Current research and development efforts and other projects for energy storage systems (ESS) have recently been gaining attention. This is due to the many applications where ESS, particularly batteries, can be used. Among these are peak shaving, frequency regulation, and stabilization of renewable energy output. KEPCO has completed the construction and demonstration of a 4-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Jeju City to verify its practicability in the power grid. KEPCO Research Institute has also been developing technology for the commercialization of BESS, and has been conducting a trial run of a 52-MW ESS (28MW + 24MW of Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations) constructed in 2014 for frequency regulation. This paper discusses the development of operation methods, as well as an operation user interface, for the safe operation and monitoring of BESS used for frequency regulation in a power system. Included are operation and simulation methods for various normal and transient frequency situations that can be experienced by a power system. Also discussed are the results obtained after applying these methods to the 4-MW BESS and the 52-MW ESS, both used for frequency regulation. The technology in this paper will be applied to 500MW ESS for frequency regulation of KEPCO by 2017. It is expected that this technology helps a safe and reliable operation and control of ESS for frequency regulation through its continuous upgrade.
Since $20^{th}$ century, along with the rapid industrial advancement, the concentrated urban development in specific large cities have made people migrate to those cities, thus causing problems in the power system stability. In case of Korea, more than 40% of the power system demand comes from the consumers in Seoul Metropolitan area and the rate is expected to increase. With the continuous increase of power demand, in order to meet the demand for system reliability improvement, the power system was multi-looped for reliability enhancement, the problem of fault current happened. In this situation, there are several methods for fault current reduction likes current limiting reactor, replacing circuit breaker, splitting busses, etc. But these methods reached its limit, power system needs more fundamental solutions such as grid segmentation. In this paper, we assume grid segmentation already has been progressed using VSC BTB HVDC. Then, this paper discusses operating point of HVDC in metropolitan area considering loss minimization and handy flow control. The simulation is proceeded on 2027 KEPCO system.

This paper presents the three-port DC-DC converter modeling and controller design procedure, which is part of the solid-state transformer (SST) to interface medium voltage AC grid to bipolar DC distribution network. Due to the high primary side DC link voltage, the proposed converter employs the three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) topology at the primary side and 2-two level half bridge circuits for each DC distribution network. For the proposed converter particular structure, this paper conducts modeling the three winding transformer and the power transfer between each port. A decoupling method is adopted to simplify the power transfer model. The voltage controller design procedure is presented. In addition, the output current sharing controller is employed for current balancing between the parallel-connected secondary output ports. The proposed circuit and controller performance are verified by experimental results using a 30 kW prototype SST system.

Recently, various energy efficiency optimization activities are ongoing globally by integrating conventional grids with ICT (Information and Communication Technology). In this sense, various smart grid projects, which power suppliers and consumers exchange useful informations bilaterally in real time, have been being carried out. The electric vehicle diffusion program is one of the projects and it has been spotlighted because it could resolve green gas problem, fuel economy and tightening environmental regulations. In this paper, the economics of V2G system which consists of electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure is evaluated comparing electric vehicles for V2G with common electric vehicles. Additional benefits of V2G are analyzed in the viewpoint of load leveling, frequency regulation and operation reserve. To find this benefit, electricity sales is modeled mathematically considering depth of discharge, maximum capacity reduction, etc. Benefit and cost analysis methods with the modeling are proposed to decide whether the introduction of V2G systems. Additionally, the methods will contribute to derive the future production and the unit cost of electric vehicle and battery and to get the technical and economic analysis.

Screen inspection system applied vision and laser scan technology which detect foreign materials caused fuel rod to be damaged, and which inspect fuel rod damage, bowing, distortion and grid damages, was developed to secure reliability and reproductivity of inspection method for nuclear fuel assembly during outage. In further, datum of inspection results will be continuously monitored and given understand the pattern of bowing and distorting for fuel assembly in reactor. Understanding of the pattern will be key technical information to avoid grid demage might be happened during refueling outage and provides important data base for safe operation of nuclear power plant in Korea and world wide.
A number of scientific researches are currently being conducted on the potential health hazards of power frequency electric and magnetic field (EMF). There exists a non-objective and psychological belief that they are harmful, although no scientific and objective proof of such exists. This possible health risk from ELF magnetic field (MF) exposure, especially for children under 17 years of age, is currently one of Korea's most highly contested social issues. Therefore, to assess the magnetic field exposure levels of those children in their general living environments, the personal MF exposure levels of 436 subjects were measured for about 6 years using government funding. Using the measured database, estimation formulas were developed to predict personal MF exposure levels. These formulas can serve as valuable tools in estimating 24-hour personal MF exposure levels without directly measuring the exposure. Three types of estimation formulas were developed by applying evolutionary computation methods such as genetic algorithm (GA) and genetic programming (GP). After tuning the database, the final three formulas with the smallest estimation error were selected, where the target estimation error was approximately 0.03 ${\mu}T$. The seven parameters of each of these three formulas are gender (G), age (A), house type (H), house size (HS), distance between the subject's residence and a power line (RD), power line voltage class (KV), and the usage conditions of electric appliances (RULE).
As the contribution of the Energy Storage System (ESS) on the power system operations has increased, it is required to secure the reliability on the capacity of ESS and this needs to consider the outage rate in calculating the available capacity of ESS. However, the existing method of calculating the outage rate does not consider the configuration of ESS and this does not accurately calculate the available capacity of ESS. For this, this paper analyzes the structural characteristics of ESS in Korean power system and proposes a method to calculate the outage rate of ESS. Through the study cases adopting the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) ESS for providing the frequency response service, the effectiveness of the proposed method verified.
Use of photovoltaic (PV) power generation system will become more widespread in the future due to anticipated cost reduction in PV technology. As the capacity of PV systems increases, a variation of power system frequency may prevent the stable output of PV system. However, the standard for the frequency protection of distributed generation in Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)'s rule does not include the setting of frequency protection. Therefore, this paper analyzes the correlation between the frequency protection requirements and the stability of grid-connected PV system for the adjustable operating setting of frequency protection. The distribution system interconnected with 3 MW PV system is modeled by Matlab/Simulink. The various values of frequency are simulated. For studied cases, the stability of PV system is analyzed. It is concluded that the setting of frequency protection is necessary to consider the stability of PV system.
As the penetration of different types of renewable energy sources (RES) and energy storage systems (ESS) increases, the importance of stability in AC microgrid is being emphasized. Especially, RES and ESS which are operated using power electronics have difference in output characteristics according to control structures. When faults like single-line-to-ground fault or islanding operation occur, this means that a fault should be interpreted in different way. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze fault characteristics in AC microgrid in case of grid-connected mode and standalone mode. In this paper, the fault analysis for AC microgrid is carried out using PSCAD/EMTDC and an overvoltage problem and the countermeasures were proposed.

A sustainability of electricity supply has emerged as a critical issue for low carbon green growth in South Korea. Wind power is the fastest growing source of renewable energy. However, due to its own intermittency and volatility, the power supply generated from wind energy has variability in nature. Hence, accurate forecasting of wind speed and power plays a key role in the effective harvesting of wind energy and the integration of wind power into the current electric power grid. This paper presents a short-term wind speed prediction method based on support vector regression. Moreover, particle swarm optimization is adopted to find an optimum setting of hyper-parameters in support vector regression. An illustration is given by real-world data and the effect of model regularization by particle swarm optimization is discussed as well.
