  • This research deals with algorithm for forest fire severity classification using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-3A image to mapping forest fire areas. The recent satellite of the KOMPSAT series, KOMPSAT-3A, demonstrates high resolution and multi-spectral imagery with infrared and high resolution electro-optical bands. However, there is a lack of research to classify forest fire severity using KOMPSAT-3A. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze forest fire severity using KOMPSAT-3A images. In addition, this research used pre-fire and post-fire Sentinel-2 with differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) to taking for burn severity distribution map. To test the effectiveness of the proposed procedure on April 4, 2019, Gangneung wildfires were considered as a case study. This research used the probability density function for the classification of forest fire damage severity based on R software, a free software environment of statistical computing and graphics. The burn severities were estimated by changing NDVI before and after forest fire. Furthermore, standard deviation of probability density function was used to calculate the size of each class interval. A total of five distribution of forest fire severity were effectively classified.

  • On April 4, 2019, a forest fire started in Goseong County and lasted for three days, burning the neighboring areas of Sokcho. The strong winds moved the blaze from one region to another region and declared the worst wildfire in South Korea in years. More than 1,880 facilities, including 400 homes, were burnt down. The fire burned a total area of 529 hectares (1,307 acres), which involved 13,000 rescuers and 16,500 military troops to control the fire occurrence. Thousands of people were evacuated, and two people are dead. This study generated post-wildfire maps to provide necessary data for evacuation and mitigation planning to respond to this destructive wildfire, also prevent further damage and restore the area affected by the wildfire. This study used KOMPSAT-3A and Sentinel-2 imagery to map the post-wildfire condition. The SVM showed higher accuracy (overall accuracy 95.29%) compared with ANN (overall accuracy of 94.61%) for the KOMPSAT-3A. Moreover, for Sentinel-2, the SVM attained a higher accuracy (overall accuracy of 91.52%) than the ANN algorithm (overall accuracy 90.11%). In total, four post-wildfire burned area maps were generated; these results can be used to assess the area affected by the Sokcho wildfire and wildfire mitigation planning in the future.

  • The KOMPSAT-3A satellite acquires high-resolution MWIR images twice a day compared to conventional Earth observing satellites. New radiometric information of Earth's surface can be provided due to different characteristics from existing SWIR images or TIR images. In this study, the difference image of multitemporal images was generated and compared with existing infrared images to find the characteristics of KOMPSAT-3A MWIR satellite images. A co-registration was performed and the difference between pixel values was minimized by using PIFs (Pseudo Invariant Features) pixel-based relative normalization. The experiment using Sentinel-2 SWIR image, Landsat 8 TIR image, and KOMPSAT-3A MWIR image showed that the distinction between artifacts in the difference image of KOMPSAT-3A is prominent. It is believed that the utilization of KOMPSAT-3A MWIR images can be improved by using the characteristics of IR image.

  • This paper describes the design of a NUC(Non-uniformity Correction) module in MSC(Multispectral Camera) which will be a payload on KOMPSAT. This module is required inside a system with data compression module like MSC to minimize the loss of imagery due to non-uniform characteristics between CCD pixels when the imagery is received and processed on a ground station. It comprises Hotlink input/output for imagery data, RS-422 interface with main controller in MSC, a number of SRAMS for storing imagery data and parameters, FPGA controllers which control the entire NUC module under the control of main controller, etc. It inputs 8-channel imagery pixel data which consist of 2-channel MS(Multispectral) band and ...

  • This study refers to the derivation of simple crop yield prediction equation by using KOMPSAT-2 derived vegetation index. For a 1.25 ha small farm area located in the middle part of South Korea, the KOMPSAT-2 panchromatic and multi-spectral images of 31th August 2008, 17th November 2008, and 10th September 2009 were used. The field spectral reflectance during growing period for the 6 crops (rice, potato, corn, red pepper, garlic, and bean) were measured using ground spectroradiometer and the yield was investigated. Among the 6 vegetation indices (VI), the NDVI and ARVI between measured and image derived showed high relationship with the coefficient of determination of 0.85 and 0.95 respectively. Using the 3 years field data, the NDVI and ARVI regression curves were derived, and the yields were tried to compare with the maximum VIs value.

  • This study proposes the method to use existing digital maps as one of the technologies to exclude individual differences that occur in the process of manually determining GCP for the geometric correction of KOMPSAT images and applying it to the images and to automate the generation of ortho-images. It is known that, in case high-resolution satellite images are corrected geometrically by using RPC, first order polynomials are generally applied as the correction formula in order to obtain good results. In this study, we matched the corresponding objects between 1:25,000 digital map and a KOMPSAT image to obtain the coefficients of the zero order polynomial and showed the differences in the pixel locations obtained through the matching. We performed proximity corrections using the Boolean operation between the point data of the surface linear objects and the point data of the edge objects of the image. The surface linear objects are road, water, building from topographic map.

  • In this paper, we proposed a simplified strategy for the epipolarity of linear pushbroom imagery. The proposed strategy is verified on "Gupta and Hartly" sensor model and "Orun and Natarajan" sensor model. It is also compared with the precise epipolarity model of each sensor model on SPOT and KOMPSAT imagery. For the quantitative analysis, 20 ground control points are used as independent checking points. Based on the results, the accuracy of the proposed strategy is not different from that of the precise epipolarity model of each sensor model (below 0.1 pixels). Under the worst circumstance, the proposed strategy is robust. We can assure that the proposed strategy will show high accuracy on most of sensor models based on the co-linearity equations.

  • This study investigated the method for obtaining 3-dimensional terrain information on inaccessable areas by evaluating geometric accuracy of the EOC pass image and scene image acquired from the KOMPSAT-1 satellite. For this purpose, the following four experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the KOMPSAT-1 EOC satellite data. 1) Calculation of ground coordinates by using ancillary data and image coordinates on Level 1R that were processed by the pre-processing system of KOMPSAT-1. 2) Calculation of 3-dimensional ground coordinates from the ground coordinates of stereo images calculated by using ancillary data, based on space intersections. 3) Execution of bundle adjustment by using GCP (Ground Control Point) extracted in a part of the stereo pass image (KOMPSAT-1 EOC, 1 scene size); and then, evaluation of the ground coordinates from the calculated exterior orientation. 4) Evaluation of accuracy by applying the exterior orientation calculated from 3) To the whole pass image.

  • This paper explores the use of IKONOS imagery of 1 m resolution panchromatic (PAN) band and 4 m resolution multi-spectral (MS) band in the development of agriculturerelated data inventories. Three images (May 25, 2001, December 25, 2001, October 23, 2003) were used to obtain temporal distributions in crop cover characteristics such as rice, pear, grape, red pepper, corn, barley, garlic and surface water cover of reservoir with field investigations. The availability and cost problems are expected to solve by KOMPSAT-2 that is scheduled to launch in 2005. The capability of KOMPSAT-2 image for crop and rural water resources management will increase by accumulating temporal data inventories as a database.
