We propose a three-year Key Science Program (KSP) consisting of VLBI monitoring observations and single dish (SD) rapid response observations (RRO). The VLBI monitoring observations are comprised of ten 24-hr observations per year (every month) of about 30 gamma-ray brigt active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with Korea VLBI Network (KVN) at 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz. The SD RROs may consist of twelve 7-hr observations per source (every week for 3 months after triggering) of gamma-ray flaring sources with two KVN SD telescopes at 22, 43, and 86 GHz in dual polarization. We expect one or two sources per year for the SD RROs. Gamma-ray flares of AGNs are known to be occured in innermost regions of relativistic jets which radiate in whole ranges of electromagnetic spectra due to synchrotron radiation, syschrotron self absorption, inverse-compton scttering, doppler boosting etc. Possible explanations of the gamma-ray flares in AGNs are a) shocks-in-jets propagating within jet flow and b) bending of the whole jets. For both cases, we should expect changes in polarization, luminosity, particle distribution, and structures of jets at mas-scale. The multifrequency simultaneous VLBI/SD observations with KVN are the best tool for detecting such changes correlated with gamma-ray flares. This KSP proposal aims to answer the fundamental questions about the basic nature of the flares of AGNs.
We have performed simultaneous observations at 22GHz and 43GHz on AGNs hosted by elliptical galaxies using KVN radio telescope. We have constructed the sample, based on two major surveys in radio and optical band, i.e. Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7, respectively. We restricted the redshift range 0.01 < z < 0.06 and the absolute magnitude Mr < -19.4 in order to satisfy volume limited sample. We also checked clear detection of four distinctive emission lines ([NII], [OIII], $H{\alpha}$, $H{\beta}$) so as to utilize on BPT diagram, distinguishing AGNs from star-forming galaxies. Elliptical galaxies have been selected by visual inspection making use of SDSS optical images. Then, we cross-matched the elliptical galaxies with FIRST detections. About 35% of the galaxies have been detected throughout KVN observations. We derive spectral index, applying the flux of different radio frequencies from FIRST (1.4GHz) and KVN (22GHz) and classify into steep, flat or inverted spectrum. We have found that most of the detected galaxies have flat spectrum while the rest of them have steep spectrum. This implies that a number of detected galaxies might have compact structure associated with the central region of the galaxies. The relation between black hole mass and radio luminosity has shown relatively tighter correlation in high frequency than in low frequency, which confirms that high frequency in radio band is appropriate to study the center of the galaxies.
High frequency peakers (HFPs) are promising candidates for young active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Their small physical scale (< 1 kpc) and radio spectrum peaked at high frequency (> 5 GHz) are suggestive that it has been only about $10^2-10^3$ years since a central massive black hole in their host galaxies was launched. Until recently however, long-term monitoring radio observations at frequencies which are high enough to cover the true peak of HFP candidates were rare. Therefore, previous HFP samples are often contaminated by blazars, which are highly variable, hence may show a similar radio spectrum as HFPs depending on the observational epoch. In this work, we challenge to identify genuine young AGNs by monitoring HFP candidates at high radio frequencies. We performed single-dish monitoring of 19 candidates in 18 epochs over 2.5 years at 22 and 43 GHz using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN). Also, using KaVA, a combined array of the KVN and the VERA in Japan, we carried out 22 GHz VLBI observations of two HFPs and one blazar selected from our sample in order to compare their parsec scale (milli-arcsecond scale) morphology. HFPs are expected to have double/triple features, so called compact symmetric objects, which are scaled-down versions of extended radio galaxies, while blazars typically show core-jet morphology. We discuss the properties of AGNs at their very early evolutionary stage based on the results of the KVN and KaVA observations.
We present the results of simultaneous observations of the H2O and SiO masers emitted from the circumstellar envelopes of the late-type stars. These observations have been carried out at the K and Q bands using KVN since 2014 August and were scheduled to test the feasibility of multi-frequency phase referencing analysis on the maser lines. In order to increase the accuracy of group delay solution in the fringe search on the continuum source, the IF channels were randomly distributed within the available bandwidth of 500 MHz in each band. The positions of all maser spots are relatively described with respect to the position of the reference continuum source through the source frequency phase referencing technique, and this provides the astrometric position accuracy. Therefore, the relative locations of the H2O maser spots with respect to the SiO maser spots are determined from our observations, and the capability of the simultaneous multi-band observation of KVN is proved to be powerful to study the maser pumping mechanism around the late-type stars.

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at millimeter wavelengths results in the highest angular resolutions achieved in astronomy and has a unique access to emission regions that are inaccessible with any other approach or at longer wavelengths. The simultaneous multi-frequency VLBI system in the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) is considered one of the most effective systems for compensating the atmospheric phase fluctuations, which is particularly bothersome at mm-VLBI. We have been demonstrating its performance and uniqueness at mm-VLBI observations. As a results, international VLBI partners from Japan, China, Australia and EU have expressed their interest on the KVN style simultaneous multi-frequency system. In this talk, we will report the activities for extending the simultaneous multi-frequency system to global VLBI network and introduce its science driver, measuring AGN core-shift effects.

We present the results of simultaneous observations of the H2O and SiO masers emitted from the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of the late-type stars. These observations have been carried out at the four frequency bands (K, Q, W and D bands) using KVN to apply the source frequency phase referencing (SFPR) analysis to the maser lines. We obtain the relative positions between the H2O and the SiO maser spots by using the SFPR method, which are very important to study the physical links between the inner and the outer parts of the CSEs of the late-type stars. The relative positions between the SiO maser spots of the different transitions are also obtained very accurately, which are very crucial to investigate the pumping mechanism of the SiO maser lines. From our results, the capability of the simultaneous multi-band observation of KVN is proved to be powerful to study the complicated physical environments of the CSEs and the stellar evolution of the late-type stars.
A simulation for the design of a $90^{\circ}$ differential phase shifter aimed toward Korean VLBI Network (KVN) 129 GHz band polarizer is described in this paper. A dual-circular polarizer for KVN 129 GHz band consists of a $90^{\circ}$ differential phase shifter and an orthomode transducer. The differential phase shifter is made up of a square waveguide with two opposite walls loaded with corrugations. Three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation has been performed to predict the $90^{\circ}$ differential phase shifter's characteristics. The simulation for the differential phase shifter shows that the phase shift is $90^{\circ}{\pm}3.3^{\circ}$ across 108-160 GHz and the return losses of two orthogonal modes are better than -30 dB within the design frequency band. According to the simulation results the calculated performance is quite encouraging for KVN 129 GHz band application.
