  • Background: Currently, evidence-based medicine is widely propagated as a reference for proper clinical practice. As a result, there is an increasing need for more clinical trials based on Oriental diagnostic methods to evaluate the efficacy of Oriental medicine, including acupuncture and herbal medicine. The purpose of this study was to confirm which symptoms are adequate indicators of effects of Ojeock-san for lower back pain and develop a questionnaire to evaluate its effects. Methods: We interviewed 102 Oriental medical doctors working in Seoul with a preformed questionnaire which included questions about symptoms of lower back pain and indicators for Ojeock-san. We sampled respondents who answered that they trust the effectiveness of Ojeock-san in telephone survey carried out using multistage stratified random sampling technique from March to April, 2009. We categorized the respondents into two groups, differentiating them by gender, career, workplace, and trust level of Ojeock-san effect. Results: About half of the respondents selected 13 questions as the adequate indicators of Ojeock-san for low back pain. There were no differences in the top 11 selected indicators in total selection and top 3 ranking selection. The comparison of frequency of top 13 questions in total selections between the two groups showed no difference. Conclusions: There were 13 symptoms which were considered adequate indicators of effects of Ojeock-san for lower back pain found by many Oriental medical doctors. This questionnaire can be utilized as a diagnostic adjunctive tool, tested for validity and reliability of questionnaires through further studies.

  • Mechanical and morphological properties of poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends containing compatibilizers were investigated. Poly(styrene-acrylonitrile)-g-maleic anhydride) (SAN-g-MAH), poly(ethylene-co-octene) rubber-maleic anhydride (EOR-MAH) and poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (EGMA) were used as compatibilizers. Mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strengths of ABS/PLA (80/20, wt%) blends were found to be increased when the SAN-g-MAH, EOR-MAH and EGMA were used. The maximum values for mechanical properties of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blend were observed when SAN-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer at the concentration of 3 phr. From morphological studies of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blends, PLA droplet size was decreased by the addition of the compatibilizers used in this study. From the results of mechanical and morphological properties of the ABS/PLA (80/20) blends, SAN-g-MAH (3 phr) was found to be the most effective compatibilizer among the compatibilizers used in this study.

  • According to <> and <>, Taeum is strongly related to dampness, earth, and canter. The origin of Taeum is dampness and the presentation of it is dryness, thus spleen plays a greater role than lung in physiologic and pathologic aspect. Taeum meridian cooperates with Soeum and Guelum meridian, and spreads yin gi through spleen and lung meridian. Among six meridian types that are invented by Ji-San, Taeum type possesses lowered eyes and nose and displays characteristics of Taeum disease. Instead of five jang organs and six bu orqans, meridians are major factor of Taeum type. Thus SiDongByung (disease of gi) and SoSaengByung (disease of blood) are considered more significantly than internal and external symptoms of organs. Personality of Taeum type is realistic, pragmatic, diligent, and occasionally selfish. Medications for Taeum type are described as following. GwakHyangJungKi-San or InSamYangWi-Tang can be considered for the complication of intrinsic and extrinsic diseases, which are caused by yin symptom of SangHan. If cold stomach affected by Taeum disease causes an abdominal pain and diarrhea, YiJoong-Tang or PalMiYiJoong-Tang are suggested.

  • Research was conducted on vinegar types and characteristics with reference to representative literature such as SanGaYoRok, SikRyoChanYo, SooEunJabBang, GoSaChalYo, DongEuiBoGam, SaSiChanYoCho, JuBangMoon, ShinGanGuWhang, ChalYoSeo, EumSikDiMiBang, YoRok, ChiSengYoRam, SanRimKyoungJae,EumSikBo,OnJuBeop, SulManDeuNunBeop, KyuHapChongSeo, ImWonSipYukJi, JungIlDangJabJi, SulBitNeunBeop, SiUiJeonSeo, and BuInPilJi from the 15th to the 19th centuries of the Joseon Dynasty. Based on this research, a classification of materials used in vinegar, knowledge on treatment, preparation of ingredients, capturing flavor, storage of vinegar, as well as the favorable days that vinegar can be manufactured were studied and analyzed based on the different aspect of vinegar. Vinegar is a wellknown condiment throughout the world and has the potential of becoming a luxurious food. Replication and further analysis to expand the properties of vinegar is necessary using old literature, together with the literature identified above. Based on ongoing research, it is foreseeable that the development of a vinegar with unique characteristics and improved standards will be the foundation for the globalization of Korean cuisine, which is our current focus.
