Objectives : The concurrent use of Korean Medicine (KM) and Western Medicine (WM) for the management of disease are increasing. In this study, the factors determining the choice of concurrent use of KM and WM was investigated based on national survey data for the public. Methods : Survey data from 1239 people with experience treating diseases with KM were utilized for this study. The national survey data were gathered using e-mail and face-to-face interviews between December 2007 and January 2008. Results : Among people who had been treated with KM, 819 (66%) used both KM and WM to the treat same disease. Multivariable analysis revealed that concurrent users of KM and WM were significantly associated with age 40-69 (OR=1.43, 95% CI=1.12-1.82), university education or higher (OR=1.34; 95% CI=1.05-1.71), enhanced health status (OR = 0.47, 95% CI=0.35-0.62) and unsatisfied with WM (OR = 1.71, 95% CI=1.02-2.87). The respondents that reported KM was more effective than WM among concurrent users of KM and WM were significantly associated with being an office worker (OR=1.78, 95% CI=1.25-2.53), age 40-69 (OR = 0.62, 95% CI=0.44-0.86), unsatisfied with WM (OR=2.61, 95% CI=1.51-4.50) and overall satisfied with KM (OR=8.38, 95% CI=5.65-12.44) Conclusions : This study showed that two-thirds of KM user were concurrent user of KM and WM, and some influential factors determined the choice of a concurrent use of KM and WM. Therefore, Korean Medicine Doctors should consider the possibility of concurrent use, need to know the information on the benefits and risks of concurrent use.
Objectives : This study aimed to obtain general information for the design of a medical tourism plan toward Chinese using Korean medicine (KM). Methods : A questionnaire was asked of Chinese tourists regarding of Korea traditional medical tourism. 148 valid responses were obtained and their awareness of KM, and preferred subject and decision factors for their participation in Korea traditional medical tourism were analyzed using SPSS version 12.0. Results : 72% of respondents showed over a moderate degree of interest in medical tourism of KM. The most preferred subject was skin aesthetics, followed by medical check-ups and rehabilitation. Medical skill level, communication, and medical cost were indicated as the important factors for participants' decisions about KM-based medical tourism. Conclusions : Medical tourism could be a potential avenue for development by the KM-based Korean medical industry. Cosmetic-associated medical services are recommended, and enhanced public relations about KM-medical skill levels are strongly suggested for Chinese tourists.

The Knowledge Management (KM) technologies has been implemented to improve customer relationship and to develop new products and services in many organization. However, current review of articles and journals about implementations of KM reveals that effectiveness on the KM implementation is depended on an organizational culture that supports knowledge sharing. The purpose of this research is to explore the possible relationship between specific organizational culture attributes of the successfully KM technology implemented organization to improve customer relationship and to develop new products and services. The OCP and the KMTP instruments were used to identify and rank the most critical organizational culture attributes of promoting successful KM technology implementation to improve customer relationship and developing new products and services. Data were collected from twenty six US organizations involved in a KM implementation effort.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the effectiveness of speed limit change that is defined as the amount of increased travel speed. METHODS : A ordered logit model was adopted to analyze the relationship between the change in travel speed and contributing factors. A stretch of Kyungbu freeway was selected for the analysis because the Korea expressway corporation has raised speed limit from 100km/h to 110km/h since September 1st in 2010. RESULTS : The results showed that geometric design elements, speeding cameras, and section length were identified as factors contributing the effectiveness. Contributing geometric design elements include the number of horizontal curves and vertical curves that do not meet the design requirement with 110km/h speed limit. CONCLUSIONS : The outcome of this study will be used for establishing various traffic operations and control strategies for freeway speed management.
In order to explore a relationship among KM context, KM effects, and sustainability of competitive advantage of organizations, a contingency model of KM, which is based on resource-based as well as knowledge-based theory, is developed from the information systems and strategic management literature. To put it concretely, our motivation for this paper was to answer the following questions: (1) What factors affect the degree to which an organization achieves KM effects? (2) Is there a positive relationship between KM effects and organizational performance achieved by linking KM to competitive advantage? A detailed exploratory analysis of survey responses from 79 Korean companies provides the following significant findings: (1) This study found support for the proposed research model. (2) The organization's degree of process and organizational outcomes of KM effects is determined by technical and social resources and its capabilities. Furthermore, the influence of technical and social resources of KM context on process and organizational outcomes of KM effects is controlled by different types of organizational perspectives on KM. (3) There is a relationship between process and organizational outcomes of KM effects and organizational performance enhanced by linking KM to competitive advantage.
Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the change in Sasang constitution prediction value in 2 years and find the factors associated with it. Methods Cohort data from Korean medicine data center was used. Using Korean Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire (KS-15) which consist of questions related to body shape, temperament, and symptoms, participants were categorized into Tae-Yang (TY), Tae-Eum (TE), So-Yang (SY), and So-Eum (SE). Sasang constitution was assessed on the baseline and after two years. Result Total 5,784 participants were analyzed. (TE 3, 341; SE 911; SY 1,532). Among them, 1,402 participants (24.2%) showed different prediction value in KS-15 after two years. The proportion of participants showing different prediction value in two years was the highest in SY, and the lowest in TE group. The factors associated with the change in Sasang constitution prediction value were different by constitution type. The change in feeling after sweating was significantly associated with the change in prediction value in TE and SY groups, not in SE group. Although temperament was not significantly associated with the change in prediction value from TE to SE, it was significantly associated with that in the change from TE to SY. The change in BMI and appetite were associated with the change in constitution prediction value in all three constitution types. Conclusion Although the factors associated with the change in prediction value of Sasang constitution were different by each constitution type, BMI and appetite were significant in all three types. These factors could be useful for developing Sasang constitution questionnaire and deciding re-prediction needs of Sasang constitution. Further research about the factors related to Sasang constitution diagnosis need to be conducted.
Objectives: We used the 2019 Korea Health Panel Annual Data to analyze factors related to visits to Korean medicine (KM) outpatient clinics among patients with mood disorders in Korea. Methods: Individuals aged 19 years or older, with depressive or bipolar disorders, and with a record of using Western medicine (WM) and/or the KM medical service were included. The 266 subjects were classified into the WM group or the integrative medicine (IM) group. The Andersen healthcare utilization model was used to analyze factors that potentially influenced the subjects' healthcare utilization. Binomial logistic regression analysis was used to analyze factors influencing the use of IM medical services. Results: Among the subjects, 75.56% (n=201) were in the WM group, and 24.44% (n=65) were in the IM group. Statistically significant differences were observed in residential areas, total annual income, the presence of disability, and the level of pain/discomfort between the two groups. Regression analysis found that residential areas and pain/discomfort were factors related to the use of IM services. Specifically, reporting "a lot" of pain/discomfort compared to "no" pain/discomfort showed a significant positive relationship with the use of IM (odds ratio=4.57, 95% confidence interval=1.79 to 11.70). Conclusions: This study was the first to analyze the status of KM medical service use and related factors among patients with mood disorders in Korea. The finding that the presence of pain/discomfort was positively correlated with the use of KM services is potentially related to medically unexplained physical symptoms or somatization phenomena.
Background: We developed a habitat suitability index (HSI) model for Pedicularis hallaisanensis, a Grade II Endangered Species in South Korea. To determine the habitat variables, we conducted a literature review on P. hallaisanensis with a specific focus on the associated spatial factors, climate, topography, threats, and soil factors to derive five environmental factors that influence P. hallaisanensis habitats. The specific variables were defined based on the collected data and consultations with experts in the field, with the validity of each variable tested through field studies. Results: Mt. Seorak had a suitable habitat area of 2.48 km2 for sites with a score of 1 (0.62% of total area) and 0.01 km2 for sites with a score of 0.9. Mt. Bangtae had a suitable habitat area of 0.03 km2 for sites with a score of 1 (0.02% of total area) and 0 km2 for sites with a score of 0.9. Mt. Gaya showed 0.13 km2 of suitable habitat for sites with a score of 1 (0.17% of total area) and 0 km2 for sites with a score of 0.9. Lastly, Mt. Halla showed 3.12 km2 of suitable habitat related to sites with a score of 1 (2.04% of total area) and 4.08 km2 of sites with a score of 0.9 (2.66% of total area). Mt. Halla accounts for 73.1% of the total core habitat area. Considering the climatic, soil, and forest conditions together with standardized collection sites, our results indicate that Mt. Halla should be viewed as a core habitat of P. hallaisanensis. Conclusions: The findings in this study provide useful data for the identification of core habitat areas and potential alternative habitats to prevent the extinction of the endangered species, P. hallaisanensis. Furthermore, the developed HSI model allows for the prediction of suitable habitats based on the ecological niche of a given species to identify its unique distribution and causal factors.
