In coflow jets with relatively large size nozzle and low fuel jet velocity, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference between fuel and air streams. The present study investigated the behavior of such a buoyant cold Jet both numerically and experimentally, especially when the fuel stream has higher density than air. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has a circular cone shape since upwardly injected fuel jet decelerates and forms a stagnation region, when the fuel jet was composed of propane highly diluted with nitrogen. When the fuel was moderately diluted, numerical results showed the Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability along the mixing layer of the jet. The stagnation height increases nonlihearly with fuel jet velocity with the power of approximately 1.64.
The objective of this work is to study various vortical structures from controlled circular jet such as trifurcating and blooming jets. The numerical simulations of flow from a circular jet are carried out at $Re_D=4300$ based on the jet-exit velocity and jet diameter using large eddy simulation with the dynamic Smagorinsky model in a cylindrical coordinate system. The excitation for the controlled jet is achieved by combining axial and helical excitations. The axial velocity controlled by blowing and suction at the jet exit has several peaks in their cycle with respect to ratio of axial to helical excitations. This active control changes the spreading angle and vortical structures in the downstream region.
Two turbulent jet with different sinusoidal nozzle exit configurations of in-phase and $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase were investigated experimentally using a smoke-wire method and a hot-wire anemometry. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured at several downstream locations under $Re_D\;=\;5000$. For the case of in-phase nozzle configuration, the length of potential core exhibits negligible difference with respect to the transverse locations (0, $\lambda/4$ and $\lambda/2$), similar to that of a plane jet. On the other hand, a maximum difference of 30% in the potential-core length occurs for the $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase configuration. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities also show significant difference for the nozzle of $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase, whereas non-symmetric distribution is observed in the near-exit region(x/D = 1) for the in-phase sinusoidal nozzle jet. Compared to a slit planc jet, the sinusoidal nozzle jets seem to suppress the velocity deficit as the flow goes downstream. The sinusoidal nozzle jet was found to decrease turbulent intensity dramatically. The flow visualization results show that the flow characteristics of the sinusoidal nozzle jet are quite different from those of the slit plane jet.

The heat transfer phenomenon was investigated in this study when a single round water jet with the low velocity and against the direction of gravity flows to the downward facing Isothermal of definite thickness circular plate. Experimental investigation is performed for a single round jet diameter 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm with the jet velocity 2.4m/s and jet fluid temperature of $24^{\circ}C$, varied the ratio of nozzle clearance/nozzle diameter (H/D)1, 2, 3, 6, and 8, on circular plate isothermal condition with $85^{\circ}C$. The local convection heat transfer coefficient distributions are analyzed based on the visualization of jet flow field. The effects of the diameter of Nozzle, the ratio of H/D and the ratio of nozzle diameter/circular plate diameter on heat transfer phenomenon are investigated. As a results of experiment is obtained correlation equation, $Nu_r=3.18Re_r^{0.55}Pr_r^{0.4}$.
Characteristics of lifted flames for highly diluted propane and methane with nitrogen in coflowing air is experimentally investigated. In case of propane, for various fuel mole fractions and jet velocities, three distinctive types of flames are observed; nozzle attached flames, stationary lifted flames, and oscillating lifted flames. When fuel jet velocity is much smaller than coflow velocity, the base of nozzle attached flame has a tribrachial structure unlike usual coflow difusion flames. Based on the balance mechanism of the propagation speed of tribrachial flame with flow velocity, jet velocity is scaled with stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. Results show that there exists two distinctive lifted flame stabilization; stabilization in the developing region and in the developed region of jets depending on initial fuel mole fraction. It has been found that lifted flame can be stabilized for fuel velocity even smaller than stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. This can be attributed to the buoyancy effect and flow visualization supports it. Lifted flames are also observed for methane diluted with nitrogen. The lifted flames only exist in the developing region of jet.
An experimental study investigates the flame response characteristics of jet-diffusion flame and premixed flame. The experiment was conducted while varying the amplitude. Flame lengths were quantified for OH chemiluminescence measurement and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. Flame length and flame velocity perturbation were normalized and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. The comparison results appear that velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation of premixed flame show linear behaviors on the other hand jet-diffusion flame, amplitudes are more thant 0.20, shows nonlinear behaviors of flame velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation.
Micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) has been widely used to measure the velocity of micro flow. Although this micro-PIV method can give accurate 2D instantaneous velocity information of mea-surement plane, it cannot resolve the out of plane component of velocity vectors. Lots of the micro fluidic devices generate three-dimensional flow and 3D measurement of velocity is useful to understand the physics of micro flow phenomena. In this study, we constructed stereoscopic micro-PIV(SMPIV) system and applied this method to the impinging micro jet flow. The results show that this method can produce accu-rate 3D reconstruction of micro jet flow.
The flow structure and heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were investigated experimentally. The instantaneous temperature and velocity fields in the near field were measured using a two-frame PIV and PLIF techniques. A thin light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the buoyant jet in which Rhodamine B was added as a fluorescent dye. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured by a CCD camera after passing an optical filter. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous temperature and velocity fields, the mean temperature and velocity fields as well as the spatial distributions of turbulent statistics were obtained. The results show the flow structure and convective heat transfer of the developing shear layer in the near field.
The stabilization mechanism of turbulent, lifted jet flames in a non-premixed condition has been studied experimentally. The objectives are to explain the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity and to reveal the mechanisms of flame stability Hydrogen was varied from 100 to 300 m/s and a coaxial air was fixed at 16 m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1 m/s. The technique of PIV and OH PLIF was used simultaneously with CCD and ICCD cameras. It was found that the liftoff height of the jet decreased with an increased fuel jet exit velocity. The leading edge at the flame base was moving along the stoichiometric line. Finally we confirmed that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames is related with a turbulent intensity, which means combustion is occurred where the local flow velocity is equal to the turbulent flame propagation velocity.

A present study is the flow characteristics of impinging jet by PIV measurement and numerical analysis. The flow characteristics of impinging jet flow are affected greatly by nozz1e inlet velocity An circular sharp edged nozzle type($45^{\circ}$ ) was used to achieve uniform mean velocity at the nozz1e inlet, and its diameter is 10 mm(d). Therefore, the flow characteristics on the impinging jet can be changed largely by the control of main flow In this parent study, we investigate the effects of inlet velocity, its variable is nozzle inlet Reynolds numbers (Re=1500, 3000, 4500, 6000 and 7500)
