  • The authority and reputation of a medical journal is based on the number of received citations. Korean Medical Citation Index [KoMCI] provides information about citations of Korean medical journals since 2002. All six issues of KoMCI [from 2000 to 2005] were used for analysis. Citations, impact factor, and their changes were evaluated. We compared the data of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society[JKNS] with other Korean medical journals. The impact factor[IF] of 2005 maintained increased value since 2004, although the impact factor excluding self citation[ZIF] returned previous low value. Improvement in proportion of Korean citations and in proportions of non-self received citations were encouraging changes. Although there were some improvements, the status of JKNS with respect to ZIF is still behind other Korean medical journals selected for comparison. Improvement of the status of JKNS by aid of KoMCI and enhanced reputation of KoMCI by its positive influence on JKNS or other Korean medical journals will be beneficial to members and medical societies of Korea.

  • The marine sponges Hyrtios and Haliclona species, both of which are known to produce secondary bioactive metabolites, were used to extract 1304KO-327 and 1304KO-328. Such secondary metabolites are potentially antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antifungal, and antiplasmodial. In the present study, the effects of 1304KO-327 and 1304KO-328 were studied for their clinical and pathological importance. The cytotoxicity of 1304KO-327 and 1304KO-328 was assessed via MTT(3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay on HT-29, Caco-2, and Raw 264.7 cells. Rotavirus-infected Caco-2 cells were used to prove the antiviral effects of the marine sponge extracts. The test results cogently proved that the virus-inhibiting effects of the sponge extracts improved with extract concentration. Anti-inflammatory effects of the marine sponge extracts were tested on Lipopolysaccharide-treated Raw 264.7 cells. Nitric oxide and cytokine were produced by treatment of the cells with LPS and the inhibiting effects of the sponge extracts on $IL-1{\beta}$ formation were investigated. This study found that the NO production was decreased dose dependently, and $IL-1{\beta}$ formation was significantly reduced by the marine sponge extracts.

  • Neurotransmitter release is regulated by various proteins of the active zone in the presynaptic nerve terminals. Dopamine (DA) is an essential neurotransmitter associated with the pathophysiology of diverse behavioral and mental illness such as schizophrenia and drug addiction. We measured synaptosomal DA release of knockout (KO) mice which lacked major genes related to neurotransmitter release. Synaptosomal DA uptake and release were performed and measured using [$^3H$]-DA and superfusion experiments. 3 of the 17 KO mice exhibited altered DA release compared to their littermate controls. In $Rim1{\alpha}$ KO, [$^3H$]-DA release evoked by membrane depolarization significantly decreased. Both basal (physiological buffer-evoked) and membrane depolarization-evoked DA release significantly decreased in dopaminergic conditional KO of $Rim1{\alpha}{\beta}$. Dopaminergic conditional KO of neurexin3 demonstrated a significant increase of membrane depolarization-evoked DA release. These data explain the similarities and distinctions between DA and other classical neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA ($\gamma$-aminobutyric acid) release. In conclusion, $Rim1{\alpha}$ and neurexin3 may be important regulators of presynaptic DA release and related to disorders of the nervous system.

  • A new eddy covariance-based flux tower has been established since June 2016 in a dry direct-seeding rice paddy field in southwestern Korea - Haenam Paddy field KoFlux site (HPK). To assess the competitiveness of direct-seeding agricultural technique in the context of climate-smart agriculture, we have been monitoring the $CO_2$, $CH_4$ and energy fluxes continuously. In this communication, we (1) introduce the HPK site and (2) explain the structure and processes of the HPK-specific data processing and quality control. The latter consists of 10-steps data processing and quality control procedures following the KoFlux standardized protocol and explained each step in layman's term. The final data produced during the data processing were stored in NCAM-DAPS (National Center for AgroMeteorology-Data Acquisition and Processing System, http://daps.ncam.kr). We hope that the introduction of new HPK KoFlux site would serve as a platform to facilitate transdisciplinary efforts in the research and education associated with climate-smart agriculture toward sustainability.
