Jury Evaluation Test for Annoyance Response of KTX(Korea Train Express) and Ordinary Train Noise (고속철도와 일반철도소음의 성가심 반응에 대한 청감실험 비교 연구)

  • In recent years, public complaints against railroad noise by KTX and Ordinary train have been rising. Regulation of railways noise uses same standard without distinguishing the type of railroad cars. According to the type of railroad cars, the frequency characteristics of emitting noise is different. Therefore it is requested to know how the public response vary to each types of railroad cars. The noise annoyance from three types of trains(KTX, electric train, diesel train) was analyzed by jury evaluation test for assessing the effect of frequency characteristics. The numerical results by a semantic differential method showed that annoyance response to three type of trains depended on the frequency characteristics. As a result, this study proposed that the KTX could have a bonus level of maximum 2.9 dB(A) compared to ordinary train.

Sound Quality Evaluation Based on the Mahalanobis Distance for the Interior Noise of Driving Vehicles with Various the Tire Type (타이어 종류에 따른 차량 실내 소음의 Mahalanobis Distance 를 이용한 음질인덱스 구축)

  • The reduction of vehicle interior noise has been the main interest of NVH engineers. The driver's perception of the vehicle noise is strongly affected by the psychoacoustic characteristics of the noise and the SPL. The existing methods to evaluate the SQ for vehicle interior noise are linear regression analysis of subjective SQ metrics by statistics and the estimation of subjective SQ values by neural network. However, these methods strongly depend on jury tests, this leads to difficulties. To reduce the important of the jury tests, we suggest a new method using the Mahalanobis distance for SQ evaluation. And, the optimal characteristic values that influenced the results of sound quality evaluation on the basis by main effect. Finally, we developed a new method based on the MD method to evaluate sound quality. The result of noise evaluation revealed that the sound quality could be well improved by changing the structural characteristics of the vehicle.

  • Generally, noise from a indoor air conditioner has been measured by overall sound pressure level, dB. Customers evaluation, however, of the noise from an air conditioners should not be depend on the only overall level but also the sensory feeling. Moreover, in this sensory evaluation, irregular, time-varying and uneven sounds which are difficult to describe itself by overall level are more affectable. Unfortunately however the formal evaluation method for this kinds of noise is not determined yet. In this research, the evaluation method for tonal noise, which is one of the unmeasurable sounds by overall level, is proposed to evaluate its acceptability based on the consumer's sense of hearing. To consider the consumer's sense, several times of Jury evaluation are carried out. The proposed approach could be applied to the other sound, which acoustical characteristics are similar to the tonal noise .

Psycho-acoustical analysis of program feature of Symphonie Fantastique using Zwicker's sound quality parameters (쯔비커의 음질 파라메터를 이용한 환상교향곡 표제성의 심리음향학적 분석)

  • The goal of the present paper is to objectify the intrinsic subjectivity of sound as a media of music by applying psycho-acoustical methodology to the analysis of a musical work. First, 18 sound samples are extracted from "Symponie Fantastique" written by Hector Berlioz, which is a piece of program music, and then the objective Zwicher's sound quality parameters such as: Loudness, Sharpness, Roughness and Fluctuation Strength are evaluated for each of these sound samples. For subjective sound quality evaluation, 9 representative sound quality adjectives are extracted on a basis of program feature of Symponie Fantastique and the first jury test is carried out by using the numeric rating method and the paired comparison method. Three sound quality adjectives, "bright", "noisy", and "realistic" are extracted from the factor analysis of the first jury test result. On a basis of the computed sound metrics and the second jury test result for the three sound quality adjectives, three sound quality indexes are developed to represent the sound qualities of "Symponie Fantastique".

Design of Sound Quality Index for Laser Printers and Its Application for Improvement Study (프린터의 음질 인덱스 제작과 음질개선에 대한 응용)

  • The sound quality based on design optimization, throughout the development process of various electronic office equipments, needs to be considered in order to respond the increased needs for the emotional satisfaction of customers in terms of psycho-acoustics. This paper focuses on how to describe the characteristics of operating sound radiated from laser printers by using various sound attributes, and to model the sound quality index that can properly evaluate the subjective preference on modification conditions in the improvement study quantitatively. Especially, the proposed verification process, in the form of combining the correlation based method and the decision error based method, was applied to improve the generality and reliability of a group of participants in the jury evaluation. The modified Aures tonality model was also proposed to improve the correlation coefficient with the mean response of participants by optimizing some parameters. As a result, the loudness, articulation index, roughness, tonality, fluctuation strength were used to model the sound quality index for laser printers by using the multiple-linear regression method. Through the improvement study, it was confirmed that replacing the absorbing materials is effective to reduce the tonalness radiated from the side of a reference printer model. Based on above results, it can be concluded that the proposed model has enough usefulness as quantitative evaluation index to evaluate the difference between modification conditions in the improvement study.

  • Among the various elements affecting a customer's evaluation of automobile quality, buzz, squeak and rattle(BSR) have been considered to be major factors. In most vehicle manufacturers, the BSR problems are solved by find-fix method with the vehicle road test, mainly due to various excitation sources, complex generation mechanism and subjective response. To systematically tackle the BSR problems in early stage of the vehicle development cycle, these difficulties should be resolved. The aim of the present paper is to characterize the sound quality property of BSR noise that can be used to assess the subjective responses to BSR. The four sound metrics from Zwicker's sound quality parameter are computed for the signals recorded for eight BSR noise source regions localized by using the acoustic-field visualized results. Then, the jury test of BSR noise are performed. On the basis of the computed sound metrics and jury test result is evaluated to represent the harshness of BSR noise. It is expected that the developed BSR measuring system and sound quality properties can be used to reduce the automotive interior BSR noise in terms of subjective levels as well as objective levels.

  • Muffler sound quality of a vehicle has widely been evaluated using commercial softwares. However, the commercial softwares are providing only simple sound quality index. To get better sound quality evaluation method of the muffler, a new approach is suggested based on the subjective sound quality test. The suggested subjective sound quality evaluation method is refined with the fuzzy theory. The developed method is applied for the evaluation of various kinds of vehicle muffler sounds.

  • Until now, product mostly has revealed physical quantities created by the standpoint of engineers. Consumers, however, perceive and evaluate products on the non-physical characteristics, such as feelings, emotions, and experiences in different social and cultural situations. Especially, for the household appliances such as a refrigerator, the sound is heavily related to the satisfaction of a customer who is a real user of the product and is very important factor to decide purchasing as well as visual design. Therefore, in this research, not only the simple sound pressure level but also the consumer's sense of hearing evaluate the noise from the refrigerator. And also, in order to improve the quality of sound through the design change, the consumer's evaluation is analyzed and related to the engineering quantities.

Design of Decision Error Model for Reliability of Sound Quality Analysis and Its Experimental Verification (프린터 음질평가의 신뢰성을 위한 결정오차 모델설계 및 실험적 검증)

  • In this study, the possibility of decision error is investigated to identify and improve the reliability of participants in the process of conducting the sound quality analysis for laser printers. So far, there is not a way to identify and express the possibility of individual participant quantitatively. Thus, the decision error model is proposed which is based on the expectation value between the perceived sounds. Through the experimental verification on the laser printers, it was found that the possibility of decision error is affected according to the normalized difference. The possibility of decision error has inversely proportional to the normalized difference between the perceived sounds. When the normalized difference becomes small value, the uncertainly between decisions is inversely increase, and then it is difficult to obtain the proper result in the process of the jury evaluation for laser printers. For this reason, in this study, the proposed decision error model is added in the previous step of the correlation verification. Comparing to the conventional process only using the correlation based method, after the reliability of each participant is verified, the correlation with the mean response of participants is verified. It was found that the participants who were recognized as having unusual preferences are actually identified as having the reliability problem. Based on the results of this study, the proposed decision error model will be helpful to identify and improve the reliability of participants in the following study for the sound quality analysis.

The Preference Study of Vehicle Warning Sound Considering the Sale Region and Personal Preference based on Psychoacoustics (심리음향 기반 판매 지역 및 개인별 성향을 고려한 차량 경고음의 선호도 연구)

  • The vehicle's waning sounds are used for the purpose of informing the specific situation to the driver. In the past, the warning sounds were developed in terms of a simple notification. With the increasing importance of the emotional quality of vehicle, the research in terms of sound quality has been actively conducted. The desired sounds are dependent upon customer expectation and usage requirements. And it based on cultural or regional difference and personal preference. In this paper, the preference study considering the sale region and personal preference is introduced. Jury test for subjective evaluation are carried out and the difference in preference is analyzed.
