Professional Inclination of Library and Information Science (LIS) Students of India: A Study of Socioeconomic Background and Career Choice Factors

  • The purpose of the study is to assess the professional inclination, academic and social background, family status and their occupation, gender distribution, choice of work, and their perceptions of aspirant LIS students. The study examined the various career choice factors and sources of motivation that influence the students of LIS profession. The data has been collected from the 251 LIS students' enrolled five prominent universities of North India. The results indicate that majority of female students join the LIS profession because of employment opportunities. Most of the respondents are from rural areas, hails to middle class families and their educational background in Arts/Humanities and Social Science subjects. Majority of the respondents choose the LIS profession as primary career because for the better employment possibilities. The study recommends the public awareness about the LIS profession in India.

LII/LIS 기법을 이용한 층류확산화염 매연입자의 정량화 (Quantitative Measurements of Soot Particles in a Laminar Diffusion Flame Using a LII/LIS Technique)

  • In this study, the quantification of soot particles in laminar diffusion flame with LII/LIS methods was performed. In these quantification, soot diameter, number density and volume fraction are included. For the quatification of soot particles, calibration tests are needed and the development of algorithm has to be performed. So, in this study, extinction and scattering test at co-flow burner were performed to acquire calibration data. And algorithm for LII/LIS simultaneous measurement for the quantification of soot were developed. The algorithm, which was the quantification of simultaneous photographing using one ICCD camera, to measure LII/LIS signal simultaneously, the best fitted light intensity and acquisition time was needed.

  • The distribution of volume fraction, mean diameter and number density of soot particles are measured quantitatively in a co-flow ethylene diffusion flame using a simultaneous LII/LIS measurement technique. The LII/LIS system and the measured values are, respectively, calibrated and evaluated by comparing to the informations obtained from laser light. extinction/scattering experiments, LII signal shows some sensitivity to the laser light intensity when laser power density exceeds a certain value(threshold). It is also found that there is an optimal laser intensity and a delay time in order to obtain the best result using the simultaneous LII/LIS measurement technique.

Perception on the Use of Mobile Phones in Retrieving Information from Academic Libraries: A developing country perspective

  • The purpose of the study is to identify the perception of the Library and Information Science (LIS) specialists about the use of mobile phones in retrieving information. It investigates the present status of the LIS specialists regarding mobile phone usage, perceptions regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries and points out the possible drawbacks and their solutions for embracing mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries and providing some suggestions. The methodology includes a quantitative approach. The authors used a survey method using a structured questionnaire to measure the perception of LIS specialists regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries. The findings confirmed that the majority (72%) of LIS specialists have the experience of using mobile phones for more than 10 years. Findings also indicate that the LIS specialists have agreed with the statements of advantages of using mobile phones. This paper concludes that the respondents also agreed regarding the possible advantages of introducing mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries. The paper explores the original perceptions of LIS specialists regarding the use of mobile phones in retrieving information from libraries.

  • Based on the design of the LIS of GuangZhou and BeiJing, this paper discusses the resolution of the LIS with the kernel of process management. It applies the idea of workflow in the management supporting stratum, applies the process-oriented mechanism in the definition, coordination, supervision and control of the management process. The scheme has the character of information-media-oriented, work process dynamic changing supported, application system extended and restructure supported and is independent of the running environment of specific work.. Due to the previous character, the LIS is flexible, useable, elastic and able to support the dynamic application.

  • 이 연구에서는 대학원 지원자들이 특정 연구분야가 강한 대학원을 선택하는 데 도움을 주기 위해 어느 대학원이 어떤 연구분야에서 특히 강한가를 파악할 수 있는 계량정보학적 분석 방법을 제안하였다. 분석을 위해 미국의 상위 10개 문헌정보학 대학원을 선정하고, 각 대학원 교수진의 최근 10년 간의 연구논문과 홈페이지에 등록되어 있는 관심분야를 수집하였다. 연구생산성 데이터가 관심분야 데이터에 비해 더 신뢰할 수 있는 분석 결과를 보였으며, 빈도 데이터 분석과 대응일치 분석 결과 각 대학이 어느 주제분야에서 특히 강한가를 파악할 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라 대학원간의 인접성을 측정할 수 있었다.

Bibliometric Assessment of Library and Information Science Journals in India (1912-2016)

  • This paper briefly elucidates the journey of Library and Information Science (LIS) journals published from India since 1912-2016. The study explores that 196 LIS journals have been produced in India during the past 11 decades covering the period from 1912-2016. The states namely New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and West Bengal have contributed significantly andNew Delhi emerges as the most productive city among the others regarding the production of LIS journals. The study reveals that out of total 196 journals, 15 have been indexed in the University Grants Commission Academic Performance Indicators List and 41 have found their place in national and international indexing and abstracting sources.

모 선박용 디젤 엔진 제조업체를 대상으로 ACGIH Lifting TLV®의 현장 적용 및 평가 (Field Application and Evaluation of the ACGIH Lifting TLV®)

  • American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) adopted the Lifting Threshold Limit Values ($TLVs^{(R)}$) in 2005 as a guideline for protecting the workers from work-related low back and shoulder disorders associated with repetitive lifting tasks. The TLVs consist of three tables with recommended weight limits for lifting tasks and their determination procedures are simple. The TLVs sans the material weight/the recommended values (LITLVs) were obtained from 45 lifting tasks in ship engine manufacturing factories. These values were compared and correlated with the Recommended Weight Limits (RWLs) and lifting indices (LIs) determined by the Revised Lifting Equation (LE) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The average ratio, LITLVs/LIs, was 0.8 (LITLVs: $1.3{\pm}0.8$, LIs: $1.6{\pm}0.7$). Thus, the TLVs underestimated the risk than the LE. The LITLVs were highly correlated with LIs (r=0.82). The predicted value of LITLVs when LIs=1 wa 0.76. Using the predicted TLVs the higher risk ones of a large number of tasks can be screened to be further investigated.

한국 문헌정보학 교육 및 연구의 발전 동향에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Library & Information Science Education and Research Development in Korea)

  • 본 논문은 우리나라에서 문헌정보학 교육과 연구 분야에서의 활동과 실적을 조사 및 정리해 보고, 이 분야 발전을 위하여 앞으로의 방향을 모색해보는데 연구 의의가 있다. 연구결과 문헌정보학 분야에서의 주요 이슈는 다음과 같이 나타났다. 1) 국내 문헌정보학과들은 교과과정을 꾸준히 재구성 중에 있다. 2) IT 교육을 강화해나가고 있다. 3) (주제) 전문직 사서를 배출하기 위하여 학부과정에서 복수전공 과정을 도입하고 있다. 4) 연구영역에서 활발한 분야는 도서관경영, 정보조직, 정보학 등으로 나타났다. 5) 최근 들어 연구 분야가 다양화되고 있는데 정보검색, 기록관리, 출판 분야로 영역이 확장되고 있다.
