A Study on Combustion Performance by the Shape of Slit of the Canted Slit Type Pintle Injector (기울어진 슬릿을 가지는 핀틀 분사기의 슬릿 형상에 따른 연소성능에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, combustion tests were performed to investigate performance characteristics of a canted slit-type pintle injector engine which uses kerosene and liquid oxygen as propellants. The number of slits, slit angle and blockage factor were chosen as design variables of the pintle injector. ${\Delta}SR$ was newly defined as the difference of skip ratio caused by both sides of the tip of the canted slit. The experimental results showed that optimal combustion was performed when the blockage factor is about 1 and the difference is less than 0.26.

  • Three methods of nozzle flow analysis, frozen-equilibrium, shifting-equilibrium and non-equilibrium approaches, were used to rocket nozzle flow, those were coupled with the methods of computational fluid dynamics code. For a design of high temperature rocket nozzle, chemical equilibrium analysis which shares the same numerical characteristics with frozen flow analysis can be an efficient design tool for predicting maximum thermodynamic performance of the nozzle. In this study, shifting-equilibrium flow analysis was carried out for the 30 $ton_f$-class KARl liquid rocket engine nozzle together with frozen flow. The performance evaluation based on the 30 $ton_f$-class KARl LRE nozzle flow analyses will provide an understanding of the thermochemical process in the nozzle and performances of nozzle.

  • Firing tests have been performed for a 30 tonf-class full-scale regeneratively cooled combustion chamber. It was the first model which has welded construction of the injection head and the combustion chamber. A number of firing tests have been performed to evaluate combustion efficiency, regenerative cooling performance and durability of the combustor. This paper describes the results of firing tests performed at the design and off-design conditions which correspond to the chamber pressure of 60 bar, 68 bar respectively and the O/F ratio of 2.5 and 2.8 respectively. The data at each test condition have provided successful results in terms of combustion performance, combustion stability and durability. The tests are considered to be quite meaningful in the sense that the technologies for kerosene regeneratively cooled combustion chamber are successfully proven.

  • The combustion test results of the sub-scale combustor having dual swirl injector with internal mixing for a liquid rocket engine are described. The sub-scale combustor uses liquid oxygen(LOx) and kerosene as propellants and has an injector head, an ablative material combustor wall and a water cooled nozzle. The injector head has LOx manifold, fuel manifold, fire face plate, one center swirl injector and 18 main swirl injectors of internal mixing. The combustion tests were successfully performed at design and off-design points without any damages on the injectors. Combustion characteristics velocity of 1756m/s was measured at design point. High frequency combustion instability was not observed but low frequency pulsations occurred at off-design conditions.

  • In this study, the numerical analysis of propellant supply manifold of a sub-scale model combustor with the same combustion and acoustic resonance conditions as the real combustor was carried out. The analysis of the results is based on the shape of the manifold and the number and type of inflow channels. The manifold form of the main propellant was rounded so that the recirculation area was small and easy to manufacture. The liquid oxygen mainfold included a distributor to uniformly supply the flow, and since the kerosene manifold was directly in contact with the flame side, the inflow channel was formed at a radial $360^{\circ}$ so as to minimize the recirculation region. The liquid nitrogen manifold was configured as a radial inflow channel to reduce the velocity difference near the injector.

For a design of high temperature rocket nozzle, chemical equilibrium analysis which shares the same numerical characteristics with frozen flow analysis can be an efficient design tool for predicting maximum thermodynamic performance of the nozzle. Frozen fluid analysis presents the minimum performance of the nozzle because of no consideration for the energy recovery. On the other hand, the case of chemical-equilibrium analysis is able to forecast the maximum performance of the nozzle due to consideration for the energy recovery that is produced for the fast reaction velocity compared with velocity of moving fluid. In this study, using the chemical equilibrium flow analysis code that is combined the modified frozen-equilibrium and the chemical-equilibrium. In order to understand the thermochemical characteristic components and the accompanying energy recovery, shifting-equilibrium flow analysis was carried out for the 30 $ton_f$-class KARI liquid rocket engine nozzle together with frozen flow. The performance evaluation based on the 30 $ton_f$-class KARI LRE nozzle flow analyses will provide an understanding of the thermochemical process in the nozzle and performances of nozzle.

  • In this study, preliminary design of a high-altitude test facility (HATF) was performed to simulate the high-altitude environment using a rocket engine that liquid oxygen and kerosene were used as the propellant. Experimental facility consists of vacuum chamber, supersonic exhaust diffuser, heat exchanger, ejector and gas generator. The vacuum chamber was simulated and maintained high-altitude environmental pressure by supersonic exhaust diffuser. Combustion gas of the rocket engine was cooled by water at heat exchanger after that the mixed gas was emitted to the air by ejector. The ejector which was operated by the steam generator using 75% ethanol and liquid oxygen as propellants and water for steam maintains a vacuum condition.

  • In the development process of a fuel-rich gas generator using kerosene and LOx for a 30 tonf class liquid rocket engine, a heat damage occurred at the LOx post of swirl coaxial injectors used in the gas generator and the problem has been examined. To prevent the heat damage, injectors are redesigned to have an increased recess while maintaining internal mixing, which minimizes recirculation region to prevent anchoring of the flame in the recirculation region. The combustion test results of the sub-scale gas generator showed that this scheme can prevent heat damage of the LOx post in the swirl coaxial injectors of the fuel-rich gas generator.

  • Cold flow and ignition tests were performed for a technology demonstration model of a 75-tonf thrust chamber which is a candidate liquid rocket engine for a next Korea Space Launch Vehicle. The test facility was modified to support the new concepts of the thrust chamber such as ignition system, film cooling and LOx leading supply. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the supply pipelines, thrust chamber and igniter as well as the filling time of the propellants were obtained through the cold flow tests on the LOx and kerosene and the ignition cyclogram was determined using the results. The ignition test was successfully accomplished according to the cyclogram and therefore, a basic information was obtained for further hot firing tests.

  • Firing tests have been carried out for a technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is to be used on the liquid rocket engine of a Korean space launch vehicle. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength. Through the low pressure firing tests of 75-tonf-class channel cooling thrust chamber, operability and stability at the ignition and combustion phases were confirmed. Additionally it was foreseen that the 75-tonf-class thrust chamber would satisfy the performance requirements.
