  • The present study newly developed a firefighters' protective jacket and pants using a Nomex honeycomb structured layer (HPC) in cases of being exposed to flashover or flameover. This study evaluated the protective and comfort functions of an HPC compared to the current KFI firefighters' protective clothing (FPC). The results are as follows. First, thermal protective performance (TPP) of fabric layers was 2.75 times greater for HPC than FPC at $125kW/m^2$. Second, the predicted second and third degree burn areas were smaller for HPC than FPC when using a flame manikin. Third, thermal insulation using a thermal manikin was 0.2 clo greater for HPC than FPC. Fourth, there were no marked differences in maximal performance, mobility, and microclimate temperature/humidity between FPC and HPC through human wear trials. The thermal insulation of HPC was higher than that of FPC; however, any negative effect of HPC thermal insulation on the comfort functions for firefighters was not found. In conclusion, the newly-developed HPC provided more protection in reducing burn injuries from $125kW/m^2$, while no negative impact on maximal performance, mobility and thermal comfort functions of firefighters, which is appropriate for quick-evasive tactics at the flashover, flameover or back draft fires.

  • One species of Rhodophyceae namely Eucheuma cottonii from the coast of Philippine was analyzed with respect to the content of carrageenan and such chemical characteristics as the content of sulphate and 3,6-anhydro-D-galactose and its solubility in potassium chloride solution. In addition, the same chemical properties were tested in the fractions separated by the different concentrations of potassium chloride. In comparison of the results of carrageenan in Eucheuma cottonii samples from Philippine and Chondrus ocellatus samples from Korea, carrageenan content in Eucheuma cottonii was higher than that of Chondrus ocellatus. Both samples showed more than forty-five percent carrageenan content. The Eucheuma cottonii carrageenan showed a higher 3,6-anhydro-D-galactose than the Chondrus ocellatus carrageenan. The sulphate content was higher in Chondrus ocellatus than Eucheuma cottonii. In fractionation of carrageenan by the solubility methods using potassium chloride solution, the yield of Eucheuma cottonii was highest in fraction I, fraction III was next and fraction II was the lowest.

  • Jariieot is a local food prepared by fermentation of salted fish, Chromis notatus. Since its NaC' content is around 20% like other fermented seafoods, reduction NaCl concentration is desirable to minimize the risk of health hazard. Addition of KCl and enrichment of lactic acid fermentation were attempted to solve the problems resulting from low salt concentration. NaCl and KCl were added to a fish, Chromis notatus simultaneously at concentrations of 10 to 4% and 5 to 2%, respectively. Lactic acid bacteria and glucose at final concentration of 2% were also mixed with the above-salt treated fish to prepare jarijeot. The jarijeot was examined periodically for chemical changes during aging and compared with reference jarijeot containing only 20% of NaCl to find out an appropriate method for quality improvement. The content of ATP and its related compounds was not affected by the concentration of NaCl or the presence of lactic acid bacteria. Nearly no difference in contents of free amino nitrogen, trimethylamine oxide, trimethylamine and volatile basic nitrogen was observed between the jarijeot containing 20% of NaCl only and that containing 10% of NaCl, 5% of KCl, 2% of glucose and cells of Pediococcus halophilus. Moreover, sensory evaluation of both kinds of jarijeots revealed almost the same scores. The number of cells of P. halophilus was maintained at concentration of $10^5$cell/ml for 60days' fermentation in the above mentioned jarijeot containing 10% of NaCl. Its pH was dropped down to 4.2. Accordingly it is possible to prepare jarijeot enriched with lactic acid bacteria if KCl and glucose are added at concentration of 5% and 2%, respectively, in addition to NaCl at a final concentration of 10%.

  • Many problems are occurred by using industrial by-product and municipal solid waste in the cement manufacturing process. The main components of chlorine by-pass dust generated by the use of the wastes are $K^+$, $Cl^-$, and a slight amount of heavy metals is also contained. In terms of waste recycling, it is necessary to eliminate the heavy metals. Therefore, in this study, the experiments for the removal of heavy metals from KCl which was produced by chlorine by-pass dust were conducted. In order to find optimum conditions for the removal of heavy metals, we have controlled the amount of water and precipitator. The type and concentration of heavy metals in KCl were analyzed. The concentration of heavy metals decreased as amount of precipitator increased. The heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, and As were not detected in dust A and B, when the mixing ratios between dust A(B) and water were controlled to be 1:2 (1:2, 1:3.5) with the addition of 3% precipitator (NaOCl).

  • This study is to find the optimum draw solution in fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination. Considering osmotic pressure, solubility, and pH, 20 blended fertilizers were screened. Their performance were evaluated in terms of pure water permeate flux, reverse solute flux, and specific reverse solute flux for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The pure water permeate flux of blended fertilizers including KCl were relatively higher. The reverse solute flux and specific reverse solute flux for nitrogen of blended fertilizers containing ${NO_3}^-$ ion were relatively higher than those of the nitrate ion-free draw solution. Those for phosphorus, and potassium of blended fertilizers including $NH_4H_2PO_4$, and $KNO_3$ were relatively higher than those of the phosphorus-free, and potassium-free draw solution, respectively. The blended fertilizer of $NH_4H_2PO_4$ and KCl contains all of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are essential elements of fertilizer, and has the relatively high water permeation flux and the low reverse solute flux for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Therefore, it is the most effective draw solution for fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination.

  • The effects of a simultaneous application of KCl and lime on the root uptake of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;^{85}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ by rice, soybean, Chinese cabbage and radish were investigated through 2 years' greenhouse experiments. At their early growth stages, a mixed solution of the radionuclides was applied to the water or soil surfaces of the culture boxes filled with an acidic loamy-sandy soil for the upper 20cm and $83g/m^2$ of fertilizer KCl and $200g/m^2$ of slake lime were applied to the surfaces. Distribution of radioactivities among plant parts and change in uptake pattern with plant species were not, on the whole, significantly affected by the application. It reduced effectively soil-to-plant transfer factors of $^{85}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ for rice, of all for Chinese cabbage and of $^{54}Mn,\;^{60}Co,\;and\;^{137}Cs$ for radish without their growth inhibition. In rice, $^{85}Sr$ showed the highest decrease $({\sim}60%)$ while, in Chinese cabbage and radish, $^{54}Mn$ did $({\sim}80%)$. The exprimental results can become valuable reference data to establish countermeasures against a radioactive contamination of farm-land during plant growth.

  • For diamond/metal composites it is better to use diamond particles coated with metal carbide because of improved wettability between the diamond particles and the matrix. In this study, the coating of diamond particles with a chromium carbide layer is investigated. On heating diamond and chromium powders at $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ in molten salts of LiCl, KCl, $CaCl_2$, the diamond particles are coated with $Cr_7C_3$. The surfaces of the diamond powders are analyzed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The average thickness of the $Cr_7C_3$ coating layers is calculated from the result of the particle size analysis. By using the molten salt method, the $Cr_7C_3$ coating layer is uniformly formed on the diamond particles at a relatively low temperature at which the graphitization of the diamond particles is avoided. Treatment temperatures are lower than those in the previously proposed methods. The coated layer is thickened with an increase in heating temperature up to $900^{\circ}C$. The coating reaction of the diamond particles with chromium carbide is much more rapid in $LiCl-KCl-CaCl_2$ molten salts than with the molten salts of $KCl-CaCl_2$.

  • Objectives : High blood pressure (also called Hypertension), which is the blood pressure that is higher than normal, is a chronic disease and causes various complications. Historically, Traditional Herbal Prescriptions (THP) have treated many diseases. However, there are not many studies on the treatment of hypertension with THP, very few studies have investigated the interactions between the co-administration of synthetic anti-hypertensives and THP. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the vasorelaxant activities of 10 THP in rat thoracic aortas pre-contracted with potassium chloride (KCl). Methods : An electric extractor was used to extract THP in distilled water for 2h. Rat thoracic aortas were isolated and pre-contracted using KCl in organ chambers containing 10 ml Krebs Henseleit (KH) buffer. THP extracts were added in increasing concentrations (10-1000 ㎍/mL) to investigate vasorelaxant activities. The vasorelaxant activities induced by THP were expressed as a percentage in response to contraction generated by KCl. Results : Among the 10 THP, Dangguisu-san, Mahwang-tang, Bulwhangeumjeonggi-san, Jakyakgamcho-tang, and Hyangsapyeongwi-san showed significant vasorelaxant activities. Maekmundong-tang, Bojungikgi-tang, Samryeongbaekchul-san, Yukmijihwang-tang, and Insampaedok-san showed no significant effect. Also, in co-administration with amlodipine, Mahwang-tang showed higher vasorelaxant activities than amlodipine alone, and Hyangsapyeongwi-san showed greater vasorelaxant activities at low concentrations but inhibited amlodipine's vasorelaxant activities at high concentrations. Conclusion : The results of these experiments are expected to provide useful data to establish guidelines for THPs and co-administration with western antihypertensive drugs to treat hypertension.
