  • Feature-based similarity retrieval become an important research issue in image database systems. The features of image data are useful to discrimination of images. In this paper, we propose the high speed k-Nearest Neighbor search algorithm based on Self-Organizing Maps. Self-Organizing Maps(SOM) provides a mapping from high dimensional feature vectors onto a two-dimensional space and generates a topological feature map. A topological feature map preserves the mutual relations (similarities) in feature spaces of input data, and clusters mutually similar feature vectors in a neighboring nodes. Therefore each node of the topological feature map holds a node vector and similar images that is closest to each node vector. We implemented a k-NN search for similar image classification as to (1) access to topological feature map, and (2) apply to pruning strategy of high speed search. We experiment on the performance of our algorithm using color feature vectors extracted from images. Promising results have been obtained in experiments.

  • This study suggests the assessment technique for climate change effect on drought in Korea based on the AR4 SRES A2 scenario reported in IPCC fourth assessment report in 2007. IPCC provides monthly outputs of 24 climate models through the DDC. One of the models is BCM2 model which was developed at BCCR in Norway and NCEP data is used for downscaling. The K-NN(K-Nearest Neighbor) and ANN(Artificial Neural Network) are selected as downscaling technique to downscale the temperature and precipitation at Seoul station in Korea. K-NN could downscale both temperature and precipitation well. ANN made a good result for temperature, but it gave a divergence result in precipitation. Finally, SPI of Seoul station is computed to evaluate the effect of climate change on drought. BCM2 predicted that temperature will increase and drought severity will increase because of the increased drought spell at Seoul station.

  • This paper presents a maximum power point tracking(MPPT) of Photovoltaic system with chopping ratio of DC-DC converter considered load. A variation of solar irradiation is most important factor in the MPPT of PV system. That is nonlinear, aperiodic and complicated. The paper consists of solar radiation source, DC-DC converter, DC motor and load(cf, pump). NN algorithm apply to DC-DC converter through an adaptive control of neural network, calculates converter-chopping ratio using an adaptive control of NN. The results of an adaptive control of NN compared with the results of converter-chopping ratio which are calculated mathematical modeling and evaluate the proposed algorithm. The experimental data show that an adequacy of the algorithm was established through the compared data.

  • In this paper, we propose the pattern classification algorithm of recognizing wrist movements based on electromyogram(EMG) to raise the recognition rate. We consider 30 characteristics of EMG signals wirh the root mean square(RMS) and the difference absolute standard deviation value(DASDV) for the extraction of precise features from EMG signals. To get the groups of each wrist movement, we estimated 2-dimension features. On this basis, we divide each group into two parts with mean to compare and promote the recognition rate of pattern classification effectively. For the motion classification based on EMG, the k-nearest neighbor(k-NN) is used. In this paper, the recognition rate is 92.59% and 0.84% higher than the study before.

  • Scopolia parviflora Nakai, a rare and endangered species, is the sole plant producing tropane alkaloids (TA) among the Korean native species. In order to enhance TA productivity the SP72 root line was selected by screening 100 of root line, and the optimal culture media for root growth and TA production were investigated with the SP72 roots. Based on the several media, SH and 2B5 medium were determined as growth medium and White and NN medium as production medium. Among the four combinations of two-stage culture, 2BN (2B5 as growth medium plus NN as production medium) showed more enhanced root growth and TA production as compared with production media of White and NN medium and growth media of SH and 2B5 medium, respectively. However, bubble column bioreactor (BCB) cultures applying two-stage culture did not reveal the effective results despite of the each successful operation of two-stage culture in conical flasks and BCB cultures.

  • This study proposes an adaptive control algorithm for lateral motion of a UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) using an NN (Neural Networks). The lateral motion of the UGV can be corrupted with various uncertainties such as side slip. In order to compensate the performance degradation of the UGV under various uncertainties, an NN-based adaptive control is designed by utilizing a virtual control concept. Since both the drift and input gain terms are uncertain, the proposed method adapts the whole terms related to the difference between the nominal and real systems. To avoid a singularity problem with the adaptive control, the affine property of the UGV dynamic model is utilized and the overall closed-loop stability is analyzed rigorously. Finally, numerical simulations using Carsim are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • Dramatic price increases of fossil fuels and the economic development of emerging nations accelerates the transformation of forest lands into monocultures, e.g. for biofuel production. On this account, cost efficient methods to enable the monitoring of land resources has become a vital ambition. The application of remote sensing techniques has become an integral part of forest attribute estimation and mapping. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potentials of the kNN method by combining terrestrial with remotely sensed data for the development of a pixel-based monitoring system for the small scaled mosaic of different land use types of the off-reserve forests of the Goaso forest district in Ghana, West Africa. For this reason, occurrence and distribution of land use types like cocoa and non-timber forest resources, such as bamboo and raphia palms, were estimated, applying the kNN method to ASTER satellite data. Averaged overall accuracies, ranging from 79% for plantain, to 83% for oil palms, were found for single-attribute classifications, whereas a multi-attribute approach showed overall accuracies of up to 70%. Values of k between 3 and 6 seem appropriate for mapping bamboo. Optimisation of spectral bands improves results considerably.

  • This was a preliminary research for the goal of understanding between internal structure of Osteogenesis Imperfecta Murine (OIM) bone and its fragility. 54 hyperspectral bone data sets were captured by using JASCO 2000 Raman spectrometer at UMKC-CRISP (University of Missouri-Kansas City Center for Research on Interfacial Structure and Properties). Each data set consists of 1,091 data points from 9 OIM bones. The original captured hyperspectral data sets were noisy and base-lined ones. We removed the noise and corrected the base-lined data for the final efficient classification. High dimensional Raman hyperspectral data on OIM bones was reduced by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and efficiently classified for the first time. We confirmed OIM bones could be classified such as strong, middle and weak one by using the coefficients of their PCA or LDA. Through experiment, we investigated the efficiency of classification on the reduced OIM bone data by the Bayesian classifier and K -Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) classifier. As the experimental result, the case of LDA reduction showed higher classification performance than that of PCA reduction in the two classifiers. K-NN classifier represented better classification rate, compared with Bayesian classifier. The classification performance of K-NN was about 92.6% in case of LDA.

  • This study aims to identify the most effective statistical feature selecting method and context window size for word sense disambiguation using supervised methods. In this study, features were selected by four different methods: information gain, document frequency, chi-square, and relevancy. The result of weight comparison showed that identifying the most appropriate features could improve word sense disambiguation performance. Information gain was the highest. SVM classifier was not affected by feature selection and showed better performance in a larger feature set and context size. Naive Bayes classifier was the best performance on 10 percent of feature set size. kNN classifier on under 10 percent of feature set size. When feature selection methods are applied to word sense disambiguation, combinations of a small set of features and larger context window size, or a large set of features and small context windows size can make best performance improvements.
