  • As the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-I (KOMPSAT-1) satellite can roll tilt up to $\pm$45$^{\circ}$, we have analyzed some KOMPSAT-1 EOC images taken at different tilt angles for this study. The required ground coordinates for bundle adjustment and geometric accuracy are obtained from the digital map produced by the National Geography Institution, at a scale of 1:5,000. Followings are the steps taken for the tilting angle of KOMPSAT-1 to be present in the evaluation of geometric accuracy of each different stereo image data: Firstly, as the tilting angle is different in each image, the characteristic of satellite dynamic must be determined by the sensor modeling. Then the best sensor modeling equation should be determined. The result of this research, the difference between the RMSE values of individual stereo images is mainly due to quality of image and ground coordinates instead of tilt angle. The bundle adjustment using three KOMPSAT-1 stereo pairs, first degree of polynomials for modeling the satellite position, were sufficient.

  • The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.

  • Despite the ecological importance of seagrass beds, their distributional information in Korean coastal waters is insufficient. Therefore, we used hydroacoustic system to collect accurate bathymetry and classification of seagrass, and Kompsat-2 (4 m spatial resolution) image for detection of seagrass beds at Deukryang Bay, Korea. The accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification was evaluated using hydracoustic survey result using error matrix and Kappa value. The total area of seagrass beds from satellite image classification was underestimated compared to the hydroacoustic survey, estimated 3.9 and $4.5km^2$ from satellite image and hydroacoustic data, respectively. Nonetheless, the accuracy of Kompsat-2 image classification over hydroacoustic-based method showing 90% (Kappa=0.85) for the three class maps (seagrass, unvegetated seawater and aquaculture). The agreement between the satellite image classification and the hydroacoustic result was 77.1% (the seagrass presence/absence map). From our result of satellite image classification, Kompsat-2 image is suitable for mapping seagrass beds with high accuracy and non-destructive method. For more accurate information, more researches with a variety of high-resolution satellite image will be preceded.

  • The KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite) has two optical imaging instruments called EOC(Electro-Optical Camera) and OSMI (Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager). The image data of these instruments are transmitted to ground station and restored correctly after post-processing with the telemetry data transfeered from KOMPSAT spacecraft. The major timing information of the KOMPSAT is OBT (On-Board Time) which is formatted by the on-board computer of the spacecraft, based on 1Hz sync. pulse coming from the GPS receiver involved. The OBT is transmitted to ground station with the house-keeping telemetry data of the spacecraft while it is distributed to the instruments via 1553B data bus for synchronization during imaging and formatting. The timing information contained in the spacecraft telemetry data would have direct relation to the image data of the instruments, which should be well explained to get a more accurate image. This paper addresses the timing analysis of the KOMPSAT spacecraft and instruments, including the gyro data timing analysis for the correct restoration of the EOC and OSMI image data at ground station.

  • The optical sensors of Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) and Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) aboard the Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) will be placed in a sun synchronous orbit in 1999. The EOC and OSMI sensors are expected to produce the land mapping imagery of Korean territory and the ocean color imagery of world oceans, respectively. Utilization of the EOC and OSMI data would encompass the various fields of science and technology such as land mapping, land use and development, flood monitoring, biological oceanography, fishery, and environmental monitoring. Readiness of data support for user community is thus essential to the success of the KOMPSAT program. As part of testing such readiness prior to the KOMPSAT launch, we have performed the preliminary acceptance test for the KOMPSAT data processing system using the simulated EOC and OSMI data sets. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the readiness of the KOMPSAT data processing system, and to help data users understand how the KOMPSAT EOC and OSMI data are processed and archived. Test results demonstrate that all requirements described in the data processing specification have been met, and that the image integrity is maintained for all products. It is however noted that since the product accuracy is limited by the simulated sensor data, any quantitative assessment of image products can not be made until actual KOMPSAT images will be acquired.
