  • The variation characteristics of groundwater level with distance from shoreline at Jeju Island was investigated using groundwater level data monitored from 257 wells for dry season (December 1998) and wet season (July 1997), respectively. Groundwater levels of the dry season were $7.46{\sim}203.8\;m$ with an average of 60.49 m, while those of the wet season were $4.01{\sim}204.10\;m$ with an average of 57.66 m. Groundwater level of the dry season was higher than that of the wet season, which was caused by heavy rains between June and October, 1998 at the Jeju Island. Correlation coefficients between altitude and groundwater level for dry and wet seasons were above 0.86, and those between dry season and wet season groundwater levels were very high above 0.95. 257 groundwater level data were classified at an interval of 500 m. Average values for altitude, groundwater levels and distance from shoreline were calculated for 17 intervals. Altitude and groundwater level fur dry and wet seasons at $0{\sim}4\;km$ intervals were increased with distance from shoreline, but those at $4{\sim}9\;km$ intervals were irregularity. Linear functions of the groundwater level for dry and wet seasons as distance from shoreline were estimated, and the coefficient of determinant at $0{\sim}4\;km$ interval data was higher than it at $0{\sim}9\;km$ interval data. Increasing rate of groundwater level at $0{\sim}4\;km$ intervals was more 2 times than it at $0{\sim}9\;km$ intervals. This results are caused by linear increase of groundwater level to 4 km from shoreline and by irregularity of groundwater level at the $4{\sim}9\;km$ intervals.

  • Seagrass meadows are important biogenic habitats for a wide variety of marine animals and plants, a source of organic carbon for commercially important animals, and act as a nutrient filter in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. As such, mapping the distribution of seagrass beds provides us with an important component of management and conservation strategies. To survey seagrass distribution within Deukryang Bay, we directly observed seagrass beds using SCUBA in Boseong-gun, Goheung-gun, and Jangheung-gun. Seagrass distribution in Geogeum and Gumdang islands were not observed. Specifically, we monitored the distribution area, species composition, morphology, density, and biomass of seagrass meadows. Seagarss beds were mapped for Daikum-ri coast, Deukryang island, Yongjeong-ri coast, Samsan-ri coast and Ongam-ri coast. Total seagrass coverage in Deukryang Bay was $5.1\;km^2$, $4.8\;km^2$ of which was Zostera marina, $0.3\;km^2$ Z. caulescence and $0.01\;km^2$ Z. japonica. Z. japonica was found in intertidal zones, Z. marina was found from the intertidal to subtidal zones of 2 m MSL (mean sea level) depth, and Z. caulescence was found in subtidal zones of 2.5-5 m MSL.

  • Acer tegmentosum Maxim (ATM) has been used to treat hepatic disorders in traditional oriental medicine. However, there is little information about phytochemical constituents for quality control of ATM. In this study, we developed and established a simultaneous analytical method of the 10 marker compounds (three coumarins, 3 flavonoids, 1 lignan, 3 phenolics) in ATM using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Chromatographic separation of ten target analytes was achieved with a Waters Acquity UPLC BEH $C_{18}$ analytical column ($2.1{\times}100mm$, $1.7{\mu}m$), using a mobile phase of 0.1% (v/v) formic acid in water and acetonitrile with gradient elution. Identifications and quantitation of all analytes were performed using a Q-Exactive UPLC-MS/MS system. Correlation coefficients of the calibration curve for all analytes were ${\geq}0.9986$. The values of limits of detection and quantification of all analytes were 0.5-10.0 and 5.0-50.0 ng/mL, respectively. The established UPLC-MS/MS method successfully identified all target analytes in ATM, and the phytochemicals were 0.01-67.98 mg/g in its lyophilized water extract.

  • Objectives: This study examined the effects of 8 types of herbal prescriptions prescribed to alleviate dementia symptoms in a rat model of arterial thrombosis induced by ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$). Methods: Thirty minutes before 35% $FeCl_3$ treatment, SD rats were intraperitoneally injected with the 8 types of herbal prescriptions, respectively. We tested the effects of the herbal prescriptions on time to occlusion (TTO) in an arterial thrombosis model using a laser Doppler flow meter. In addition, thrombus weight (TW) and collagen fiber damages were evaluated in the same condition. Results: Herbal prescriptions showed the following rank-order based on their TTO: Chong-myung-tang (CMT) > modified Jangwonhan 02 (LMK02) > Toki-shakuyaku-san (TSS) ${\geq}$ Oren-gedoku-to (OGT) ${\geq}$ Yokukansan (YKS). In particular, CMT (100 mg/kg, i.p.) and LMK02 (100 mg/kg, i.p.) delayed the TTO the most ($14.83{\pm}0.98$ and $13.67{\pm}1.03$ min, respectively) compared with the vehicle group ($7.95{\pm}0.78$ min, P<0.001). In addition, CMT, LMK02, and OGT treatment ($0.63{\pm}0.01$, $0.66{\pm}0.02$ and $0.67{\pm}0.01$ mg/mm, respectively) significantly reduced thrombus weight compared with the vehicle treatment ($0.78{\pm}0.03$, P<0.001) and also alleviated collagen fiber damage (CMT; $28.40{\pm}2.22$%, LMK02; $30.79 {\pm} 4.07$%, OGT; $26.20{\pm}1.48$%) in the vessels injured by $FeCl_3$. Therefore, CMT and LMK02 showed the greatest preventive activity in rat model of arterial thrombosis induced by $FeCl_3$. Conclusions: These results provide experimental evidence for traditional use of herbal prescriptions, suggesting that CMT and LMK02 extracts could be used to prevent vascular injury and thrombosis in the early stages of dementia.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of depending on variations of speed in backward walking on lower extremities muscle. For this study, 30 members were randomly divided into three groups; groupI(n=10, forward walking: 5km/h), groupII(n=10, backward walking: 5km/h), groupIII(n=10, backward walking: 2.5km/h). This exercise was performed to 30 minutes 4 times a week for 4 weeks. This study was measured before the exercise and after 4 weeks. The result of this study are as follows. The muscle activity of rectus femoRIS was higher in backward walking group(p<.01) than in forward walking group and it was the highest at groupII(p<.001). The quadriceps muscle strength of thigh was higher in backward walking group(p<.01) than in forward walking group and it was the highest at groupII(p<.001). From these results, backward walking training was effective on muscle activity, strength of thigh muscle. Although fast speed backward walking was most effective, low speed backward walking that compare with forward walking was effective.

  • This study examines the effects of removal of the sediment protection weir at Taehwa river mouth on hydraulic and around river environment considering the fact that the effects of the sediment protection weir which is installed to protect water level drop of Ulsan harbor caused by sediments according to flood in Taehwa river, Dong-chun, and so forth may add water quality contamination by flow stagnance in normal and drought period and accumulation of pollutants. The result is as follows. First, it is estimated from the examination of variation characteristics water depth and level for Taehwa river before and after removal of the sediment protection weir that about 0.01m of water depth down according to removal of the sediment protection weir occurs when low flow runs between the sediment protection weir which is located about 2.3km away from the estuary and Samho-gyo which is about 9.0km away from the sediment protection weir, and about 0.01~0.56m(directly upstream point of the sediment protection weir 0.56m, Myongchon-gyo 0.14m, Ulsan-gyo 0.03m, and Taehwa-gyo 0.02m) downs when design flood flows between the sediment protection weir and the upstream of Taehwa-gyo which is 10km away from the sediment protection weir. Therefore, it is thought that variation of hydraulic characteristics of water depth down and so on according to removal of the sediment protection weir is slight because water depth variation is only about 1cm between directly upstream point of the sediment protection weir and Samho-gyo. Next, it is estimated from the examination of variation characteristics of flow velocity for Taehwa river before and after removal of the sediment protection weir that about 0.0lm/s of flow velocity increase occurs between the directly upstream point of the sediment protection weir which is about 2.4km away from the estuary and the directly upstream point of Samho-gyo when low flow runs, and about 0.01~0.44m/s increases between the sediment protection weir and Samho-gyo when design flood flows. Therefore, riverbed erosion by the increased flow velocity is concerned but it is thought that the concern about riverbed erosion is not great because the mean velocity is about 0.07~1.36m/s when low flow runs, and about 1.02~2.41m/s when design flood flows for the sector which experiences the flow velocity variation.

  • Determination of an ionospheric delay scale factor, which converts ground-based ionospheric delay into low Earth orbit ionospheric delay, using the international reference ionosphere model is proposed. Ionospheric delay from international GNSS service model combined with IRI-derived scale factor is evaluated with NASA GRACE satellite data. At approximately 480km altitude, mean and standard deviation of the scale factor are 0.25 and 0.01 in 2004. The scale factor reaches high in night time and Spring and Fall seasons. Ionospheric delay error by the proposed method has a mean of 3.50 TECU in 2004.

  • Mammals act as an important role in maintaining ecosystem, but direct observation is very difficult. Nevertheless, in order to understand the impact of various changes about a sudden environment, long-term monitoring through direct investigation is essential. This study investigated home range analysis using GPS tracking device and behavioral ecology of Korean waterdeer (Hydropotes inermis), indigenous and native species in Korea. Studies on ecological characteristics and home range of Korean waterdeer are insufficient. Therefore, we studied home range using the GPS technique for critical point of existing research. Data showed the active movement in daytime ($44.1km^2$) than night ($30.0km^2$) and large area of activity in winter ($3.7km^2$) and spring ($44.1km^2$) than summer($0.04km^2$) and autumn ($0.01km^2$). The most used area of Korean waterdeer was forested area and wetland, agricultural area, waters in order of frequency based on the land coverage map. Our research represents overall characteristics of Korean water deer due to measurement of area of activity. However, this research signified behavioral ecology for Korean waterdeer, and further investigation in necessary.

  • $K_2CO_3$-based dry regenerable sorbents were prepared by spray-drying techniques to improve mass produced $K_2CO_3-Al_2O_3$ sorbents (KEP-CO2P, hereafter), and then tested for their $CO_2$ sorption capacity by a $2,000Nm^3/h$ (0.5 MWe) $CO_2$ capture pilot plant built for Unit 3 of the Hadong thermal power station in 2010. Each of the sample sorbents contained 35 wt.% $K_2CO_3$ as the active materials with various support materials such as $TiO_2$, MgO, Zeolite 13X, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$ and hydrotalcite (HTC). Their physical properties and reactivity were tested to evaluate their applicability to a fluidized-bed or fast transport-bed $CO_2$ capture process. The $CO_2$ sorption capacity and percentage utilization of $K_2CO_3$-MgO based sorbent, Sorb-KM2, was $8.6g-CO_2/100g$-sorbents and 90%, respectively, along with good mechanical strength for fluidized-bed application. Sorbs-KM2 and KT were almost completely regenerated at $140^{\circ}C$. No degradation of Sorb-KM by $SO_2$ added as a pollutant in flue gas was observed during a cycle test.
