  • The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.

  • KARI has prepared Calibration and Validation activities for the KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2) MSC data that will be launched at the end of this year. Firstly, we divided the Cal/Val activities of it to four parts, Spatial, Spectral, Radiometric and Geometric, and defmed the detailed Cal/Val items from them. Secondly, Cal/Val targets have been defined and manufactured for the role of them. Thirdly, we have made the plan and the procedure for the Cal/Val items, developed the codes for them, studied more detailed method to do them, and trained the Cal/Val activities using the foreign satellite image data by ourselves. KARI has been now setting up the KOMPSAT-2 LEOP plan with the Cal/Val activities, and probably will finish the EOP Cal/Val activities for the KOMPSAT-2 MSC data by the next April or May.

  • GPS based orbit determination system for the KOMPSAT-2 has been developed. Two types of orbit determination software such as operational orbit determination and precise orbit determination are designed and implemented. GPS navigation solutions from on-board the satellite are used for the operational orbit determination and raw measurements data such as C/A code pseudo-range and L1 carrier phase for the precise orbit determination. Operational concept, architectural design, software implementation, and performance test are described.

  • Despite the ecological importance of seagrass beds, their distributional information in Korean coastal waters is insufficient. Therefore, we used hydroacoustic system to collect accurate bathymetry and classification of seagrass, and Kompsat-2 (4 m spatial resolution) image for detection of seagrass beds at Deukryang Bay, Korea. The accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification was evaluated using hydracoustic survey result using error matrix and Kappa value. The total area of seagrass beds from satellite image classification was underestimated compared to the hydroacoustic survey, estimated 3.9 and $4.5km^2$ from satellite image and hydroacoustic data, respectively. Nonetheless, the accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification over hydroacoustic-based method showing 90% (Kappa=0.85) for the three class maps (seagrass, unvegetated seawater and aquaculture). The agreement between the satellite image classification and the hydroacoustic result was 77.1% (the seagrass presence/absence map). From our result of satellite image classification, Kompsat-2 image is suitable for mapping seagrass beds with high accuracy and non-destructive method. For more accurate information, more researches with a variety of high-resolution satellite image will be preceded.

  • With the constantly increasing demand of domestic and oversea satellite images, there is also a growing demand to rapidly acquire images after the satellite image collection planning of KOMPSAT-2/3/5. Therefore, it has been increasing to use the korea ground station and oversea ground station to keep pace with increased demand. The KARI is operating Data Ingestion System of the KOMPSAT-2/3 in Svalbard, where the satellite images have been received at least four or six times a day. The KARI is planning to operate oversea receiving system for KOMPSAT-5/3A. This paper introduces the polar data ingestion system operating in Norway, and presents the process of design and development for Polar Integration receiving system in preparation of multiple satellite operation.

  • As the utility of an optical satellite image with a high spatial resolution (i.e., fine-scale) has been emphasized, recently, various studies of the land surface monitoring using those have been widely carried out. However, the usefulness of fine-scale satellite images is limited because those are acquired at a low temporal resolution. To compensate for this limitation, the spatiotemporal data fusion can be applied to generate a synthetic image with a high spatio-temporal resolution by fusing multiple satellite images with different spatial and temporal resolutions. Since the spatio-temporal data fusion models have been developed for mid or low spatial resolution satellite images in the previous studies, it is necessary to evaluate the applicability of the developed models to the satellite images with a high spatial resolution. For this, this study evaluated the applicability of the developed spatio-temporal fusion models for KOMPSAT-3A and Sentinel-2 images. Here, an Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Fusion Model (ESTARFM) and Spatial Time-series Geostatistical Deconvolution/Fusion Model (STGDFM), which use the different information for prediction, were applied. As a result of this study, it was found that the prediction performance of STGDFM, which combines temporally continuous reflectance values, was better than that of ESTARFM. Particularly, the prediction performance of STGDFM was significantly improved when it is difficult to simultaneously acquire KOMPSAT and Sentinel-2 images at a same date due to the low temporal resolution of KOMPSAT images. From the results of this study, it was confirmed that STGDFM, which has relatively better prediction performance by combining continuous temporal information, can compensate for the limitation to the low revisit time of fine-scale satellite images.

  • KOMPSAT-2, to be launched in 2005, will be a long awaited addition to the existing high-resolution satellite sensors. The use of download facilities in Europe will greatly increase its capacity without loosing any coverage over Korea. In this paper the concept for an Urban Application Center is presented. It is part of the proposed Regional Application Center which is dedicated to archiving and distributing KOMPSAT-2 images. The Urban Application Center will offer services derived from KOMPSAT-2. Its aim is to promote the use of KOMPSAT-2 data and increase the general awareness and acceptance of satellite data.
