  • Fine $La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3$ nanocrystalline powders have been successfully prepared by modified citrate pyrolysis process. The obtained LCMO nanoscale grains have a mean particle size of about 30 nm under optimal treatment conditions. The particle size can be controlled by adjusting processing parameters, such as treatment temperature and calcination time. X-ray diffraction, SEM and magnetoresistance effect were employed to study the crystal structure, morphology and magnetic property of these nanosized powders. A novel MR effect (MR > 45% (0 K < T < 340 K)) at room temperature has been found.

  • Irradiation of 1,3-cyclohexanedione and p-benzoquinone in methanol gave 3-methoxycyclohex-2-en-1-one. Allyl derivative of the 1,3-diketone was prepared as enol from and irradiated in methanol in the presence of p-benzoquinone to give the same type of photoproduct, i.e., 2-allyl-3-methoxycyclohex-2-en-1-one. Allyldibenzoylmethane was synthesized and irradiated with p-benzoauinone in methanol but no remarkable amount of photoproduct was obtained.

  • A bioassay-guided fractionation of the active chloroform extracts of the rhizomes of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. led to the isolation of a potential cytotoxic principle, curcumin (1), along with two inactive compounds, (E)-4-(3',4'- dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-ol (2) and (E)-4- (3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1- yl acetate (3). Curcumin (1) showed a significant cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines $(Col2;\;2.30,\;A549;\;12.30,\;SNU638;\;IC_{50}\;18.80\;{\mu}g/ml)$.

  • In this paper, an accurate ray-tracing based visual analysis method of lenticular 3D liquid liquid crystal display (LCDs) and some analysis results are presented. In the developed method, the geometric optics analysis is performed on the single 3D unit pixel of 3D lenticular LCD. It is shown that the display characteristics of 3D lenticular LCD panels of arbitrary size can be evaluated through the 3D unit pixel analysis. The analysis results of a few representative structures of 3D lenticular LCDs are compared.

  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) play important role in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. PI3Ks constitute a lipid kinase family which modulates the function of numerous substrates involved in the regulation of cell survival, cell cycle progression and cellular growth. Herein, we describe the ligand based pharmacophore combined with molecular docking studies methods to identify new potent PI3K inhibitors. Several pharmacophore models were generated and validated by Guner-Henry scoring Method. The best models were utilized as 3D pharmacophore query to screen against ZINC database (Chemical and Natural) and the retrieved hits were further validated by fitness score, Lipinski's rule of five. Finally four compounds were found to have good potential and they may act as novel lead compounds for PI3K inhibitor designing.

  • It has been demonstrated that an unidentified cytosolic factor(s) reduces $K_{ACh}$ channel function. Therefore, this study attempted to elucidate the cytosolic factor. Fresh cytosol isolated from normal heart (FC) depressed the $K_{ACh}$ channel activity, but cytosol isolated from the ischemic hearts (IC) did not modulate the channel function. Electrophorectic analysis revealed that a protein of ${\sim}80 kDa was markedly reduced or even lost in IC. By using peptide sequencing analysis and Western blot, this 80 kDa protein was identified as transferrin (receptor-mediated $Fe^{3+}$ transporter, 76 kDa). Direct application of transferrin (100 nM) to the cytoplasmic side of inside-out patches decreased the open probability ($P_o$, 12.7${\pm}6.4%, n=4) without change in mean open time (${\tau}_o$, $98.5{\pm}1.3$%, n=4). However, the equimolar apotransferrin, which is free of $Fe^{3+}$, had no effect on the channel activity (N*$P_o$, $129.1{\pm}13.5$%, n=3). Directly applied $Fe^{3+}$ (100 nM) showed results similar to those of transferrin (N*$P_o$: $21.1{\pm}3.9$%, n=5). However $Fe^{2+}$ failed to reduce the channel function (N*$P_o$, $106.3{\pm}26.8$%, n=5). Interestingly, trivalent cation La3+ inhibited N*$P_o$ of the channel ($6.1{\pm}3.0$%, n=3). Taken together, these results suggest that $Fe^{3+}$ bound to transferrin can modulate the $K_{ACh}$ channel function by its electrical property as a polyvalent cation.

  • Objective : Recently, many studies have showed the evidences of the effect of acupuncture treatment through scientific methods. We performed electro-acupuncture on Taixi(K3) and observed the change of brain activity using fMRI. Methods : To see the effect of electro-acupuncture stimulation on Taixi(K3), the experiment was carried out on twelve healthy volunteers, using the gradient echo sequence with the 3.0T whole-body fMRI system(ISOL). After the needle insertion on K3, 2 Hz of electric stimulation was given for 30 seconds, repeated five times, with 30 seconds' intervals. Result & Conclusions : Unilateral electro-acupuncture stimulation on K3 increased the brain activity in Brodman Area 8, 6, 9, 13, 21, 22, 38, 40, 43, 2, 5, 10, 20, 24, 32, 34, 37, 39, 41, 42. and decreased the brain activity in Brodman Area 9, 13, 38, 22, 31, 3, 6, 10, 21, 25, 29, 30. Group Averaged Brain activity induced by Unilateral Electro-acupuncture Stimulation on K3 was increased in Brodman Area 10, 22, 42, 43, 44 and was decreased inn Brodman Area 6 and pyrogen test of Bee venom.
