  • The total yield of Pinus koraiensis stands was reviewed along forest function by using goal programming, which is one of the operations research techniques. The 4 kinds of management goals are set to identify timber production in the Research Forest of Kangwon National University. As a result, scenario 1 was estimated the best timber production over 2,073 ha area and also 588 ha in the third quarter was showed the most timber harvest. The rate of timber harvest was separated by 10 to 50 percent in non-timber forest function in the scenario 1 and that model was applied to the Research Forest of Kangwon National University. The structure of the area and volume is showed to be balanced quarterly when rate of timber harvest at 10 to 20 percent.

  • This paper assesses the stmpage value of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis) stands in the Research Forest of Kangwon National University. Assessment was done by means of the cost value method (Faustmann formula) for age class I, Glaser method for age class II-V, and inversion market method for age class over VI. Generally the value of stumpage is calculated by the inversion market method in the market. However, immature trees and middle age class trees are not assessed in market, and the Korean forest is not old enough to harvest. So, when forests are damaged by attacks from forest fire, blight and harmful insects, the forest cannot be compensated for the loss from the government or insurance company. For this reason, the value of all-age class trees are calculated by using appropriate methods. As a result, the value of age I class stands (0.3 ha) is calculated as 1,786,305 (won), age II-Vclass stands (22.1 ha) 206,677,975 (won) and age VI class and over stands (24.8 ha) 523,789,603 (won).

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the non-timber forest functions of the Research Forest area of Kangwon National University. In this study, forest recreation function was investigated through survey method answered by forest management experts. The evaluation factors for forest recreation function were separated into external and internal factors. Each factor was classified into intermediate element and detailed element. Therefore in this study, the evaluation factors of forest recreation function were divided into two groups which are the potential of external factors and the suitability of internal factors. Potential of the external factors were divided into accessibility, location, landscape and induction factors while the suitability of internal factor was divided into stand structure, forest structure and human impact. The priority of the potential of external factors was in order that location, accessibility, induction factors and landscape. The most important factors for the location, accessibility, induction and landscape factors are based on regional characteristics.

  • Many species, cultivars, and hybrids in Populus have been introduced and developed by the scientists of Department of Forest Genetic Resources, Korea Forest Research Institute in Korea. P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, P. euramericana, P. nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii, P. koreana ${\times}$ P. nigra var. italica, and P. davidiana have been studied from many aspects, i.e., genetics, breeding, physiology, propagation, silviculture, biomass production, biotechnology and phytoremediation. These precedent results will provide a sound basis for a newly-arising research on short-rotation coppice as one of renewable resources and phytoremediation plants. It was found that there were many promising varieties and clones for these purposes. However, minute analysis on specific gravity and caloric values for those plants should be followed under several silvicultural and rotational systems.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physical properties of wood chip for fuel processing with woody biomass. Seven species are selected and processed for testing physical properties by 3-type wood chippers which are commonly used in Korea. Wood chips produced by self-propelled drum chipper and fixed type wood chipper equipped with separator were uniform in size and shape. It was shown that the bulk density of produced wood chips was decreased with increasing the wood chip layer thickness, and oak chips prepared by self-propelled drum chipper and fixed type wood chipper showed the highest bulk density.

  • Lignocellulosic biomass has recalcitrant characteristics against chemical and biological conversion due to its structural heterogeneity and complexity. The pretreatment process to overcome these recalcitrant properties is essential, especially for the biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. In recent years, pretreatment methods using ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as the green solvent has attracted great attention because of their advantages such as easy recovery, chemical stability, temperature stability, nonflammability, low vapor pressure, and wide liquids range. However, there are some limitations such as high viscosity, poor economical feasibility, etc. to be solved for practical use. This paper reviewed the research activities on the pretreatment effect of various ILs including DESs and their co-solvents with organic solvents on the enzymatic saccharification efficiency of lignocellulosic biomass and the nanocellulose preparation from the pretreated products.
