  • Carbon fiber epoxy composite materials are widely used in the structures of aircrafts, robots and other machines because of their high specific stiffness, high specific strength and damping. In order for the composite materials to be used in the robot structure or machine element, bearing mounting and joining surfaces must be provided, which require accurate machining. In this paper, the machinability and tool wear characteristics of the milling operation of the carbon fiber epoxy composite materials were experimentally measured. The tool wear mechanism and the Taylor tool wear constants were determined. Also, the surface roughness of milling operation was measured w.r.t. cutting speed and feed.

  • High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray coating of WC-metal powder (powder) was carried out to improve the resistances of friction, wear and corrosion of magnetic bearing shaft material Inconel718 (In718) of turbo blower. A micron sized WC-metal powder (86.5% WC, 9.5% Co 4% Cr) was coated onto In718 surface using HVOF thermal spraying. During the spraying, the binder metals and alloy such as Co, Cr and Co-Cr alloy were molten and a small portion of WC particles were partially decomposed to $W_2C$ and free carbon at above its decomposition temperature of $1250^{\circ}C$. The free carbon and excessively sprayed oxygen formed carbon oxide gases, resulting a porous coating of porosity of $2.2{\pm}0.3%$. The surface hardness of substrate increased approximately three times from 400 Hv of In718 to $1260{\pm}30Hv$ of the coating The friction coefficients of the coating were approximately $0.33{\pm}0.03$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $0.26{\pm}0.03$ at $450^{\circ}C$. These values were smaller than those of In718 substrate at both temperatures due to the lubrication from the free carbon and the cobalt oxide debris. The corrosion resistance of the coating was higher than that of In718 both in salt water of 3.5% NaCl and acid of 1 M HCl solutions, on the contrary, it was lower in base solution of 1 M NaOH. According to this study, the HVOF WC-metal powder coating is recommended for the durability improvement of magnetic bearing shaft of turbo blower.

  • Automotive wheel bearing grease helps to reduce stresses and prevent wear of wheel bearings. But it is easily contaminated by water and other contaminants. In this study, we investigated the property change of automotive wheel bearing grease under water contamination. The result showed that some properties such as dropping point, work penetration and oxidation stability were not influenced by water content. However, most of properties such as work stability, water washout characteristics, leakage tendency, oil separation, evaporation loss and rust protection became worse after water was added. This is thought that added water makes the interaction weak between thickener and base oil of grease.

  • In the last decade, laser surface texturing (LST) has emerged as a viable option of surface engineering. Many problems related with mechanical components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals and piston rings, etc, LST result in significant improvement in load capacity, wear resistance and reduction in friction force. It is mainly experimentally reported the micro-dimpled bearing surfaces can reduce friction force, however, precise theoretical results are not presented until now. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code, FLUENT is used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a parallel thrust bearing having 3-dimensional micro-dimple. The results show that the pressure, velocity and density distributions are highly affected by the location and number of dimple. The numerical method and results can be use in design of optimum dimple characteristics, and further researches are required.

  • In this study, we investigated the tribology behaviour of two different bearing materials. One of these alloys content is Cu(90)-Sn(10) alloy and is widely used in the automotive industry. The other is Al alloy. This bearing content is Al-Sn-Si-Cu. Therefore, it is required to study on the lublicating characteristics of bearing according to different materials. In this study, compressor bearings made by respectively "PTFE solid lubricant" and "AI alloy with superior load carrying capacity, rubbing and impact endurance", have gone through journal bearing test. Lubrication and abrasion characteristics are evaluated by analyzing the material characteristics of a scroll compressor bearing bush. The AI alloy bearing showed the most excellent lubrication and abrasion characteristics than Cu-Sn alloy under high load condition.

  • Most of rotating machineries supported by contact bearing accompany lowering efficiency, vibration and wear. Moreover, because of vibration, which is occurred in rotating shaft, they have the limits of driving speed and precision. The rotor system has parametric variations or external disturbances such as mass unbalance variations in long operation. Therefore, it is necessary to research about magnetic bearing, which is able to support the shaft without mechanical contact and to control rotor vibration without being affected by external disturbances or parametric changes. Magnetic bearing system in the paper is composed of position sensor, digital controller, actuating amplifier and electromagnet. This paper applied the robust control method using quantitative feedback theory (QFT) to control the magnetic bearing. It also proposed design skill of optimal controller, in case the system has structured uncertainty, unstructured uncertainty and disturbance. Reduction of vibration is verified at critical rotating speed even external disturbance exists. Unbalance response, a serious problem in rotating machinery, is improved by magnetic bearing using QFT algorithm.

  • Effects of sliding speed, applied load, and thickness of PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate) coating layers on their dry sliding frictional and wear behavior were investigated. Sliding wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The PMMA layer was coated on Si wafer by a spin coating process with two different thicknesses, $1.5\mu\textrm{m}$ and $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$. AISI 52100 bearing steel balls were used as a counterpart of the PMMA coating during the wear. Normal applied load and sliding speed were varied. Wear mechanisms of the coatings were investigated by examining worn surfaces using an SEM. Friction coefficient of the coatings decreased with the increase of the applied load. Both adhesion and deformation of the coating determined the coefficient. The thicker PMMA layer with the thickness of $1.5mutextrm{m}$ showed lower friction coefficient than the thinner layer under most test conditions. Effects of sliding speed and applied load on the frictional behavior were varied depending on the thickness of the coating layer.

  • The signal pattern recognition method by acoustic emission signal is applied to detect and classify the defects of a journal bearing in a power plant. AE signals of main defects such as overheating, wear and corrosion are obtained from a small scale model. To detect and classify the defects, AE signal pattern recognition program is developed. As the classification methods, the wavelet transformation analysis, the frequency domain analysis and time domain analysis are used. Among three analyses, the wavelet transformation analysis is most effective to detect and classify the defects of the journal bearing..

  • The friction and wear behaviors of magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ films were investigated through the use of a pin and disk type tester. The experiments were performed for two kinds of specimens (ground (Ra 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and polished (Ra 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$) substrates) under the following operating condifions : linear sliding velocities in the range of 22~66 mm/s (3 types), normal loads varying from 9.8~29.4 N(3 types) and atmospheric conditions of air, medium and high vacuum (3types). Silicon nitride pin was used as the lower specimen and magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ on bearing steel disk was used as the upper specimen. The results showed that low friction property of the MoS$_2$ films could be identified in high vacuum and the specific wear rate in air was much higher than that in medium and high vacuum due to severe oxidation. It was found that the main wear mechanism in air was oxidation whereas in high vacuum accumulation of plastic flow and adhesion, were the main causes of wear.
