  • Control system modeling and optimal bending filter design for KSR-III (Korea Sounding Rocket III) are performed. Rigid rocket dynamics, aerodynamics, sloshing, structural bending, actuator dynamics, sensor dynamics and on-board computer characteristics are considered for control system modeling. Compensation for time-varying control system parameters is conducted by gain-scheduling. A filter to stabilize bending mode is designed using parameter optimization technique. Resultant attitude control system can satisfy required frequency domain stability margin.

  • An experimental and numerical study of aerodynamic charateristics of KSR-III and jet impingement on a deflector during launch has been conducted. To investigate aerodynamic characteristics of KSR-III configuration, wind tunnel tests using 6.4% scale model were performed by 4x4 feet ADD trisonic wind tunnel on the Mach number range of 0.4~3.8. Solutions of Three dimensional Euler equations were also obtained and compared with test result. For the study of KSR-III jet impingement flowfield on a deflector during launch operation, unsteady computation using CFD-FASTRAN was performed.

  • This paper concerns the spin-stabilization for the second stage of KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III). The error sources in the second stage are defined, and then the effect on attitude error of KSR-III is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the analysis, some conditions for optimal spinning frequency and optimal steady-spinning duration are suggested. Among several solutions, an optimal value can be determined in the point of minimum impact-point error. An approach to a sub-optimal solution is also suggested. Application to the KSR-III shows that a proper spinning frequency and a steady-spin duration to give the smallest impact-point error can be effectively determined.

  • This paper describes the development of gimbals engine actuation system for KSR(Korean Sounding Rocket)-III which performs the attitude control of pitch and yaw axes by thrust vector control of liquid propellant gimbals engine. The development requirements of configuration, performance and environment are introduced, and the principles and details of components and system development are discussed. The developed system successfully fulfilled its own performance and environmental evaluation. It will be planned to perform verification of interface and integration compatibility with other related systems, and then mounted on KSR-III as a flight hardware system.

  • The impactive Pressure wave induced by pyro valve in the pressurization system of KSR-III may result in fatal failure or malfunction of valves, so it is important to know the pressure wave characteristic in the pressurization system. An unsteady flow analysis in the simplified pressurization system was peformed by Finite difference method.

  • Flow computations have been conducted to study the impingement flowfield over the KSR-III flume deflector To validate Euler solver for the jet impingement flowfieid, the jet flow over a double wedge deflector have been calculated and showed reasonable agreement with experimental data. The transient flow behavior of flume over deflector have been investigated and the flume from the rocket nozzle proved to be getting out of the deflector safely and the thermal effect on the base region of rocket was not considerable.

  • Numerical analysis was carried out to investigate performance and combustion characteristics of KSR-III liquid rocket engine with several types of baffle. To evaluate the change of performance and combustion characteristics with several types of baffle, the first numerical calculations were performed about baffle tab, radial blade baffle, and hub-and-spoke baffle. Then radial blade and hub-and-spoke baffle were determined to design two types of the KSR-III engine with baffles. Also to investigate the effect of injector arrangements and baffle positions, two types of radial blade baffle were calculated then numerical calculations were carried out with changing axial length of radial blade I, II and hub-and-spoke baffle. While axial length of baffle effected to performance very small, injector arrangement effected to performance largely through calculations of radial blade I, II. From the viewpoint of combustion instability, hub-and-spoke baffle controlled combustion instability effectively and there was the performance of hub-and-spoke baffle between radial blade I and II.

  • Rocket propulsion systems generate very high-level noise (acoustic loads), which is due to supersonic jet emitted by rocket engine. In practice, the sound power level of rocket propulsion systems is over 180 dB. This high level noise excites rocket structures and payloads, so that it causes the structural failure and electronic malfunction of payloads. Prediction method of acoustic loads of rocket enables us to determine the safety of payloads. A popular prediction method is based on NASA SP-8072. This method was used to predict the acoustic loads of KSR-III rocket. Measurement of acoustic loads by KSR-III propulsion system was performed in the stage qualification test. The predicted results were compared with the measured ones.

  • Acoustic coupled combustion instability, which is one of the most undesirable phenomena in the development of liquid propellant rocket engine, can cause serious damage to a rocket itself, and must be avoided by all means. Unfortunately, KSR-III rocket went through combustion instability during engine start at the propulsion test article No.2. To resolve the problem, time sequence (cyclogram) has been changed, and baffle system has been applied. In consequence of change, stable combustion was achieved.
