  • In this paper, we propose an efficient dynamic workload balancing strategy which improves the performance of high-performance computing system. The key idea of this dynamic workload balancing strategy is to minimize execution time of each job and to maximize the system throughput by effectively using system resource such as CPU, memory. Also, this strategy dynamically allocates job by considering demanded memory size of executing job and workload status of each node. If an overload node occurs due to allocated job, the proposed scheme migrates job, executing in overload nodes, to another free nodes and reduces the waiting time and execution time of job by balancing workload of each node. Through simulation, we show that the proposed dynamic workload balancing strategy based on CPU, memory improves the performance of high-performance computing system compared to previous strategies.

  • Grid computing is widely applicable to various fields of industry including process control and manufacturing, military command and control, transportation management, and so on. In a viewpoint of application area, grid computing can be classified to three aspects that are computational grid, data grid and access grid. This paper focuses on computational grid which handles complex and large-scale computing problems. Computational grid is characterized by system dynamics which handles a variety of processors and jobs on continuous time. To solve problems of system complexity and reliability due to complex system dynamics, computational grid needs scheduling policies that allocate various jobs to proper processors and decide processing orders of allocated jobs. This paper proposes a service prediction-based job scheduling model and present its scheduling algorithm that is applicable for computational grid. The service prediction-based job scheduling model can minimize overall system execution time since the model predicts the next processing time of each processing component and distributes a job to a processing component with minimum processing time. This paper implements the job scheduling model on the DEVS modeling and simulation environment and evaluates its efficiency and reliability. Empirical results, which are compared to conventional scheduling policies, show the usefulness of service prediction-based job scheduling.

  • There are two targets to schedule parallel jobs in the Cloud: (1) scheduling the jobs as many as possible, and (2) reducing the average execution time of the jobs. Most of previous work mainly focuses on the computing speed of resources without considering other attributes, such as bandwidth, memory and so on. Especially, past work does not consider the supply-demand condition from those attributes. Resources have different attributes, considering those attributes together makes the scheduling problem more difficult. This is the problem that we try to solve in this paper. First of all, we propose a new parallel job scheduling method based on a classification method of resources from different attributes, and then a scheduling method-CPLMT (Cloud parallel scheduling based on the lists of multiple attributes) is proposed for the parallel tasks. The classification method categories resources into different kinds according to the number of resources that satisfy the job from different attributes of the resource, such as the speed of the resource, memory and so on. Different kinds have different priorities in the scheduling. For the job that belongs to the same kinds, we propose CPLMT to schedule those jobs. Comparisons between our method, FIFO (First in first out), ASJS (Adaptive Scoring Job Scheduling), Fair and CMMS (Cloud-Minmin) are executed under different environments. The simulation results show that our proposed CPLMT not only reduces the number of unfinished jobs, but also reduces the average execution time.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic job relocation strategy that considering application's characteristics in multiple grid sites. This scheme classifies application to execute in multiple grid sites by their characteristics : computing intensive application, network intensive application. Also, it eliminates the communication between sites by allocating the network intensive application in single site, thus reducing the total job execution time. But if a number of free nodes to execute the network intensive application aren't found in single site, the proposed scheme the first allocates the network intensive application in multiple sites to minimize network latency. Then if the network intensive application being executed in multiple sites suitable free nodes are found in single site. the proposed scheme relocates the application being executed in multiple sites to another single site. This results in reducing the total job execution time. Through simulation, we show that the proposed dynamic job reallocation strategy improves the performance of Data Grid environment compared with previous strategies.

  • Grid computing is a service that share geographically distributed computing resources through high speed network. In this paper, we propose hybrid scheduling scheme which considers not only meta-scheduling scheme to distribute the job between the nodes of grid computing system but also the job scheduling to distribute the job within the local nodes. According to the number of processors needed and expected execution time, the job with high priority is allocated to job queue while the one with low priority and remote job are allocated to backfill queue. We evaluate the proposing scheme through the various experiments and the results show that the utilization of grid computing system increases and the job slowdown decreases.

  • In parallel job scheduling, each job can be executed simultaneously on multiple machines at a time. Thus in the input instance, a job $J_i$ requires the number $m_i$ of machines on which it shall be processed. The algorithm should determine not only the execution order of jobs but also the machines on which the jobs are executed. In this paper, when the jobs have deadlines, the problem is to maximize the total work of jobs which is completed by their deadlines. The problem is known to be strongly NP-hard [5] and we investigate the approximation algorithms for the problem. We consider a model in which the algorithm can have more machines than the adversary. With this advantage, the problem is how good solution the algorithm can produce against the optimal algorithm.

  • This paper introduces a case study for efficient generation of production schedules in a tube manufacturing system. The considered scheduling problem consists of two sub problems : lot sizing for a job and Job sequencing. Since these problems require simulation optimization in which the performance measures are obtained by simulation execution, the trade-off between solution quality and computation time is an important issue. In this study, the optimal lot size for every product type is determined from simulation experiments. Then, target production quantity for each product type is transformed to several jobs such that a Job consists of determined lot size. To obtain the good solution for a Job sequence in a reasonable time, a number of alternatives are generated from heuristic rules developed by intuition and analysis of the considered system, and a job sequence is selected from simulation experiments.

  • This paper describes a new approach for the operating system level power management to reduce the energy consumed in the IO devices in a robot platform, which provides various functions such as navigation, multimedia application, and wireless communication. The policy proposed in the paper, which was named the Energy-Aware Job Schedule (EAJS), rearranges the jobs scattered so that the idle periods of the devices are clustered into a time period and the devices are shut down during their idle period. The EAJS selects a schedule that consumes the minimum energyamong the schedules that satisfy the buffer and time constraints. Note that the burst job execution needs a larger memory buffer and causes a longer time delay from generating the job request until to finishing it. A prototype of the EAJS is implemented on the Linux kernel that manages the robot system. The experiment results show that a maximum $44\%$ power saving on a DSP and a wireless LAN card can be obtained with the EAJS.

  • Java native method is proposed for the efficient execution of time-critical code, running of platform dependent job, and reuse of established libraries. If the writing of the Java native method is the speedup of execution time, you must use a compiled language not java language to write native method. Also, you must know the usage of the Java native interface to use native method. To reduce these difficulties, we proposed java native method generator that changes java method into native method automatically. Also, NMG helps programmer to write C implementation for the native method because there Is no need for the concept of JNI.
