Critical Success Factors for Malaysian SMEs and Large Companies in Commercializing Universities' R&D Outputs

  • Commercializing universities' R&D outputs is a major management challenge and there are limited studies to describe this phenomenon from the perspective of companies' management. Experiences of six small and medium size and four large companies' management's respondents are gathered through semi-structured face-toface interviews. Twelve critical success factors revealed by the respondents, namely R&D product and market readiness, good partnership with university, researcher's motivationand commitment, availability of resources, government support and motivation, control and ownership of intellectual property rights, university's management support, entrepreneurial culture in the university, an open communication and trusting relationship, researchers' skills, a risk taking attitude, and existence of performance measures as important to commercialize the universities' R&D outputs in Malaysia. The different views from the management of small and medium size, and large companies are also discussed in this study.

  • A group G is called cyclic subgroup separable for the cyclic subgroup H if for each $x\;{\in}\;G{\backslash}H$, there exists a normal subgroup N of finite index in G such that $x\;{\not\in}\;HN$. Clearly a cyclic subgroup separable group is residually finite. In this note we show that certain polygonal products of cyclic subgroup separable groups amalgamating normal subgroups are again cyclic subgroup separable. We then apply our results to polygonal products of polycyclic-by-finite groups and free-by-finite groups.

ON THE MINIMUM ORDER OF 4-LAZY COPS-WIN GRAPHS

  • We consider the minimum order of a graph G with a given lazy cop number $c_L(G)$. Sullivan, Townsend and Werzanski [7] showed that the minimum order of a connected graph with lazy cop number 3 is 9 and $k_3{\square}k_3$ is the unique graph on nine vertices which requires three lazy cops. They conjectured that for a graph G on n vertices with ${\Delta}(G){\geq}n-k^2$, $c_L(G){\leq}k$. We proved that the conjecture is true for k = 4. Furthermore, we showed that the Petersen graph is the unique connected graph G on 10 vertices with ${\Delta}(G){\leq}3$ having lazy cop number 3 and the minimum order of a connected graph with lazy cop number 4 is 16.

  • 본 논문에서는 인터넷전화 품질평가를 위한 국내 동향에 대하여 기술하고, BcN영상전화 서비스에 대한 SLA 품질지표 및 품질기준을 국내외 동향 및 기준표준화에 근거하여 마련하고 이를 검증하기 위한 품질측정 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 통해서 영상전화 서비스의 SLA 품질기준이 조기에 마련되어 국내 통신사업자들의 이용약관에 반영되기를 기대한다. 따라서 본 논문의 목차는 서론, SLA 개요, 영상전화 서비스의 품질지표 및 기준, 품질지표별 측정방법 및 시험측정 결과에 대하여 기술하였다.

Facile preparation of superhydrophobic thin films using non-aligned carbon nanotubes

  • A simple preparation method on creating superhydrophobic surface using non-aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was demonstrated. Superhydrophobic CNT thin films were prepared by doping a sonicated mixture of CNTs and chloroform onto a glass slide. Water contact angles of the CNT thin films were measured using a contact angle goniometer. The thin films were characterized using laser microscope and scanning electron microscope. Experimental results revealed that the highest average contact angle of $162{\pm}2^{\circ}$ was achieved when the films' thickness was $1.628{\mu}m$. The superhydrophobic surface was stable as the contact angle only receded from $162{\pm}2$ to $157{\pm}2^{\circ}$ after 10 min under normal atmospheric condition.

  • Let [n] = {1, 2, …, n} and 2[n] be the set of all subsets of [n]. For a family 𝓕 ⊆ 2[n], its diversity, denoted by div(𝓕), is defined to be $$div(\mathcal{F})=\min_{x{\in}[n]}\{{\mid}{\mathcal{F}}(\bar{x}){\mid}\}$$, where ${\mathcal{F}}(\bar{x})=\{F{\in}{\mathcal{F}}:x{\not\in}F\}$. Basically, div(𝓕) measures how far 𝓕 is from a trivial intersecting family, which is called a star. In this paper, we consider a generalization of diversity for t-intersecting family.

Deploying a Wireless Sensor Network for Oceanography using ZigBee

  • We recently developed new offshore observation system using USN buoy, widely used to measure the directional properties of ocean wave, seawater temperature, UV light, longitude and latitude of the buoy using GPS module. This paper also documents the development and implementation of a buoy network for acquisition of data of base station with buoys. The major phases of the project include specification of the network, physical construction of network nodes, software development for control of nodes, and testing of network performance. We described some of the practical issues involved in designing, building and deploying a buoy network for oceanographic monitoring. The paper explains some of the design decisions and their consequences, and some of the lessons learned from a first lesson network trial at sea.

  • Moored ocean buoys are technically feasible approach for making sustained time series observation in the oceans and will be an important component of any long-term ocean observing system. The 3M disc buoy carried Zeno 3200, MCCB, Orbcomm, Global Star and Bluetooth module. The deployments have relied on Orbcomm and Global Star as the primary satellite communications system. In addition to detailing our practical experience in the use of Orbcomm and Global Star as high latitudes, we will present some of scientific sensor results regarding real-time oceanographic and meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wave height and etc. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a small-scale buoy sensor network. One of the major challenges is that the network is hard to access after its deployment and hence both hardware and software must be robust and reliable.

Robot Localization with Ultrasonic Position System

  • The robot localization problem is a key problem in making truly autonomous robots. In this work we provide thorough discussions of Ultrasonic Positioning System can be applied to the localization problem. First, we look at the use of Kalman filters and basic concept and the equation involved in Kalman filters. Secondly, we create understanding of how the Kalman filters can be implemented in robot localization. We show our discussion and experiments how Kalman filters applied to the localization problem. Lastly, we perform simulations using Usat Wheel Chair robot in our own general Kalman filters robot monitoring software.

Performance Analysis of Free-Style Writing and Drawing using Ultrasonic Position System

  • In future domestic context aware applications the location of mobile devices is often required. Ultrasonic technology enables high resolution indoor position measurements. A disadvantage of state-of-art ultrasonic systems is that several base stations are required to estimate 3D position. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of using UPS as a 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool. The processes include the design and testing of UPS as an efficient 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool in the air. The paper will further explain the system architecture of the UPS and how to use GPS as 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool. The efficiency and effectiveness of the system was confirmed by a computer software simulation. The software will further display the result of drawing or writing from the user by graphics. As a result, it is possible to implement UPS as a 3D free-hand writing or drawing tool in the air.
