Context dependent fusion (CDF) is a fusion algorithm that combines multiple outputs from different classifiers to achieve better performance. CDF tries to divide the problem context into several homogeneous sub-contexts and to fuse data locally with respect to each sub-context. CDF showed better performance than existing methods, however, it is sensitive to noise due to the large number of parameters optimized and the innate linearity limits the application of CDF. In this paper, a variant of CDF using support vector machines (SVMs) for fusion and kernel principal component analysis (K-PCA) for context extraction is proposed to solve the problems in CDF, named CDF-SVM. Kernel PCA can shape irregular clusters including elliptical ones through the non-linear kernel transformation and SVM can draw a non-linear decision boundary. Regularization terms is also included in the objective function of CDF-SVM to mitigate the noise sensitivity in CDF. CDF-SVM showed better performance than CDF and its variants, which is demonstrated through the experiments with a landmine data set.

When the spatial information of each location is given specifically as coordinates it is popular to use the geographically weighted regression to incorporate the spatial information by assuming that the regression parameters vary spatially across locations. In this paper, we relax the linearity assumption of geographically weighted regression and propose a geographically weighted least squares-support vector machine for estimating geographically weighted mean by using the basic concept of kernel machines. Generalized cross validation function is induced for the model selection. Numerical studies with real datasets have been conducted to compare the performance of proposed method with other methods for predicting geographically weighted mean.

Recently, support vector learning attracts an enormous amount of interest in the areas of function approximation, pattern classification, and novelty detection. One of the main reasons for the success of the support vector machines(SVMs) seems to be the availability of global and sparse solutions. Among the approaches sharing the same reasons for success and exhibiting a similarly good performance, we have KFD(kernel Fisher discriminant) approach. In this paper, we consider the problem of function approximation utilizing both predetermined basis functions and the KFD approach for regression. After reviewing support vector regression, semi-parametric approach for including predetermined basis functions, and the KFD regression, this paper presents an extension of the conventional KFD approach for regression toward the direction that can utilize predetermined basis functions. The applicability of the presented method is illustrated via a regression example.

Statistical learning theory has three analytical tools which are support vector machine, support vector regression, and support vector clustering for classification, regression, and clustering respectively. In general, their performances are good because they are constructed by convex optimization. But, there are some problems in the methods. One of the problems is the subjective determination of the parameters for kernel function and regularization by the arts of researchers. Also, the results of the learning machines are depended on the selected parameters. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for objective determination of the parameters of support vector clustering which is the clustering method of statistical learning theory. Using evolutionary algorithm and bootstrap method, we select the parameters of kernel function and regularization constant objectively. To verify improved performances of proposed research, we compare our method with established learning algorithms using the data sets form ucr machine learning repository and synthetic data.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of an open architecture CNC system for Wire-EDM, with a consideration of the difference between Wire-EDM and NC cutting machines. Recent open architecture controller(OAC) related research results could be applied to directly access Wire-EDM systems at the CNC level. However, previous research about OAC is mostly aimed at NC cutting machines such as milling or lathes, and hence these results are inadequate to apply to Wire-EDM. To close the gap between previous general research on OAC and Wire-EDM specific needs, an open architecture NC model for Wire-EDM composed of a synchronization kernel and a NC functional module is proposed. Based on the control information flow and Wire-EDM specific machining process, the conceptual CNC model and the detailed implementation model for Wire-EDM is suggested.

Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of machines are gaining importance in the industry because of the need to increase reliability and to decrease possible loss of production due to machine breakdown. By comparing the nitration signals of a machine running in normal and faulty conditions, detection of faults like mass unbalance, shaft misalignment and bearing defects is possible. This paper presents a novel approach for applying the fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. To detect multiple faults in rotating machinery, a feature selection method and support vector machine (SVM) based multi-class classifier are constructed and used in the faults diagnosis. The results in experiments prove that fault types can be diagnosed by the above method.

Corporate credit rating analysis has drawn a lot of research interests in previous studies, and recent studies have shown that machine learning techniques achieved better performance than traditional statistical ones. This paper applies support vector machines (SVMs) to the corporate credit rating problem in an attempt to suggest a new model with better explanatory power and stability. To serve this purpose, the researcher uses a grid-search technique using 5-fold cross-validation to find out the optimal parameter values of kernel function of SVM. In addition, to evaluate the prediction accuracy of SVM, the researcher compares its performance with those of multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), case-based reasoning (CBR), and three-layer fully connected back-propagation neural networks (BPNs). The experiment results show that SVM outperforms the other methods.

Error Correcting Output Codes (ECOC) can improve generalization performance when applied to multicategory classification problem. In this study we propose a new criterion to select hyperparameters included in ECOC scheme. Instead of margins of a data we propose to use the probability of misclassification error since it makes the criterion simple. Using this we obtain an upper bound of leave-one-out error of OVA(one vs all) method. Our experiments from real and synthetic data indicate that the bound leads to good estimates of parameters.

In this paper we propose a mixed-effects least squares support vector regression (LS-SVR) for longitudinal data. We add a random-effect term in the optimization function of LS-SVR to take random effects into LS-SVR for analyzing longitudinal data. We also present the model selection method that employs generalized cross validation function for choosing the hyper-parameters which affect the performance of the mixed-effects LS-SVR. A simulated example is provided to indicate the usefulness of mixed-effect method for analyzing longitudinal data.
