Analysis on the Filling Mode of Liquid Oxygen to the Launch Vehicle Using Flowmaster (Flowmaster를 이용한 발사체 액체산소 충전 모드 해석)

  • The process of charging an oxidizer in the liquid propellant rocket can divide into the cooling of the oxidizer tank, the high flow charge, the small flow charge, and the replenishment charge for the correction of temperature. The oxidizer of the Naro(KSLV-I) first stage uses the liquid oxygen. And the flow rate and the temperature specification corresponding to each charge mode are presented for the requirement. The flow throttling valve and heat exchanger are installed in the oxidizer filling system in order to satisfy this kind of the flow rate and temperature requirement specification. In this research, by using the Flowmaster which is a commercial one-dimension thermo-fluidic analysis program, one dimensional flow system analyses was performed to predict the exact flow rate at each specific mode. Also, the flow rate correction sensitivity of the flow control valves was analytically determined to satisfy the flow condition refinement at each mode within the limited certification test.

  • Lithium-ion batteries providing high gravimetric energy density are rapidly replacing Ni-Cd and Ni-H2 in aerospace applications. The main advantage is the weight reduction of the battery system. Weight is a major concern in aerospace applications. Also, lithium-ion offer low thermal dissipation, high energy efficiency, and low cell cost. The Onboard battery module for KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle) contains 80 Sony US18650 cells configured as 10 strings in parallel, with each string containing 8 series connected cells. This allows to meet voltage and capacity requirements specified for the mission. In this paper design description and specifications of lithium-ion battery developed are presented. Qualification test flow is also shown to make sure the performance in the predicted space environment. Electrical performance was simulated by dedicated program, and verified with electronic load. Lastly, the capacity was proven on real equipment load assembly.

  • Although there are some technical reports on the example of Korea's first rocket, the Naro, there has been no studies on why there were two technical incidences in the space development programs which massive amount of physical and human resources were invested. For this, the objective of this study is to investigate the example of the Naro from the aspect of management and institutions as well as technical in terms of the responsibility of the R&D organization. Most important part in the responsibility of the R&D organization is the professional responsibility and it is difficult to attain the goals when they are diluted by political situations. Furthermore, this study also looked at the cause of the failure to exert righteous sovereign authority in the conflict with Russia from the discrepancy of goals between the authority and the agent, and studied efforts to prevent the recurrence of discrepancy.

  • The SINDA/FLUINT program is used as analysis tool. Thermal model and fluid model are applied for reliable results. By this analysis, the global requirements from System requirement review(SRR) is verified, and the detail requirement of each component is investigated. The results of this analysis is used to set up criterion for selecting proper components.

  • Liquid rocket engines of KSLV-II employ a turbopump feed system for propellants. A turbopump real-propellant test facility based on liquid oxygen and kerosene has been constructed for the experimental verification of the turbopump performance using the real media of propellants(i.e., LOX/Kerosene). The verification tests of sub-systems were performed such as LOX/kerosene feed system and alcohol burner system. Finally, the performance of the whole system was executed and verified through a sets of validation tests with the development model of the KSLV-II turbopumps. It has been confirmed that the test facility satisfies the operating conditions and time of the turbopump at the design and off-design performance test using real-propellant.

  • Acoustic load from rocket propulsion system is main source of random vibration working on the payload. To protect payload from this acoustic load, additional APS(acoustic protection system) is generally applied. Noise reduction capacity of APS can be verified through acoustic test and vibro-acoustic coupled analysis. This paper compared the results of acoustic test and vibro-acoustic coupled analysis about KSLV-I payload fairing with APS.

  • This paper has been studied the impact of the distance between the signal source and the antenna under test on the antenna measurements such as gain and pattern (Phase). The concept and principles of the far-field in the antenna measurement are reviewed at first. The analysis on the impact has been focused on the 11 m parabola antenna system which will be used in the ground telemetry station for tracking and receiving the S-band ($2200\~2400MHz$) signal of KSLV-I. Also, the impact of the distance on the tracking performance of the antenna system has been analyzed.

  • Acoustic characteristics of combustion chamber having various baffle configurations are numerically investigated by linear acoustic analysis to suggest reliable baffle specifications in first stage of KSLV-I. To determine the configuration of baffles, an acoustic modal analysis as well as the macroscopic analysis has been done. Hub has another effect of suppressing transverse acoustic mode by confining flow in baffled compartment over general effect of increase in acoustic damping of radial acoustic modes. So, a sufficient number of hub needs to be installed to obtain acoustic damping capacity. 3-blade configuration designed to suppress the first tangential mode has relatively low damping capacity, compared to 5 or 6-blade one. Optimum value of axial baffle length has been determined by comparing acoustic characteristics of combustion chamber having various baffle lengths.

  • A conceptual design for the movable roll vane system is done for the roll stability control of KSLV-I. The control effectiveness of the roll vanes is estimated using the numerical simulation. The hinge location is selected to minimize the torque requirement at the maximum dynamic pressure condition, and the maximum torque of 3.0 kN-m is found to be required to actuate the roll vanes for the entire range of operation. An electro-mechanical actuator system which is composed of a DC motor, the speed reducers, the battery package and the controller is designed using the given requirements, the maximum torque of 3.0 kN-m, the maximum deflection angle of 25 deg. and the maximum angular velocity of 30 deg/sec. More detailed design to make more compact and highly efficient system will be done in the future.

  • 2단 또는 3단형으로 설계되고 있는 KSLV-I 발사체의 단연결부는 직경의 변화에 따라 원뿔대(Truncated cone) 구조물이 필요하다. 원뿔대형 구조물이 발사체의 외피일 경우에는 일반적인 실린더형 동체와는 다르게 공력에 의한 버페팅(buffeting)과 공력가열 등이 추가적인 설계인자로 고려되어야 한다. 복합재료 샌드위치 구조물은 외피의 굽힘 강성이 크고, 일체성형으로 실린더형 혹은 원뿔대형 구좁물을 쉽게 제작할 수 있어 단연결부에 적용되고 있다. 또한 위성어댑터(Payload Adapter)등에도 사용되어 우주발사체에는 매우 일반적인 구조물이다. 복합재료 샌드위치 구조물의 제작과 정적시험을 통하여 구조 특성을 알아보았다. 일체형 샌드위치 구조물의 효율을 높이기 위해서는 프레임과의 체결부를 효율적으로 설계하여야 하며 하중의 종류에 따라서 면재의 적층각도가 중요함을 알 수 있었다.
