너지량은 154.4J Armor type III-A에 해 당하는 시편II의 방호한계속도로 구한 운동 에너지 량은 183.0J로 나타나 두 시편 모두 5m의 거리에서 M16Al지뢰의 0.032~0.044g사이 의 파편에 대해서 50%의 관통확률을 갖는 것으로 나타났다.

  • This paper presents the impact damage behavior of filament wound composite vessels and the effect of surface protective materials on their impact resistance. Using an instrumented impact testing machine, a series of impact tests was performed on the base panels and the protected panels (panels with surface protective materials of rubber, kevlar/epoxy or glass/epoxy laminates) that were cut from the full scale vessel. And the impact damage parameters were used to identify the effect of protective materials on the damage resistance of composite vessels. Damage resistance of the composite vessels was considerably affected by the protective materials regardless of the shape of the indenters. Among the protective materials, glass/epoxy laminates was the most effective mean for improving the damage resistance of composite vessels.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce a method to predict the case thermal insulation charred and erosion thickness as a function of the exposure time to combustion gases and in solid rocket motors. The sizing of the insulator requires a good estimation of the thermal and mechanical loads at the wall. The method is particularly suitable for internal insulation areas subjected to high radiative, convective heat fluxes and $Al_2O_3$ slag pool. The mathematical approach and lab-scale experiment were intentionally simplified in order to obtain some simple and rapid relationships particularly useful for trade-off studies and thermal insulation preliminary design. The method was utilized to compute the charred and erosion thicknesses of the insulation on the aft chamber domes. A comparison between theoretical and experimental insulator char thicknesses of the motor insulation is reported, indicating the applicability of the predictive method employed.
