  • The paper studied the scheme of applying the MPEG-4 SVC signal to the Ka band satellite broadcasting system through the JSCC system to resolve the rain fading problem generated when providing the Ka band HDTV satellite broadcasting service. The Ka band satellite broadcasting system is based on the VCM mode of the DVB-S2, and the SVC signal is considered as one of the spatial scalability, the SNR scalability and the temporal scalability. The JSCC system jointed all the layers of the source coding system and the channel coding system, and allocated bit rate to source coding and channel coding for each layer to get the optimum receiving quality. The layers are consists of a base layer and an enhancement layer, and the bit rate of each layer is affected by the SVC signal. The applicability of the three SVC signals to the Ka band satellite broadcasting service is analyzed with respect to the rain fading, and the scheme of applying the most excellent SVC to the service is considered.

  • Transmission electron microscopy of an ArGnthnmoebo isolate (KA/LS) from a contact lens case revealed bacterial endosymbionts within cytoplasm of the amoebae. The Acnnthamoebn isolate belonged to the morphological group ll. Based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) - restriction fragment leilgth polymorphism (RFLP) of 185 ribosomal RNA coding DNA (rDNA) , the isolate was identified as A. Iwnunensis. Strain typing by isoenzyme analysis using isorlectric focusing (IEF) and mitochondrial (Ent) DNA RFLP revealed that the isolate was closely related with KA/Ll , the most predominant type of isolates from contact lens storage casas, KA/E2, a clinical isolate, KA/W4, previou:fly reported to host endosymbionts. and L3a strains of A. Iwnunensis. The endosymbionts were similar to those of KA/W4 in a.jpects that they were randomly distributed in both trophozoites and cysts, and were rod-shaped bacteri3 measuring approximately 1.38 x 0.50 ㎛. But the number of endosymbionts per amoeba was significantly lower than that of KA/W4. They were neither limited by phagosomal membranes nor included in lacunae- like stnlcture.

  • In this paper, the frequency synthesis(FS) MMIC and the receive MMICs were developed for a Ka-band compact radar. Also a compact Ka-band frequency synthesizer and a receiver were developed based on those MMICs. The FS MMIC and the wireless-receiver(WR) MMIC to receive the baseband frequency were manufactured by a 65 nm CMOS process and the front-end(FE) MMIC to receive the Ka-band frequency was manufactured by a 150 nm GaN process. Linear frequency modulation waveform and pulse waveform for the transmit signal were measured by output signal of frequency synthesizer. The measured performance of developed receiver including the FE MMICs and the WR MMIC were ≧ 80 dB gain, ≦ 6 dB noise figure and ≧ 10 dBm at OP1dB. The measurement results of the developed frequency synthesizer and the receiver including the manufactured MMICs showed that they could be applied to Ka-band compact radar.

  • Chloroplasts isolated from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves contained an enzyme activity which catalyzed hydroxylation of ent-kaurenoic acid (ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid; ent-KA) to steviol (ent-13-hydroxy kaur-16-en-19-oic acid), the diterpenoid carboxylic alcohol which is the aglycone of sweet stevioside-related glycosides. $[^(14)C]-methylated$ ent-KA was used to localize ent-KA hydroxylase. $[^(14)C]-methyl-KA$ was most actively was transformed into methyl-steviol in chloroplast. The enzymatic activity was found in stroma fraction but not in thylakoid membrane in Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. However, ent-KA 13-hydroxylase activity was not detected in stroma fraction of either Spinacia oleracea and Solidago altissima. The reaction products using $[^(14)C]-methyl-KA$ were purified and identified on TLC autoradiogram. The hydroxylation of ent-KA from stromal protein to form steviol required NADPH and oxygen. FAD and riboflavin stimulated the enzyme activity 1.5-and 1.7-fold, respectively. It also turned out that the activity of this enzyme using methyl-KA as a substrate was 16.7% that of ent-KA. The purified ent-KA 13-hydroxylase did not act on t-cinnamic acid, 4-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, choline and resorcinol, known as monooxygenase and hydroxylase substrates.

  • This paper describes performance data and design information on a reflection-type analog phase shifter used in Ka-band. Arranging a couple of GaAs hyperabrupt junction varactor diode parallel in a circuit, and applying reactance matching method accordingly, it is possible to 831 a large the phase shift. Design equation is formulated theoretically. Since the assembly process is important in Ka-band, this paper also includes the assembly process that is essential to minimize the generation of parasitic elements during the assembly process. It is obtained variable phase shift 220$^{\circ}$${\pm}$7$^{\circ}$ and insertion loss 5 dB${\pm}$1 dB as a measured result larger than the existing figure in Ka-band.

  • Ka-band payload of COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) launched in June 2010 was developed by ETRI with Korean local companies and also the in-orbit test (IOT) for the Ka-band payload was carried out entirely with domestic technology. The Ka-band payload IOT consisted of the antenna pattern measurements and the payload RF performance test was performed during about 40 days from 10 days after the launch. In this paper, the IOT methods and the results for the Ka-band payload are described in detail. According to the comparisons of each IOT test result with the corresponding ground test result, we can show that the Ka-band payload IOT and verification was successfully achieved and that all Ka-band channels of COMS are to be normal.

  • Purpose : Loss of hippocampal interneurons in dentate gyrus has been reported in patients with severe temporal lobe epilepsy and in animals treated with kainic acid(KA). Interneurons contain $Ca^{2+}$- binding protein parvalbumin(PV). The effects of kainic acid on parvalbumin-immunoreactive (PV-IR) interneurons in dentate gyrus were investigated in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. Methods : Cultured hippocampal slices from postnatal day nine C57/BL6 mice were exposed to $10{\mu}M$ KA, and were observed at 0, 8, 24, 48, 72 hours after a one hour KA exposure. Neuronal injury was determined by morphologic changes of PV-IR interneuron in dentate gyrus. Results : Transient(1 hour) exposure of hippocampal explant cultures to KA produced marked varicosities in dendrites of PV-IR interneuron in dentate gyrus and the shaft of interbeaded dendrite is often much thinner than those in control. The presence of varicosities in dendrites was reversible with KA washout. The dendrites of KA treated explants were no longer beaded at 8, 24, 48 and 72 hours after KA exposure. The number of cells in PV-IR interneurons in dentate gyrus was decreased at 0, 8 hours after exposure. But there was no significant difference in 24, 48 and 72 hours recovery group compared with control group. Conclusion : The results suggested that loss of PV-IR interneurons in dentate gyrus is transient, and is not accompanied by PV-IR interneuronal cell death.

  • Previous studies have shown that kainic acid (KA) causes an elevation of hippocampal proenkephalin mRNA level. However, the role of proto-oncogene products, such as c-Fos, c-Jun and Fra proteins in the regulation of KA-induced proenkephalin mRNA increase in the hippocampus has not been well characterized. Thus, in the present study, the effect of cycloheximide (CHX) on KA-induced proenkephalin mRNA and immediate early gene products induction was examined. After pretreating with either vehicle or CHX (20 mg/kg, s.c.) for 30 min, KA (10 mg/kg) was administered s.c. The animals were sacrificed 1,2, or 8 hrs after KA administration. Total RNA and were isolated for Northern blot assay, and proteins were isolated for Western and electrophoretic gel-shift assays. First, we found that CHX inhibited KA-induced proenkephalin mRNA increase without altering intracellular proenkephalin protein level. Secondly, Western blot assays showed that KA increased c-Fos, c-Jun and Fra proteins at 1,2, and 8 hrs and CHX inhibited these immediate early gene products. Finally, electrophoretic gel shift assays revealed that KA increased both AP-1 and ENKCRE-2 DNA binding activities. Furthermore, CHX attenuated KA-induced AP-1 and ENKCRE-2 DNA binding activities. Both AP-1 and ENKCRE-2 DNA binding activities were abolished by cold AP-1 or ENKCRE-2 oligonucleotides, and further reduced by antibodies against c-Fos or c-Jun. Antibody against CREB reduced ENKCRE-2, but not AP-1, DNA binding activity. Our results suggest that on-going protein synthesis is required for elevation of hippocampal proenkephalin mRNA level induced by KA. All c-Fos, c-Jun, and Fra proteins appears to be involved in the regulation of hippocampal proenkephalin mRNA level induced by KA (This study was supported by a grant from KOSEF).
