  • The Communication Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) as the one of the national space program has been developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARl). The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the main payloads ofCOMS which will provide consistent monitoring of ocean-colour around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. The ocean color observation from geostationary platform is required to remedy the coverage constraints imposed by polar orbiting platforms. In this paper the main characteristics of GOCI are described and compared with the current ocean color sensors. The GOCI will provide the measurement data of 6 visible channels and 2 nearinfrared channels (40Onm - 900nm). The high radiometric sensitivity is essential of ocean color sensor because of the weak water leaving radiance.

  • COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is the geostationary satellite for the mission of satellite communication, ocean monitoring, and meteorological service. It is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2008. Ocean payload of COMS named as GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) observes ocean color and derives the chlorophyll concentrlition, the concentration of dissolved organic material and so on. In operational oceanography, satellite derived data products are used to provide forecasting and now casting of the ocean and coastal water state. In this work, conceptual design of structural part of GOCI is carried out and two baseline concepts are proposed. The one is dioptric module that uses lens system and the other is TMA(Three Mirror Anastigmat) module that uses mirror system. Trade-off studies between two concepts are investigated by considering optical and mechanical performances. Finally, on-going tasks and future development plan are briefly discussed.

  • KSR-II, a two-stage sounding rocket of KARI was launched successfully at the west coast of the Korean Peninsula at 1000LST, June 11, 1998. For the ozone measurement mission, 8-channel UV and visible radiometers were onboard the rocket. The rocket measured the first in situ stratospheric and mesospheric ozone density profile over Korea during its ascending phase using the radiometer. Comparisons with Dobson spectrophotometer, ozonesonde, and HALOE onboard the UARS are shown together. Our results are in reasonable agreements with others.

  • The temperature control system which is using liquid and gaseous nitrogen has been known as the most economical system to simulate space temperature condition due to relatively not expansive price of the liquid nitrogen (less than 0.2 USD per liter). And, among these systems, the closed loop system which circulates compressed nitrogen gas come from sprayed liquid nitrogen by blower and makes a target temperature with heat from an electrical heater and flow rate of liquid nitrogen is prevail all over the world. But, this complete closed loop system requires expansive equipments such as blower, heater, and liquid nitrogen injector, and special maintenance on the system. Therefore, KARI is developing efficient and simple open loop system which utilizes liquid and gaseous nitrogen with eliminating a special blower and other expansive units. In this study, this open loop system with more efficiency and flexibility will be designed and introduced.

  • KARI is achieving the KSLV program according to National Space Technology Development Program. In this paper, the authors are intended to introduce the Integrated Power Plant (abb. IPP) test facility which will be constructed for the variety of tests on KSLV program. IPP test facility refers to comprehensive testing equipment for liquid rocket launch vehicle. Using this facility, KARl can verify the adaptiveness of parts and subsystems for launch vehicle and finally can qualify the system characteristics of launch vehicle doing kinds of test including hot firing test. Using this facility, KARI can simulate the vehicle launching circumstances and it make to predict the performance of launch vehicle when its flight test.

  • COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite), planned for launch in 2008, will be the first Korean ocean-meteorological geostationary satellite to provide capabilities for monitoring weather and ocean. Under the direction of Korean government, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) has the overall responsibility of COMS development project. The main development project was started in September 2003. In this paper, the overview of COMS development project and the conceptual design of the meteorological data service are introduced.
