  • The purpose of this study was experimentally to investigate the disintegration process and disintegration mechanism when co-axial air flows vertically for the longest smooth liquid jet. These were affected by liquid velocity, air velocity, air-to-liquid diameter ratio, nozzle shape, and air-liquid contacting position. That is, this process of disintegration of the liquid jet was similar to that occurred when liquid pressure was increased. At Reynolds number of 10, 000 and below, the changes in the breakup length represent different tendency according to liquid flow rate. The influence of air flow on the disintegration of liquid jet was different according to air-to-liquid diameter ratio, air orifice diameter, nozzle shape and contacting position of liquid and air. In particular, when the tip of liquid nozzle was inside the air orifice, the effect of air flow was the larger than outside the air orifice. The effect of liquid mass flow rate on the change rate of the breakup length was also different.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the breakup mechanism of a liquid jet in a coaxial air flow. By using the high speed camera, measured were the instantaneous change of the wave length, amuplitude of disturbance, propagation velocity of wave and breakup length, and the relationships between those data were examined. The shape of the surface of the liquid jet appeared to be rather complicated and irregular. The growth rate of disturbance was not constant, and was changed at the moment of 3ms prior to the disintegration of the liquid jet. Simultaneously at this moment, the propagation velocities of the sequential waves were reversed and the wave length was rapidly decreased.

  • Sub/supercritical spray experiments were conducted, and cryogenic nitrogen and gaseous argon were selected for simulants. liquid nitrogen and gaseous argon were injected in subcritical case, and supercritical nitrogen and near-critical gaseous argon were injected in near-critical/supercritical cases. shadowgraph method was used to visualize spray, and analyzed about the breakup length. The breakup length was measured from numbers of Instantaneous shadowgraph Images from each case, and they were compared with momentum flux ratios and density ratios. It was observed that the relation between breakup length and momentum flux ratio was fitted into former experiment results. and the reasonable constant was suggested about the relation between breakup length and density ratio.

  • The present study has numerically and experimentally investigated the spray behavior of liquid jet injected in subsonic cross-flow. The corresponding spray characteristics are correlated with jet operating parameters. The spray dynamics are known to be distinctly different in the three regimes: the column, the ligament and the droplet regimes. The behaviors of column, penetration and breakup of liquid jet have been studied. Numerical and physical models are base on a modified KIVA code. The primary atomization is represented by a wave model base on the KH(Kelvin-Helmholtz) instability that is generated by a high interface relative velocity between the liquid and gas flows. In odor to capture the spray trajectory, CCD camera has been utilized. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the breakup point is delayed by increasing gas momentum ratio and the penetration decreases by increasing Weber number.

  • The breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by like-doublet injector were investigated in the cold-flow and atmospheric ambient pressure condition. The sheet breakup wavelength, which induces the sheet to be broken into ligaments, as well as the sheet breakup length, which is important for the flame location, was measured using a stroboscopic light. The liquid ligaments are formed intermittently after the breakup of sheet, and the wavelength of ligaments has been believed to have a relation to the combustion instability of liquid rocket engine. Therefore, the wavelength of ligaments and the breakup length of ligaments into fine drops were also measured. Since these spray characteristics are affected by the flow characteristics of two liquid jets before they impinge on each other, we focused on the effects of orifice internal flow such as the cavitation phenomenon that occurs inside the sharp-edged orifice. From the experimental results, we found that the liquid jet turbulence delays the sheet breakup and makes shorter wavelengths for both sheets and ligaments. Since the turbulent strength of sharp-edged orifice is stronger than that of round-edged orifice, the shape of orifice entrance results in large differences in the spray characteristics. Using these results, we proposed empirical models on the spray characteristics of the like-doublet injector, and these models are believed to provide some useful and actual data for designing liquid rocket combustors.

  • Effect of elliptical orifice on the spray characteristics of liquid jet ejecting into subsonic crossflows were experimentally studied. Circular/elliptical plain-orifice injectors, which had different ratios of the orifice length to diameter and major axis to minor axis, were used for transverse injection. Compared with the previous research, breakup lengths of elliptical nozzles are shorter than circular nozzles at all experimental condition. Cavitation/hydraulic flip are considered as a reduction in the breakup length at all circular/elliptical nozzle. In the case of liquid column trajectories, major axis which was placed to the crossflows, increases the frontal area of the liquid column exposed to the crossflows. Hence, the aerodynamic force exerted on the jet is increased and the penetration depth is reduced.

  • Breakup lengths of circular and elliptical liquid jets in a subsonic crossflow were experimentally studied. Two circular-shaped and four elliptical-shaped plain-orifice injectors, which had different aspect ratios and orifice length to diameter ratios, were used to provide various liquid jet conditions such as steady, cavitation, and hydraulic flip. By varying the injection pressure drop from 1 bar to 6 bar, spray images were taken using a shadowgraph technique. Breakup lengths were measured and analyzed. As the aspect ratio in orifices increased, liquid column breakup lengths normalized by the equivalent diameter were reduced irrespectively of the switching of the major or minor axis to the crossflow. It was also found that when hydraulic flip developed inside the orifice, x-directional breakup lengths more decreased for both circular and elliptical liquid jets.

  • Breakup and spray formation of pressure-swirl liquid jets injected into a low-speed convective-flow are experimentally investigated. Effects of the cross-flows on the macroscopic and microscopic spray parameters are optically measured in terms of jet Weber number and liquid-to-gas momentum ratio. The liquid stream undergoes Rayleigh jet breakup at lower jet Weber numbers and a liquid sheet isn't formed because of the weak radial velocity in the swirl jet. At higher jet Weber numbers, the macroscopic spray parameter is a very weak function of the momentum ratio but the effect of the convection on the microscopic spray parameter is significant through the secondary breakup with increasing in the liquid-to-gas momentum ratio. The convective-flow promotes bag/plume breakup and the spray formation, and its effect is more distinct at higher momentum ratio.

  • Breakup characteristics of liquid sheets formed by the impingement of two water jets, such as a breakup length and a breakup wavelength of sheet, were investigated as increasing the injection velocity up to 30m/s and the ambient gas pressure up to 4.0㎫. While round edged orifices formed a laminar sheet which has no waves on the sheet when the injection velocity is low, sharp edged orifices formed a turbulent sheet which has impact waves irrespective of the injection velocity. Thus we compared the differences of breakup characteristics between them. The results showed that the aerodynamic force significantly affects the breakup of laminar sheet when the gas based Weber number is higher than unity. It was also found that the turbulent sheets have three breakup regimes, i.e. expansion regime, wave breakup regime and catastrophic breakup regime according to the gas based Weber number.

  • This study describes the external spray characteristics of deflector nozzle such as the breakup procedures of liquid sheet, spray angle, breakup length and bubble behaviors of spray at deflector nozzle. In order to visualize the spray behaviors shadow graphy technique were used. According to the increase injection pressure, deveopment of the spray passes through the dribbling, distoted jet, closed bubble due to the contraction by form a conical sheet like as the simplex swirl atomizer. As trying the analysis of the ratio of bubble length and width it was found that the ratios is comparable. Spray cone angle was nearly $90^{\circ}$.
