Explosions inside transportation tunnels might result in failure of tunnel structures. This study investigated the failure mechanisms of circular cast-iron tunnels in saturated soil subjected to medium internal blast loading. This issue is crucial to tunnel safety as many transportation tunnels run through saturated soils. At the same time blast loading on saturated soils may induce residual excess pore pressure, which may result in soil liquefaction. A series of numerical simulations were carried out using Finite Element program LS-DYNA. The effect of soil liquefaction was simulated by the Federal Highway soil model. It was found that the failure modes of tunnel lining were differed with different levels of blast loading. The damage and failure of the tunnel lining was progressive in nature and they occurred mainly during lining vibration when the main event of blast loading was over. Soil liquefaction may lead to more severe failure of tunnel lining. Soil deformation and soil liquefaction were determined by the coupling effects of lining damage, lining vibration, and blast loading. The damage of tunnel lining was a result of internal blast loading as well as dynamic interaction between tunnel lining and saturated soil, and stress concentration induced by a ventilation shaft connected to the tunnel might result in more severe lining damage.
Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is necessary to predict and to control the operating conditions. Especially, it is important to develop models of the blast furnace to predict the cohesive zone because shape of the cohesive zone influences overall operating conditions of blast furnace such as gas flow, chemical reactions and temperature. Because many previous blast furnace models have assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, it was not possible to evaluate the shape change of cohesive zone in relation with operating conditions such as PCR, blast condition, and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace processes. In this model, cohesive zone is determined by the solid temperature. Finite volume method is employed for numerical simulation. To find location of the cohesive zone, entire calculation procedure is iterated until converged. Through this approach, shape of the cohesive zone, velocity and temperature within the furnace are predicted from the model.
Field resistance is defined as the resistance that allows effective control of a parasite under natural field condition and is durable when exposed to new races of that parasite. To identify the genes for field resistance to rice blast, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) conferring the resistance for races and blast nursery screening in japonica rice cultivars were detected and mapped using SSR markers. QTL analysis was carried out in 190 RILs population from the cross between Suweon365 (moderately resistant) and Chucheong (highly susceptible). Twelve QTLs against nine blast races inoculated were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 11 and 12. They explained from 5.1% to 34.9% of total phenotypic variation. Eight QTLs against blast nursery screening in four regions for three years were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 11 and 12. The phenotypic variation explained by each QTL ranged from 4.3% to 37.7%. Three chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) of $BC_2F_6$ by backcross method were developed to transfer the QTLs into the susceptible cultivar Chucheong as a recurrent parent. A CSSL4-1 containing two QTLs qLB6.2 and qLB7 against blast races showed to the reaction of 6 to 7 at blast nursery in two regions for two years. The CSSL4-2 and CSSL93 containing QTLs, qLB11.2 and qLB12.1 of the resistance against leaf blast in blast nursery screening, respectively, had enhanced the resistance for blast nursery screening across two regions and in two years.
This paper investigates the possibility of controlling the response of typical portal frame structures to blast loading using a combination of semi-active and passive control devices. A one storey reinforced concrete portal frame is modelled using non-linear finite elements with each column discretised into multiple elements to capture the higher frequency modes of column vibration response that are typical features of blast responses. The model structure is subjected to blast loads of varying duration, magnitude and shape, and the critical aspects of the response are investigated over a range of structural periods in the form of blast load response spectra. It is found that the shape or length of the blast load is not a factor in the response, as long as the period is less than 25% of the fundamental structural period. Thus, blast load response can be expressed strictly as a function of the momentum applied to the structure by a blast load. The optimal device arrangements are found to be those that reduce the first peak of the structural displacement and also reduce the subsequent free vibration of the structure. Semi-active devices that do not increase base shear demands on the foundations in combination with a passive yielding tendon are found to provide the most effective control, particularly if base shear demand is an important consideration, as with older structures. The overall results are summarised as response spectra for eventual potential use within standard structural design paradigms.
This paper focuses on the stochastic response analysis of industrial masonry chimneys to surface blast-induced random ground motions by using a three dimensional finite element model. Underground blasts induce ground shocks on nearby structures. Depending on the distance between the explosion centre and the structure, masonry structures will be subjected to ground motions due to the surface explosions. Blast-induced random ground motions can be defined in terms of the power spectral density function and applied to each support point of the 3D finite element model of the industrial masonry system. In this paper, mainly a parametric study is conducted to estimate the effect of the blast-induced ground motions on the stochastic response of a chimney type masonry structure. With this purpose, different values of charge weight and distance from the charge centre are considered for the analyses of the chimney. The results of the study underline the remarkable effect of the surface blast-induced ground motions on the stochastic behaviour of industrial masonry type chimneys.
This paper focuses on the mesh-size dependency in numerical simulations of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to blast loading. A tensile failure criterion that can minimize the mesh-dependency of simulation results is introduced based on the fracture energy theory. In addition, conventional plasticity based damage models for concrete such as the CSC model and the HJC model, which are widely used for blast analyses of concrete structures, are compared with the orthotropic model that adopts the introduced tensile failure criterion in blast tests to verify the proposed criterion. The numerical predictions of the time-displacement relations at the mid-span of RC beams subjected to blast loading are compared with experimental results. The analytical results show that the numerical error according to the change in the finite element mesh size is substantially reduced and the accuracy of the numerical results is improved by applying a unique failure strain value determined by the proposed criterion.
A portable recoilless guided missile generates a strong back blast and impulsive noise at the nozzle when it launches. In the case of indoor operations, the hazard of the blast noise from a recoilless weapon increases due to limited indoor spaces. Also, the noise levels determine the operational feasibility of a weapon; therefore, it is important to predict the blast noise levels distribution in the indoor space in advance. In addition, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method generally used for fluid related simulations, requires high computing cost and time to simulate the whole domains. The domain includes both blast wave region and large and various indoor space region. Therefore, an efficient method for predicting the far-field noise level within a short time should be developed. This paper describes an analysis model for predicting the indoor noise distributions by considering the shape effect of the building within a short time. A new developed blast wave model was implemented using the noise source. Additionally, noise reflections at the closed surfaces such as walls and noise transmissions at the opened surfaces such as windows and doors were considered in calculating the noise levels. The predicted noise levels were compared with the experimental data obtained from the indoor launch test to validate the reliability of program.
Properties of slag cement that contained 50 wt% of blast furnace slag were studied when replaced blast furnace slag powder with electric arc furnace slag powder. Electric arc furnace slag was aged for about 2 months in the air by being crushed to be 1-3 mm in size. As a result of the experiment, it was proven that the water content for obtaining the same consistency became decreased as slag is replaced with electric arc furnace slag instead of blast furnace slag. Also, the workability of mortar increased about 30% at the same ratio of water to binder when blast furnace slag was completely replaced with electric arc furnace slag. The compressive strength of mortar on the 28 days increased when a slag replacement rate became 10 wt%, however, it rather decreased when the slag replacement rate exceeded 10 wt%. The heat of hydration became higher for the first 14 h in case of the replacement of slag cement by electric arc furnace slag. Yet, it decreased when 14 h had passed. Therefore, when all blast furnace slag was replaced with electric arc furnace slag, about 15 cal/g heat of hydration decreased when it passed about 72 h.
A possibility of using waste plastics as a source of secondary fuel in blast furnace has been of recent interest. The success of this process, however, will be critically dependent upon the optimization of operating systems. for instance, the supply of waste plastics must be reliable as well as economically attractive compared with conventional secondary fuels such as heavy oil, natural gas and pulverized coal. In this work, we put special importance on the improvement of the combustibility of waste plastics as a way to enhance energy efficiency in blast furnace. As experimental variables to approach this target, the effects of plastic particle size, blast temperature, and the level of oxygen enrichment were investigated using a custom-made blast model designed to simulate a real furnace. Lastly, the combustion efficiency of the mixture of waste plastics and pulverized coal was tested. The observations made from these experiments led us to the conclusion that with the increase of both blast temperature and the level of oxygen enrichment, and with the decrease of particle size, the combustibility of waste PE could be improved at a given distance from tuyere. Also it was found that the efficiency of coal combustion decreased with the addition of plastics; however, the combustion efficiency of mixture could be comparable at longer distance from tuyere.

An underground ammunition facility requires less quantity distances than the aboveground counterpart. However, chamber blast doors which resist the high blast-pressures are necessary for prevention of the consecutive explosions when an accident explosion occurs at any chamber. This paper aims to propose an procedure for calculation of the design loads for the chamber blast doors. Modeling considerations are drawn through analyzing the influences of the geometrical shapes and mechanical properties of rocks on the propagation of pressure wave along with the tunnels. Additionally, the design loads for the chamber blast doors in a newly-built underground ammunition facility are calculated based on the proposed procedure.
