  • This research aims to present the ego-centered topic citation analysis, which is a new application of White's ego-centered citation analysis, for analyzing multilayered knowledge structure of a subject domain. An experimental topic citation analysis was carried out on the folksonomy research documents retrieved from Web of Science. Ego-centered topic citation analyses on folksonomy research domain were conducted in three stages: ego-documents set analysis, topic citation identity analysis, and topic citation image analysis. The results showed that the ego-centered topic citation analysis suggested in this study was successfully performed to illustrate the inner and the outer knowledge structures of folksonomy research domain.

  • A citation analysis utilizes the relations among citations and is the most popular bibliometric method. This analysis is based on 1) the evaluation by paper, journal and researcher of the research output, 2) the identification of emerging research topics, 3) the production of a map of the intellectual structure of the research domain and 4) various services for academic information. However, this approach has a limitation in that a citation is treated in a very simple manner, even though the purpose of citation can vary greatly. To address this problem, new approaches have been studied that take into account the citation context. This research separates the citations according to the citation functions and tries to conduct an analysis according to the newly classified citations. Furthermore, research on the citation summarization and visualization based on both the citation context and the citation function of the citations was also attempted. However, since there are very few studies related to citation context in South Korea, more research and development is needed in this area. This study analyzes the status of the research in terms of the citation context. For this, we utilized social network analysis methods.

  • Ciatation analysis is a information analysis method based on the phenomenon of citing previous documents in the source document. There are many well-known studies exploring citation analysis and it applications. This paper does not attempt to review this extensive area of applications, but to demonstrate the sociological aspect of citation analysis. Specifically, this paper have reviewed the citation analysis as a quantitative method for the studies of sociology of knowledge. For this, I have described various basic methods such as citation behavior, citation count, impact factor, citation relationship etc. And I have classified into four applied areas of sociology of knowledge; (1) flow of knowledge resources, (2) evaluation of knowledge resources, (3) evaluation of knowledge community, and (4) utilization in terms of knowledge policy. Finally, I have clarified the some limitations and shortcomings of citation analysis that have addressed by citation and citation analysis itself.

  • This research uses a new approach to analyze the extent of influence journal papers have on the progress of varied research fields by estimation of subject-based influence on research other than impact factor that relies on citation index. It is initiated with the hypothesis that earlier established citation relations between journal and citing paper, which reveals the research field that contains the highest citation index and hence has received the greatest contribution from a particular journal, would have inconsistent contribution to the research field over the year of journal publication. The target research is primarily 128 journal papers and 4,123 citing papers from Information Systems Research published in the years 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010. The characteristics of citation history and hallmarks of research field of citing papers were studied and analysis on significant distinction between citing fields based on the year of publication was performed. The analysis results show the order of citation rate to be highest from Computer Science (2,221 cases), Business & Economics (2,191 cases), and Information Science & Library Science (1,901 cases). The citation history of the journal, nonetheless, indicates increase in citation during 2-3 years after the earliest publication till it achieves constant citation. The statistical analysis shows significant variation in citing fields in accordance with the publication year; especially in 2010, journal contribution has increased in the fields of Business & Economics, Operations Research & Management Science, and Health Care Sciences & Services but, however, is reduced in Education & Educational Research and Social Sciences - Other Topics.

  • The analysis of citing and cited phrases provides an opportunity to enhance search-centric academic information services. However, most current studies focus only on citation analysis among academic associations, researchers, and articles, making it challenging to develop higher citation-based information services. This study proposes citation analysis service methods using citing and cited phrases. First, to verify the feasibility of suggested services, we have collected the most highly cited articles with specific domain terms and followed their citing relationship; after that, we found formal citation types and ratios in the original articles. And we conducted structural analysis, especially with three topics, "Deep Learning," "Green Energy," and "Aging," and then structurally illustrates the citation characteristics of related articles. Finally, we collected four most cited articles and all their citing ones for each subject from Google Scholar and analyzed the ratio of citation types and citation spread. We hope that various citation analysis studies and information services can be further developed based on our discussion for designing better information services.

  • The purposes of this study were to identify core journals for pharmaceutical researches in Korea and to examine the research domains of Korean pharmaceutical researchers. Journal citation frequency analysis and journal co-citation analysis were performed on the research papers of Korean pharmaceutical researchers. Korean researchers' citation data were gathered from SCOPUS for foreign journals and KSCD for domestic journals. 116 core journals were identified through citation frequency analysis and journal relationships were suggested as a pathfinder network of journals. Factor analysis on journal correlation matrix resulted in 18 subject domains and related journal lists were also given.

  • The academic research performance is often quantitatively measured by means of using citation frequency. The citation frequency-based indicators, such as h-index and impact factor, are commonly used reflecting the citation quality to some extent. However, these frequency-based indicators are usually carried out based on the assumption that all citations are equal. This may lead to biased evaluations in that, the attributes of the citing objects and cited objects are significant. A high-accuracy evaluation method is needed. In this paper, we review various citation quality-based evaluation indicators, and categorize them considering the algorithms being applied. We discuss the pros and cons of these indicators, and compare them from four dimensions. The outcomes will be useful for our further research on distinguishing citation quality.

  • Despite the widespread use, critics claim that citation analysis has serious limitations in evaluating the research performance of scholars. First, conventional citation analysis methods yield one-dimensional and sometimes misleading evaluation as a result of not taking into account differences in citation quality, not filtering out citation noise such as self-citations, and not considering non-numeric aspects of citations such as language, culture, and time. Second, the citation database coverage of today is disjoint and incomplete, which can result in conflicting quality assessment outcomes across different data sources. This paper discuss the findings from a citation analysis study that measured the impact of scholarly publications based on the data mined from Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, and briefly describes a work-in-progress prototype system called CiteSearch, which is designed to overcome the weaknesses of existing citation analysis methods with a robust citation-based quality assessment approach.

  • This paper focuses on the critique of citation analysis and then attempts to prospect for the future. The development of citation analysis has been marked by the invention of new techniques and measures, the exploitation of new tools, and the needs of evaluation of scientific research. Normative theory takes the lead in this development. But critics have questioned both the assumptions and methods of citation analysis. This critics are based on the microsociological perspective.

  • Recently, deep learning has been rapidly spreading as an innovative machine learning technique in various domains. This study explored the research trends of deep learning via modified ego centered topic citation analysis. To do that, a few seed documents were selected from among the retrieved documents with the keyword 'deep learning' from Web of Science, and the related documents were obtained through citation relations. Those papers citing seed documents were set as ego documents reflecting current research in the field of deep learning. Preliminary studies cited frequently in the ego documents were set as the citation identity documents that represents the specific themes in the field of deep learning. For ego documents which are the result of current research activities, some quantitative analysis methods including co-authorship network analysis were performed to identify major countries and research institutes. For the citation identity documents, co-citation analysis was conducted, and key literatures and key research themes were identified by investigating the citation image keywords, which are major keywords those citing the citation identity document clusters. Finally, we proposed and measured the citation growth index which reflects the growth trend of the citation influence on a specific topic, and showed the changes in the leading research themes in the field of deep learning.
