Pneumothorax Induced by Pulmonary Paragonimiasis: Two Cases Report

  • When the juvenile worms of the genus Paragonimus migrate and cause defects on the surface of the visceral pleura, pneumothorax can develop. A 34-year-old woman was admitted for pneumothorax with which was developed after she ate raw fish and crab. A 21-year-old male soldier presented with recurrent bilateral pneumothorax without eosinophilia, caused after drinking stream water frequently. In both patients, paragonimiasis was suspected from the computed tomography scan and confirmed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test of the pleural fluid. When pneumothorax develops in patients who have ingested raw fresh-water crab or stream water, paragonimiasis should always be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Food Organisms of Juveniles of Chasmichthys dolichognaths Inhabited at Intertidal Zone of the Western Coast of Korea

  • To investigate the food organisms of the Chasmichthys dolichognathus during the juveniles stage, the stomach contents of fish, captured in the intertidal zone of Chungchongnam-do Sochon-gun Su-myon Dodun-ri between on early June from end of May 1998, were observed. Total length of the juveniles of C. dolichognathus was 6.5mm ∼10.0mm size, and the participation rate of feeding was 67.7%. Main food organisms were such as copepods, amphipods, shrimp larvae, polychaete larvae, and these occupied more than dry weight 2%. Copepods among them dominated the most quantitys by avergage 65.5%, and next, food organismsms appeared much by order of polychaete larvae and shrimp larvae etc. Therefore, most important food organisms of juvenile stage of C. dolichognathus were copepods, polychaete larvae, shrimp larvae etc.

  • The giant croaker, Nibea japonica is a large, estuarine sciaenid distributed around southem Korea and Japan. In Repubic of Korea, giant croaker is a highly desired commercial and recreational species and there is interest in develoment of techniques for production of fish for enhancement of wildstocks and aquaculture since the giant croaker possesses some desirable characteristics for aquaculture including tolerance to widely varying salinities and receptivity to induced spawning in captivity. Early Life History Characteristics of an Induced Hybrid of Rhodeus ocellatus and Acheilognathus yamatsutae (흰줄납줄개(Rhodeus ocellatus)와 줄납자루(Acheilognathus yamatsutae) 잡종의 초기생활사 특징)

  • This study was conducted to identify the taxonomic differences in the characteristics of Rhodeus ocellatus and Acheilognathus yamatsutae during their early life history via an interspecific hybridization experiment. Results showed that the hatching rates of the cross-bred eggs were 60% for cross OY (R. ocellatus ♀×A. yamatsutae ♂) and 70% for cross YO (A. yamatsutae ♀×R. ocellatus ♂). The dorsal fin rays of YO were similar to those of R. ocellatus. The hybridization test of A. yamatsutae and R. ocellatus living in the same water stream revealed that no interspecies reproductive isolation occurred. OY and YO showed similar maternal and paternal characteristic. The juvenile of OY did not resemble both paternal and maternal fin rays, indicating a difference. The hatching larvae of the hybrids showed the morphological characteristics of their parents but varied in terms of the shapes of their parts.

Accumulation, Elimination and Cell Response in the Kidney of Juvenile Rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) Exposed to Dietary Cadmium

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate Cd accumulation, elimination and cell response in juvenile rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) exposed to sub-chronic dietary Cd (0, 0.5, 5, 25 and 125 mg/kg) for 60 days and depuration periods of 30 days. Cd accumulation in the kidney of cock fish increased with exposure periods and concentrations for the 60 days of dietary Cd exposure. After the end of the dietary Cd exposure, Cd accumulation values in the kidney were $52.9{\pm}9.94\;{\mu}g/g$ and $90.6{\pm}15.7\;{\mu}g/g$ for those exposed to 25 mg/kg and 125 mg/kg Cd, respectively. The accumulation factors increased with the exposure period in the kidney. Cd elimination in the kidney of rockfish did not vary significantly and remained constant after the cessation of the dietary Cd exposure. In the primary exposure periods, the effect of kidney tissue in the rockfish exposed to dietary Cd was observed the swelling of capillary of the glomerulus. In addition, there was also hydropic swelling within the pyknotic nuclei, some of hyaline droplet accumulation and the microvilli showed a positive reaction to alcian blue in the tubular cells. While exposure time and concentrations were increased, there was a lot of hyaline droplet accumulation and the microvilli showed a positive reaction to alcian blue in the tubular cells. Fused renal tubule and its necrosis were observed after 60 days at l25 mg/kg.

Evaluation of Economical Feed Formulatio for Abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) (경제적인 참전복 배합사료 설계 및 평가)

  • This study was carrie out to develop practical feed formulation for juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai). Three replicate groups of abalone averaging 120mg were fed one of 7 isoproteic (34%) and isolipidic (5.3%) dlets containing various practical ingredients such as casein, fish meal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, Undaria powder, wheat flour, spirulina, starch, and/or wheat germ meal for 4 months. The prices (5,000~800 won/kg diet) of these experimental diets were adjusted by adding different levels and ratios of practival ingredients. In addition, these experimental diets were compared with commercial feed or natural food (Undaria). Weight gain, soft body weight and shell growth of abalone fed experimental diets with low prices (2,500~800 won/kg diet) and commercial diet were significantly higher than those of abalone fed experimental diet with high price (5,000 won/kg diet)and natural food (P<0.05). The results indicate that our economic formulation (about 1,000 won/kg diet) can be useful for juvenile abalone.

Osteological Development of the Larvae and Juvenile of Chameleon Goby, Tridentiger trigonocephalus (두줄망둑(Tridentiger trigonocephalus) 자치어의 골격발달)

  • This study was carried out to observe the development of the autonomous skeletal development of the Tridentiger trigonocephalus. Seven days after hatching, the skeleton of the two line cranes began to ossify at premaxillary, maxilla and dentary when the average total length was 4.44 mm (n=5). At thirteen days after hatching, the frontal, parietal, and epiotic ossicles were observed in the cranium when the average total length was 5.62 mm (n=5). At thirty-two days after hatching, actinost and post cleithrum were ossified at the shoulder when the average total length was 11.8 mm (n=5). At forty days after hatching, the lateral ethmoid of the skull was ossified with an average total length of 13.3 mm (n=5) and all skeletal development was completed.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Spirulina and Quercetin on Growth, Innate Immune Responses, Disease Resistance Against Edwardsiella tarda, and Dietary Antioxidant Capacity in the Juvenile Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus

  • A 10-week feeding trial was conducted to examine the effects of dietary spirulina and quercetin on growth, innate immunity, disease resistance and dietary antioxidant capacity in the juvenile olive flounder. Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight, $2.9{\pm}0.01g$) were fed one of isonitrogenous (48% crude protein) and isocaloric (17.4 MJ/kg DM) experimental diets containing 0% spirulina (as a control), 3.4% spirulina, or 6.8% spirulina with or without supplementation of 0.5% quercetin (designated as CON, SP3.4, SP6.8, and SP6.8 + Q, respectively) at a rate of 3% body mass twice daily. Higher dietary antioxidant capacity was found with spirulina supplementation, and the highest value (P < 0.05) was obtained with SP6.8 + Q diet. At the end of the feeding trial, no significant effects were observed on growth performance, body composition and disease resistance against Edwardsiella tarda. Lysozyme activity was significantly increased by spirulina supplementation (P < 0.05), and the highest value was observed in the group fed SP6.8 + Q diet. Also, significantly higher respiratory burst activity (P < 0.05) was found in SP3.4 group. According to the results of this study, dietary supplementation of 3.4% spirulina may enhance innate immunity of olive flounder.

Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Citrus By-product as a Vitamin C Replacement for Juvenile Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus at Low Water Temperatures (저수온기 치어기 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus) 사료 내 비타민 C 대체제로서 감귤착즙박의 이용 가능성 및 항생제 대체 효과)

  • This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation with citrus by-product (CBP) on the growth, feed utilization, innate immunity, and histology of the gills and intestine of juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus during low water temperature season. A vitamin C-free basal diet was regarded as a control and five other diets were formulated that contained 30 and 300 mg of L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (LAPP) or CBP as vitamin C equivalents/kg diet, or the antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) (designated as control, LAPP30, LAPP300, CBP30, CBP300, and OTC, respectively). Olive flounder (initial body weight $44.6{\pm}0.32g$) were fed the six experimental diets to apparent satiation for 9 weeks. Growth and feed utilization were significantly higher in CBP30 than in the control and LAPP groups. The lysozyme activity was significantly higher in CBP30 than in LAPP300. Enterocyte height was significantly higher in CBP30 than in the control. The number of goblet cells was increased significantly with LAPP30, LAPP300, and CBP30. These results demonstrate that CBP can reduce or replace vitamin C and antibiotic in the diet of olive flounder during the low-water-temperature season. The optimal CBP supplementation level seems to be approximately 1%, which is equivalent to 30 ppm vitamin C/kg in the fish diet.

The Changes of Digestive Enzyme Activity in Early Stages of the River Puffer, Takifugu obscurus (황복, Takifugu obscurus, 초기 단계의 소화효소 변화)

  • The digestive enzyme activities such as $\alpha-amylase$, trypsin and pepsin from the laboratory-reared river puffer Takifugu obscurus were measured from the time course of 1 day until the 65 day after hatching. In the case of $\alpha-amylase$, it was showed minimum activity of 0.0493 U/mg at the total length (TL) 10 mm, and showed maximum activity of 0.1480 U/mg at 19 mmTL. Trypsin and pepsin were showed their maximum activities of 0.0264, 0.0258 U/mg and 0.0178, 0.0201 U/mg when the total length of 16 and 24 mm, and represented remarkable correlations between the changes of enzyme activity and growth rate. The ontogenetic variations of digestive enzymes were represented clearly different patterns; i.e, the pepsin showed higher activity when the periods of larva ($4\~5\;mmTL$) and juvenile II ($19\~24\;mmTL$), however, the trypsin represented maximum activity at the stages of juvenile I ($11\~16\;mmTL$) and young fish (27 mmTL), respectively.
