  • This paper presents an approach to detect changes caused by urban development over a large area using KOMPSAT optical images. In order to minimize the radiometric dissimilarities between the images acquired at different times, we apply the grid-based rough radiometric correction as a preprocessing to detect changes in a large area. To improve the accuracy of the change detection results for urban development, we mask-out non-interest areas such as water and forest regions by the use of land-cover map provided by the Ministry of Environment. The Change Vector Analysis(CVA) technique is applied to detect changes caused by urban development. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a total of three study sites from Sejong City is constructed by combining KOMPSAT-2 images acquired on May 2007 and May 2016 and a KOMPSAT-3 image acquired on March 2014. As a result of the change detection accuracy evaluation for the study site generated from the KOMPSAT-2 image acquired on May 2007 and the KOMPSAT-3 image acquired on March 2014, the overall accuracy of change detection was about 91.00%. It is demonstrated that the proposed method is able to effectively detect urban development changes in a large area.

  • Satellite payload on-board date compression unit are use for saving date storage space and reducing time to transmit payload data to the ground station. The KOMPSAT-3 payload will generate higher data rate than KOMPSAT-2 due to its better ground sample distance capacity. High input data rate and limited output transmission data rate might lead excessive compression and degraded image quality. This paper presents a trade-off study about data storage capacity and compression parameters for estimated KOMPSAT-3 system.

  • Turbidity, the measure of the cloudiness of water, is used as an important index for water quality management. The turbidity can vary greatly in small river systems, which affects water quality in national rivers. Therefore, the generation of high-resolution spatial information on turbidity is very important. In this study, a turbidity retrieval model using the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3 and -3A (KOMPSAT-3/3A) images was developed for high-resolution turbidity mapping of Han River system based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. To this end, the top of atmosphere (TOA) spectral reflectance was calculated from a total of 24 KOMPSAT-3/3A images and 150 Landsat-8 images. The Landsat-8 TOA spectral reflectance was cross-calibrated to the KOMPSAT-3/3A bands. The turbidity measured by the National Water Quality Monitoring Network was used as a reference dataset, and as input variables, the TOA spectral reflectance at the locations of in situ turbidity measurement, the spectral indices (the normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference water index, and normalized difference turbidity index), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived atmospheric products(the atmospheric optical thickness, water vapor, and ozone) were used. Furthermore, by analyzing the KOMPSAT-3/3A TOA spectral reflectance of different turbidities, a new spectral index, new normalized difference turbidity index (nNDTI), was proposed, and it was added as an input variable to the turbidity retrieval model. The XGBoost model showed excellent performance for the retrieval of turbidity with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.70 NTU and a normalized RMSE (NRMSE) of 14.70% compared to in situ turbidity, in which the nNDTI proposed in this study was used as the most important variable. The developed turbidity retrieval model was applied to the KOMPSAT-3/3A images to map high-resolution river turbidity, and it was possible to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of turbidity. Through this study, we could confirm that the KOMPSAT-3/3A images are very useful for retrieving high-resolution and accurate spatial information on the river turbidity.

  • This paper had a purpose on analyzing result data from pan-sharpening, which have applied on the KOMPSAT-2 and -3 image. Particularly, the study focused on comparing each relative spectral response functions, which considers to cause color distortions of fused image. Two images from same time and location have been collected by KOMPSAT-2 and -3 to apply in the experiment. State-of-the-art algorithms of GIHS, GS1, GSA and GSA-CA were employed for analyzing the results in quantitatively and qualitatively. Following analysis of previous studies, GSA and GSA-CA methods resulted excellent quality in both of KOMPSAT-2/3 results, since they minimize spectral discordances between intensity and PAN image by the linear regression algorithm. It is notable that performances from KOMPSAT-2 and- 3 are not equal under same circumstances because of different spectral characteristics. In fact, KOMPSAT-2 is known as over-injection of low spatial resolution components of blue and green band, are greater than that of the PAN band. KOMPSAT-3, however, has been advanced in most of misperformances and weaknesses comparing from the KOMPSAT-2.

  • Arriving in the new space age, securing technology for fusion application of KOMPSAT-3·3A and global satellite images is becoming more important. In general, multi-sensor satellite images have relative geometric errors due to various external factors at the time of acquisition, degrading the quality of the satellite image outputs. Therefore, we propose a fine-image registration methodology to minimize the relative geometric error between KOMPSAT-3·3A and global satellite images. After selecting the overlapping area between the KOMPSAT-3·3A and foreign satellite images, the spatial resolution between the two images is unified. Subsequently, tie-points are extracted using a hybrid matching method in which feature- and area-based matching methods are combined. Then, fine-image registration is performed through iterative registration based on pyramid images. To evaluate the performance and accuracy of the proposed method, we used KOMPSAT-3·3A, Sentinel-2A, and PlanetScope satellite images acquired over Daejeon city, South Korea. As a result, the average RMSE of the accuracy of the proposed method was derived as 1.2 and 3.59 pixels in Sentinel-2A and PlanetScope images, respectively. Consequently, it is considered that fine-image registration between multi-sensor satellite images can be effectively performed using the proposed method.

  • The topographic volume estimation is carried out for the earth work of a construction site and quarry excavation monitoring. The topographic surveying using instruments such as engineering levels, total stations, and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers have traditionally been used and the photogrammetric approach using drone systems has recently been introduced. However, these methods cannot be adopted for inaccessible areas where high resolution satellite images can be an alternative. We carried out experiments using Kompsat-3/3A data to estimate topographic volume for a quarry and checked the accuracy. We generated DEMs (Digital Elevation Model) using newly acquired Kompsat-3/3A data and checked the accuracy of the topographic volume estimation by comparing them to a reference DEM generated by timely operating a drone system. The experimental results showed that geometric differences between stereo images significantly lower the quality of the volume estimation. The tested Kompsat-3 data showed one meter level of elevation accuracy with the volume estimation error less than 1% while the tested Kompsat-3A data showed lower results because of the large geometric difference.

  • Following the successful launch of KOMPSAT-3 in May 2012, KOMPSAT-5 in August 2013, and KOMPSAT-3A in March 2015 have succeeded in launching the integrated operation of optical, radar and thermal infrared sensors in Korea. We have established a foundation to utilize the characteristics of each sensors. In order to overcome limitations in the range of application and accuracy of the application of a single sensor, multi-sensor image fusion techniques have been developed which take advantage of multiple sensors and complement each other. In this paper, we introduce the development of software (InFusion) for multi-sensor image fusion and valued-added product generation using KOMPSAT series. First, we describe the characteristics of each sensor and the necessity of fusion software development, and describe the entire development process. It aims to increase the data utilization of KOMPSAT series and to inform the superiority of domestic software through creation of high value-added products.

  • Surface reflectance obtained by absolute atmospheric correction from satellite images is useful for scientific land applications and analysis ready data (ARD). For Landsat and Sentinel-2 images, many types of radiometric processing methods have been developed, and these images are supported by most commercial and open-source software. However, in the case of KOMPSAT 3/3A images, there are currently no tools or open source resources for obtaining the reflectance at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and top-of-canopy (TOC). In this study, the atmospheric correction module of KOMPSAT 3/3A images is newly implemented to the optical calibration algorithm supported in the Orfeo ToolBox (OTB), a remote sensing open-source tool. This module contains the sensor model and spectral response data of KOMPSAT 3A. Aerosol measurement properties, such as AERONET data, can be used to generate TOC reflectance image. Using this module, an experiment was conducted, and the reflection products for TOA and TOC with and without AERONET data were obtained. This approach can be used for building the ARD database for surface reflection by absolute atmospheric correction derived from KOMPSAT 3/3A satellite images.

  • With the constantly increasing demand of domestic and oversea satellite images, there is also a growing demand to rapidly acquire images after the satellite image collection planning of KOMPSAT-2/3/5. Therefore, it has been increasing to use the korea ground station and oversea ground station to keep pace with increased demand. The KARI is operating Data Ingestion System of the KOMPSAT-2/3 in Svalbard, where the satellite images have been received at least four or six times a day. The KARI is planning to operate oversea receiving system for KOMPSAT-5/3A. This paper introduces the polar data ingestion system operating in Norway, and presents the process of design and development for Polar Integration receiving system in preparation of multiple satellite operation.
