  • Two separate trials were conducted to determine the effects of uterine priming prior to first breeding and quantify any changes in the reproductive efficiency of gilts. In trial I twelve (12) gilts were randomly assigned to 3 treatments:T1:infusion of distilled water (control), T2: single infusion of killed semen (KS1), and T3: double infusion of killed semen (KS2). Each treatment had 4 breeding gilts which were bred by natural insemination (NI). In trial II, another set of 12 breeding gilts were randomly allotted to the same treatments and were subsequently bred by artificial insemination (AI). Infusions, through the use of AI catheters, were done during the $2^{nd}$ estrous cycle for T1 and T2, whereas infusions for T3 were made during the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ cycles. Regular breeding was subsequently made during the $3^{rd}$ estrous cycle. All gilts that returned to cycle were rebred within the 30-day period. In trial I (natural breeding), total piglets born was higher (p<0.05) in T2 (12.75 piglets) and T3 (11.75 piglets) than in the control (10.5 piglets). T3 obtained the highest (p<0.05) litter size (10.25 piglets) and heaviest litter weight (74.12 kg) at 28 days weaning, followed by T2 (9.80 piglets and 65.0 kg, respectively). The control yielded the lowest (p<0.05) litter size (7.50) and the lightest litter weight (47.00 kg) at weaning. For Trial II gilts (artificially inseminated), T3 gave higher (p<0.05) litter size born alive (10.88 piglets), total piglets born (11.72 piglets) and live litter weight at birth (15.30 kg) than those of T2 and the control. These results indicate that prebreeding intrauterine infusion of killed boar semen, either single or double, improved the reproductive performance of gilts.

  • This study was performed to narrow down the Sizing System for Female Adult's garments(KS K 0051) following age target and body shapes. The study was based on the sizing system and the anthropometric measurements, called Size-Korea, which were surveyed in the years 2003 and 2004. At first, the subjects of the survey were classified into 4 age groups, $18{\sim}24,\;25{\sim}34,\;35{\sim}49\;and\;50{\sim}59$, based on the most significant differences of body sizes. Secondly, the ranges of four key dimensions - height, bust, waist and hip-of normal sizes were identified through analyzing Rohrer index and percentile. The selected sizes within the ranges were grouped by the drop which was the subtraction of bust girth from hip girth. In conclusion, there was the most frequent drop for each age group; 9cm drop for the $18{\sim}24$ years old group, the 6cm drop for the $25{\sim}34$ years old and $35{\sim}49$ years old and 3cm drop for $50{\sim}59$ years old. The upper body garment sizes of the same drop and target ages could be merged to 10 to 12 sizes, which were remarkably smaller than the Female Adult garment sizing system, and further to 2-5 sizes, considering the percentile importance. However, $50{\sim}59$ years old group needed to be analyzed in different ways, because the number of subjects of normal size in the age decreased rapidly, that the normal sizes for them were very limited. In addition, the reference body sizes of each garment size were apparently different when they were compared to each age groups. These basic data for garment size specification could be usefully adapted for the apparel companies' own sizing system according to their age target and body shapes, to achieve efficient production and better fit.

  • PURPOSES : Infiltration of moisture, polluted material, and deicer into concrete, accompanied by freeze and thaw can cause significant deterioration of concrete pavement. In order to protect concrete from deterioration, it is necessary to prevent the infiltration of these concrete external materials. The moisture-repellent agent, which is a surface treatment and maintenance material added to concrete structures to render them water resistant, has advantages such as prevention of water infiltration and security against air permeation. Nano-coat, which is referred to as silicon hydride, is typically used as a moisture-repellent agent. Therefore, in this study, an attempt is made to use penetration-type Nano-coat as an alternative in order to evaluate its applicability through environmental resistance tests. METHODS : This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat, which can provide water repellency to concrete, in concrete pavements, through various environmental resistance tests such as freezing and thawing resistance, chloride ion penetration resistance, and surface scaling resistance tests. The applicability of penetration-type Nano-coat was demonstrated based on the specification of KS F 2711, KS F 2456, and ASTM C 672. RESULTS :In the case of penetration-type Nano-coat applied on sound concrete, an increase in concrete durability was demonstrated by the negligible chloride ion penetrability and the absence of scaling, as revealed by visual observation of the surface, after 50 cycles of scaling resistance test. In addition, test result of the application of penetration-type Nano-coat on deteriorated concrete established that concrete surface pretreated by grinding provided improved durability than non-treated concrete. CONCLUSIONS :This study indicates that penetration-type Nano-coat is applicable as an effective alternative, to increase the durability of concrete structures. In addition, it was known that pretreatment of deteriorated concrete surface, such as grinding, is required to improve the long-term performance of concrete pavement.

  • The pathogenic organisms occurred in cultured marine fishes in Kamak Bay were investigated from March to November in 1993. The samples were collected at 7 sampling stations once a month. Nine species of pathogenic organisms (Vibrio sp., Edwardsiella sp., Flexibacter sp., Streptococcus sp., Micrococcus sp., Caligus sp., Trichodina sp., Lymphocystis and Staphylococcus sp.) were identified as pathogenic organisms from four different species of fish (Sebastes schlegeli, Paralichthys olivaceus, lateolabrax japonicus and Pagrus major) collected in the study areas. Most of pathogenic organisms were found at over 20^{\circ}C$ of sea water temperature from June to October in 1993. On the test of drug sensitivity, Vibrio sp. (KS-9303) was sensitive to oxytetracycline and chloramphenicol ; Edwardsiella sp. (KP-9315) to oxytetracycline ; Flexibacter sp. (KP-9318) to oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol and oxolinic acid ; Streptococcus sp. (KP-9319) to erythromycin, chlorampheicol and oxytetracycline. However, all these 4 isolated bacteria were resistant to ampicilin, steptomycin, sulfamethoxazole and nitrofurazone.

  • Enviromental differences in gentamicin pharmacokinetics by using population pharmacokinetic methods were compared with 20 Korean patients and 24 Korean-American appendicitis patients. Two to six blood specimens were collected from all patients at the following times : just before a regularly scheduled infusion and at 0.5 hour after the end of a 0.5 hour infusion. Nonparametric expected maximum (NPEM) algorithm for population modeling was used. The estimated parameters were the elimination rate constant (K), the slope (KS) of the relationship between K versus creatinine clearance ($C_{cr}$), the apparent volume of distribution (V), the slope (VS) of the relationship between V versus weight, gentamicin clearance (CL) and the slope (CS) of the relationship between CL versus $C_{cr}$ and the V. The output includes two marginal probability density function (PDF), means, medians, modes, variance and CV%. The mean K (KS) were $0.402{\pm}0.129\;h^{-1}(0.00486{\pm}0.00197\;[h{\cdot}ml/min/1.73\;m^2]^{-1})$ and $0.411{\pm}0.135\;h^{-1}(0.00475{\pm}0.00180\;[h{\cdot}ml/min/1.73\;m^2]^{-1})$ for Korean and Korean-American populations, respectively. The mean V (VS) were not different at $14.3{\pm}3.6l(0.241{\pm}0.0511l/kg)$ and $15.1{\pm}3.84l(0.239{\pm}0.0492l/kg)$ for Korean and Korean-American populations, respectively (p>0.2). The mean CL (CS) were $5.68{\pm}1.69l/h(0.0714{\pm}0.0222l/kg[h{\cdot}ml/min/1.73\;m^2])$ and $5.70{\pm}1.77l/h(0.0701{\pm}0.0215l/kg[h{\cdot}ml/min/1.73\;m^2])$ for Korean and Korean-American populations, respectively. There were no enviromental differences in gentamicin pharmacokinetics between Korean and Korean-American appendicitis patients.

  • This study was designed to investigate the anti-diabetic effect and mechanism of Korean red ginseng extract through transcriptomics in C57BL/KsJ db/db mice. The db/db mice were randomly divided into six groups: diabetic control group (DC), red ginseng extract low dose group (RGL, 100 mg/kg), red ginseng extract high dose group (RGH, 200 mg/kg), metformin group (MET, 300 mg/kg), glipizide group (GPZ, 15 mg/kg) and pioglitazone group (PIO, 30 mg/kg), and treated with drugs once per day for 10 weeks. At the end of treatment, we measured blood glucose, insulin, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), triglyceride (TG), adiponectin, leptin, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA). RGL-treated group lowered the blood glucose and HbA1c levels by 19.6% and 11.4% compared to those in diabetic control group. In addition, plasma adiponectin and leptin levels in RGL-treated groups were increased by 20% and 12%, respectively, compared to those in diabetic control. Morphological analyses of liver, pancreas and epidydimal adipose tissue were done by hematoxylin-eosin staining, and pancreatic islet insulin and glucagon levels were detected by double-immunofluorescence staining. RGL-treated group revealed higher insulin contents and lower glucagon contents compared to diabetic control. To elucidate an action mechanism of Korean red ginseng, DNA microarray analyses were performed in liver and fat tissues, and western blot and RT-PCR were conducted in liver for validation. According to hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis of gene expression Korean red ginseng treated groups were close to metformin treated group. In summary, Korean red ginseng lowered the blood glucose level through protecting destruction of islet cells and shifting glucose metabolism from hepatic glucose production to glucose utilization and improving insulin sensitivity through enhancing plasma adiponectin and leptin levels.

  • SCM 21 and D.P steel were carburized in vacuum using prophane at a temperature ranging from 1228k to 1308k under a gas pressure ranging from 21.3kpa to 61.8kpa, and the following results were obrained. 1) D.P. steel has considerable efficiency in depressing the grain growth during the high temperature carburizing and it has fine structure even at 1268k for 14.4ks when carburizied. Therefore this steel is expected to be suitable for vacuum carburizing at a high temperature. 2) Case depth was increased as the carburizing temperature increases and it was 3.2mm at max, temperature of 1308k, for max, time of 14.4ks and under max, pressure of 61.8kpa. Thus vacuum-carburizing was considered effective for the materials which need case depth, which is necessary for machine structure use. 3) The rate of case depth of SCM 21 was faster than D.P. steel under same carburizing conditions and the increasing rate of the case depth was constant. 4) Case depth was increased as the gas pressure becomes high under same carburizing temperature. 5) Case carbon concentration, $C_s$, of SCM 21 obeys to a formula, $$C_s=kt^{1/2}+C_0$$ Where k is $2.15{\times}10^{-2}$($wt%.S^{-1/2}$) and this value is a little bit lower than that of SNCM 815.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to compare clinical results after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using the Attune and PFC Sigma knee designs and to investigate whether the use of the Attune prosthesis increased the risk of patellar injury in Asian patients. Materials and Methods: Three hundred knees that underwent TKA using Attune (group A) were compared to 300 knees that underwent TKA using PFC Sigma (group B). The Knee Society Knee Score (KS) and Function Score (FS), and range of motion (ROM) were compared. The residual patellar thickness was compared to evaluate the risk of patellar injury. Results: The postoperative KS and ROM of group A were better than those of group B (93.1 vs. 88.8, p<0.001 and $131.4^{\circ}$ vs. $129.0^{\circ}$, p=0.008, respectively). The postoperative FS did not differ significantly between the two groups (80.9 vs. 78.7, p=0.427). The residual patella was thinner in group A (14.8 mm vs. 15.7 mm, p=0.003), which made up a higher proportion of the high-risk group for patellar fractures with a residual thickness of <12 mm (7.5% vs. 2.1%, p=0.003). Conclusions: TKA using the Attune prosthesis provided more favorable clinical results than TKA using PFC Sigma. However, the risk of injury in the residual patella was increased with use of the Attune prosthesis in Asian patients.

  • The kinetic study of rifamycin B production in batch culture of Nocardia mediterranei was undertaken in part of our endeavor to optimize the fermentation condition. The growth parameters such as $\mu$$_{m}$ and Ks values for nitrogen source were evaluated by employing Monod equation. From the experiments, $\mu$$_{m}$ and Ks were 0.15hr$^{-1}$ and 8.35g/1, respectively. The growth kinetics in batch culture was found successfully interpreted by logistic law, i.e., the initial specific growth rate and the maximum cell mass concentration were determined as function of pH and both found to have maxima. For the production of rifamycin B, a non-growth associated production kinetics was employed and the specific productivity as a function of pH was found to have two maximum points. The yield coefficient and the specific productivity were calculated as mean values in production phase. Utilizing these experimental data as a function of pH, the optimal condition for the rifamycin B production was discussed with regad to the pH effect on the cell growth and production of the antibiotic. As a result, growth phase at pH 6.5 and production phase at pH 7.0 were found to be recommended.ded.
