This paper is results of experimental and nunerical works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Numerical analysis with the commercially available program of FLAC were performed to compare with results of centrifuge model experiment In numerical modelling. Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic constitutive model was used to simulaye the behavoor of Jumunjin Standard Sand and the interface element between the lining and the covered material was implemented to simulate the interaction between them. Compared results between model tests and numerical estimation with respect to displacement of the lining showed in good agreements.
The feeding habits of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus were studied by analyzing the stomach contents of 423 specimens caught by coastal gill net in the coastal waters off Jumunjin, Gangwondo, Korea, from January to December, 2011. The size of Pacific cod ranged from 31.0 to 86.5cm in total length (TL). The proportion of empty stomachs was 25.1%. The main prey items were Macrura, Pisces, and Cephalopoda. In order of abundance, the most dominant species of Macrura, were Pandalus eous, Argis lar, and Neocrangon communis, and the most dominant species of Pisces, were Clupea pallasii, Actoscopus japonicus, and Glyptocephalus stelleri. Berryteuthis magister was the most dominant species of Cephalopoda. In terms of variation in feeding habits by growth, Macrura was the most important prey group for G. macrocephalus ranging in TL from 30- to 55 cm, but Pisces was the most important prey group for cod over 56 cm TL. Catch of G. macrocephalus was significantly positively correlated to catch of the three major Pisces prey species Clupea pallasii, Actoscopus japonicus and Glyptocephalus stelleri.

Rover wheel's mobility depends on soil's condition and wheel's design. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of soil conditions, which are Jumunjin sand and Korean lunar soil simulant (KLS-1), on wheel's motion performance. The experiments were performed by using a single wheel testbed with a wheel which grouser height is 15mm on Jumunjin sand and KLS-1, respectively. Also the influence of grouser length to wheel's mobility performance was studied. The experimental results of torque, drawbar pull and sinkage relating to slip ratio were discussed and analyzed to evaluate wheel's motion performance. Results showed wheel moving on KLS-1 has high performance than Jumunjin sand. Wheel's mobility performance was influenced by soil's properties of cohesion and frictional angle. In addition, wheel's performance of drawbar pull and Torque increased with the increasing of grouser length.
Residual shear strength is an important parameter in landslide dynamics and may be considered the critical factor in landslide triggering. Tests were undertaken using Jumunjin sands to examine the effects of smooth and rough surfaces on ring-shear characteristics. Under dense and drained conditions, shear velocities were recorded as 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 50, 100 mm s-1, with shear strength increasing with velocity and producing increasingly fine content. Particle fragmentation may thus increase landslide mobilization when the landslide body is mixed with ambient water in channelized flows.

It was analysed that spatial and temporal change patterns of general water quality constituents were measured monthly from 2002 to 2005 in Jumunjin Harbour. The measured constituents are temperature, salinity, pH, SS and DO. Concentration difference of upper lower layer for general water quality constituents was small. Temperature and DO concentration show the clear difference at temporal concentration change pattern, but SS, pH and salinity have irregular change pattern. Also, water quality improvement effect of seawater exchange facilities and sewage treatment plants is analysed quantitatively using averaged spatial and temporal data set. From this result, it is found that effect of sewage treatment plants is small and seawater exchange facilities at zone 1 and 2 is clear concentration reduction effect to be about 26% and 16%, respectively. After sewage treatment plants operation, DO concentration reduced about 10% at inner zone of Jumunjin Harbour, the other side, after seawater exchange facilities concentration DO concentration increased about 10%. DO concentration at 2005 estimated little than that of 2002, it is concluded that a yearly change of DO concentration has about 10%.

A series of column test with a silty marine soil mixed with Jumunjin Standard Sand were performed to investigate the characteristics of settling and consolidation of non-plastic dredged soils. Column tests were carried out by using the separable column to measure the grain size distribution of consolidated layer. Column tests were performed with changing the mixing ratio of Jumunjin Standard Sand to the silty marine soil, initial water content of slurry and initial height of slurry. Height of interface of slurry was monitored during tests and grain size distribution tests were carried out after finishing tests. Influencing factors on the particle segregation, eventually to the characteristics of settling and consolidation of non-plastic soil, were analyzed on the thesis of test results. As results of column tests, the mixing ratio of sand to the silty marine soil and the initial water content of slurry were known to affect the characteristics of settling and consolidation resulted in significant particle segregation of slurry. Initial height of slurry was found not to affect seriously to particle segregation.
Being mostly made up of highly permeable basalt and volcanic ash soil, Jeju Island's lithosphere characterizes its streams to be dry, flowing only when precipitation is happening. Under this condition, this research was motivated to identify the need of conservation of underground water, which is taking up most of (84% of) Jeju's water usage, and made an attempt to reduce the permeability of stream beds so that it can replace underground water and be used instead. To this end, this study suggested a simple method to make dry streams to carry water all-year-round by reducing permeability of stream floor. The experiment of permeability was performed on the porous basalt and compared it with that of same basalt with volcanic ash soil and Jumunjin sand layer added on top. The results showed a dramatic decrease in permeability of water when both volcanic ash soil and Jumunjin sand is were layered on top of porous basalt. Despite being gained in a controlled environment with a simple test, this result may provide a realistic and effective method of preserving Jeju Island's underground water which ultimately is a method of resolving water related issues.
Antifreeze proteins and glycoproteins [AF(G)Ps] constitute a group of proteins that lower the freezing but not the melting points of aqueous solutions, enabling polar and north-temperate fish to survive in ice-laden environments. However, little is known about antifreeze activity in temperate fish; such work would extend our knowledge on the functions and evolution of AF(G)Ps. In the present study, we screened for antifreeze activity in temperate fish caught off the coast of Jumunjin ($37.89^{\circ}N$), Gangneung, Korea. Thermal hysteresis (TH) and the ability to inhibit ice recrystallization (IR) in blood, liver, and muscle samples from nine fish were examined to assess antifreeze activity. As the East Sea off the coast of Jumunjin is ice-free year round, we thought it most unlikely that the fish would express antifreeze proteins. Surprisingly, the blood of Pleurogrammus azonus and three types of tissue from Gymnocanthus herzensteini, Zoarces gilli and Kareius bicoloratus exhibited measurable TH values together with the ability to trigger characteristic morphological changes in ice crystals. Blood samples from the three species also evidenced ice recrystallization (IR) inhibition. This implies that AF(G)Ps or other antifreeze-like substances are present in temperate fish even under nonfreezing conditions. These results contribute to our understanding of the functions and origins of antifreeze activity in fish.
