  • This study was conducted for the purpose of suggesting ways to improve KMLA's support programs to strengthen the capabilities of domestic medical librarians. To this end, after investigating the roles of professional associations, common roles were extracted and categorized into five areas, and then the support programs of MLA and KMLA were compared and analyzed. As a result, six suggestions can be made as ways to improve KMLA's support program. First, policy development is needed to officially and continuously support medical librarians. Second, in the area of (continued) education and training programs, educational support in professional areas required in the medical field is needed, as well as education for the role of the IRB committee. Third, in terms of research and publication support, various support for research funds and training programs is required. Fourth, in terms of network and cooperation support, mentoring, leadership, and fellowship programs are needed, and improvements to domestic and international partnerships and support for various awards should also be planned. Fifth, in terms of professional certification and various certificate systems, it is necessary to provide support for obtaining degrees in related fields and to issue certificates through support for various courses. Sixth, KMLA's active internal and external promotion and activities should be carried out to attract donations.

  • We present a study of citizen science performed at Korean Minjok Leadership Academy (KMLA). The importance of citizen involvements in scientific studies has been increasing, with remarkable results and performances. For instance, the discovery of an impact scar near Jupiter's south polar region (A. Wesley, 2009) led to an international campaign of professional observations to understand the asteroidal collision responsible for the scar. Citizen science at KMLA has been and will be mainly conducted by members of the astronomical observation club 'Apple-Pie' through amateur telescopes. Members of 'Apple-Pie' are specialized in various fields related to astronomy, from planetary science to cosmology. The spectrum not only includes fields that are directly related to astronomy but also fields such as computer science and astrophotography. The scheduled construction of a new observatory will further enable students to participate in higher level projects such as planetary monitoring over long timescales and the observation and detection of solar system bodies and exoplanets. In addition, a new supervisor with expertise and research experience in galactic astronomy, planetary science, and meteorology has joined the school faculty. He will supplement students with fundamental theoretical backgrounds and essential research techniques to enhance astronomical research at KMLA. KMLA's ultimate goal is to deploy a remote-controlled observatory available to aspiring scientists around the world to create a network of citizen science system. The prime observational conditions of KMLA and the willingness of the students and faculty members will provide a competitive edge for KMLA over other similar institutes in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest ways to improve medical librarians' educational programs to improve domestic medical library user services. To this end, the role of medical librarians was investigated, and the education areas were itemized, and then the MLA in the US and the KMLA in Korea were compared and analyzed. As a result, the improvement points for medical librarian education programs in Korea are: First, expansion of certification programs that select various types of education programs, education areas, education contents, and specialized fields, collaboration programs with related institutions, and education programs that advocate the value of KMLA are required. Second, there is a need for various educational programs in the current educational areas, such as 'research support service' and 'education/education design/consultation'. In particular, it is necessary to provide 'consumer health information service' and 'disaster information service' for which there is no education at all. In addition, it is necessary to precede the establishment of regulations on the domestic medical librarian education curriculum for the education of various 'information services in the field related to medicine'. Third, it is necessary to provide online education contents for librarians who have difficulty participating in face-to-face education.

  • In this paper, we present a real-time physical simulation model of water surfaces with a novel method to represent the water mass flow in full three dimensions. In a physical simulation model, the state of the water surfaces is represented by a set of physical values, including height, velocity, and the gradient. The evolution of the velocity field in previous works is handled by a velocity solver based on the Navier-Stokes equations, which occurs as a result of the unevenness of the velocity propagation. In this paper, we integrate the principle of the mass conservation in a fluid of equilateral density to upgrade the height field from the unevenness, which in mathematical terms can be represented by the divergence operator. Thus the model generates waves induced by horizontal velocity, offering a simulation that puts forces added in all direction into account when calculating the values for height and velocity for the next frame. Other effects such as reflection off the boundaries, and interactions with floating objects are involved in our method. The implementation of our method demonstrates to run with fast speed scalable to real-time rates even for large simulation domains. Therefore, our model is appropriate for a real-time and large scale water surface simulation into which the animator wishes to visualize the global fluid flow as a main emphasis.

  • This study examines the status of websites operation among libraries affiliated to the Korean Medical Library Association, compares and analyzes website menu organization and information service contents of 29 medical libraries that currently run websites. The followings are results of this study. 1) the main menu of medical library websites is arranged with 'Search for Library Materials, Electronic Resources, Library Service, My Library, Library Guide, and the Bulletin Board.' 2) 15 services were selected as the main information service provided from the medical library website. 3) the information service that was provided from the most institutions was 'Document Copy/ Interlibrary Loan,' followed by 'Loan Reservation/Renewal, Request Library Purchase Book, Off-campus Access, User Education, Reference Resources, Q&A Board, Our Library Pubmed, and Dissertation Submission' in this order.
