  • The fluidic flow meter detects the gas flow rate based on the principle of fluidic oscillation instead of the conventional displacement method. It has many merits: wide rangeability, no moving mechanical parts and calibration insensitive to physical properties of fluids. The width of nozzle, size of oscillation chamber, size of target, width of outlet are tested to obtain the effects of jet oscillation on the fluidic flow meter. As the width of nozzle is too wide compared with the size of target, jet oscillation is unstable. The oscillation frequency decreases as the distance between the nozzle and target increases and also as the distance between target and outlet contraction increases. Two different vortexes exist in the front and the rear regions of the target, and they affect the oscillation frequency. The outlet contraction is very important, because the feedback flow is generated by the blocking of the flow. As the width of outlet increases, the jet oscillation frequency decreases. The linearity of this tested flow meter is quite good.

  • When the under-expanded supersonic jet impinges on the perpendicular plate, it is well known that the self-induced flow oscillation occurs at the specific conditions. This phenomenon is related with the noise problems of aeronautical and other industrial engineering. But, the very complicated flow field is formed and it is difficult to clear the flow structure and the mechanism of oscillation. This paper aims to clear the characteristics of flow field and the wave pattern during the under-expanded supersonic jet impinges on the plate. The numerical calculation was carried out using the TVD numerical method. In this paper, the flow visualization, the pressure fluctuation on the surface of plate and the mechanism of oscillation are discussed.

  • The numerical investigation of the interaction between the underexpanded supersonic jet and the perpendicular plate is carried out using the TVD numerical method. The wave structure in the flowfield and the pressure and temperature distributions on the plate surface are obtained by the numerical analysis. Especially, the influence of self-induced flow oscillation caused by the impinging jet and the characteristic of impinging jet are shown. From the result of the numerical analysis, it is concluded that the pressure and the temperature fluctuations on the plate surface strongly depends on the pressure ratio in the flowfield and the position of plate.

  • Experiment is conducted to grasp effects of flame curvature on flame behavior in laminar lifted-jet flames. Nozzle diameters of 0.1 and 1.0mm are used to vary flame curvature of edge flame. There exist three types of edge flame oscillation. These edge flame oscillations may be caused by radial heat loss at all flame conditions, by fuel Lewis numbers near or larger than unity with the help of appreciable radial conduction heat loss, and by buoyancy effects. These are confirmed by the analysis of oscillation frequencies. It is however seen that the change of lift-off height through edge-flame oscillation is mainly due to radial heat loss irrespective of Lewis number and buoyancy.

  • An experimental study investigates the flame response characteristics of jet-diffusion flame and premixed flame. The experiment was conducted while varying the amplitude. Flame lengths were quantified for OH chemiluminescence measurement and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. Flame length and flame velocity perturbation were normalized and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. The comparison results appear that velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation of premixed flame show linear behaviors on the other hand jet-diffusion flame, amplitudes are more thant 0.20, shows nonlinear behaviors of flame velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation.

  • A unique feature of fluidic atomizers is that the nozzle geometry produces a thin capillary Jet which is forced to oscillate on a 2-dimensional plane through the use of a passive feedback mechanism. The objective of the current work is to characterize the influence of the stagnation pressure at the nozzle exit, jet oscillation and stretching on the breakup properties of the capillary ligament. To achieve this, shadow graph technique is used to measure size, shape, velocity and the number density of the droplets as a function of the position within the spray fan. The breakup length, defined as the radial distance from the breakup point, is analyzed as a function of the non-dimensional parameters. Finally, a kinematic model is developed to simulate the breakup of the oscillating jets at low stagnation pressures. Using the existing jet breakup theories, the model is used to predict the size and diameter distribution of the droplets after primary atomization.

  • The present study numerically investigates the effect of shield on the flow characteristics of Hartmann whistle. The flow characteristics of un-shielded Hartmann whistle are compared with whistles of different shield heights 15 mm, 17 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 30 mm. The comparison of Mach number contours and transient velocity vectors of shielded Hartmann whistles with un-shielded ones for the same conditions reveal that the presence of shield causes the exiting jet to stick to the wall of the shield without causing spill-over around the cavity inlet, thus sustaining the shock oscillation as seen in the unshielded Hartmann whistle, which has intense flow/shock oscillation and spill-over around the cavity mouth. The velocity vectors indicate jet regurgitance in shielded whistles showing inflow and outflow phases like un-shielded ones with different regurgitant phases. The sinusoidal variation of mass flow rate at the cavity inlet in un-shielded Hartmann whistle indicates jet regurgitance as the primary operating mode with large flow diversion around the cavity mouth whereas the non-sinusoidal behavior in shielded ones represent that the jet regurgitance is not the dominant operating mode. Thus, this paper sufficiently demonstrates the effect of shield in modifying the flow/shock oscillations in the vicinity of the cavity mouth.

  • When large size nozzle with low jet velocity is used, the buoyancy effect arises from the density difference among propane, air, and burnt gas. Flame characteristics in such buoyant jets have been investigated numerically to elucidate the effect of buoyancy on lifted flames. It has been demonstrated that the cold jet has circular cone shape since upwardly injected propane jet decelerates and forms stagnation region. In contrast to the cold flow, the reacting flow with a lifted flame has no stagnation region by the buoyancy force induced from the burnt gas. To further illustrate the buoyancy effect on lifted flames, the reacting flow with buoyancy is compared with non-buoyant reacting flow. Non-buoyant flame is stabilized at much lower height than the buoyant flame. At a certain range of fuel jet velocities and fuel dilutions. an oscillating flame is demonstrated numerically showing that the height of flame base and tip vary during one cycle of oscillation. Under the same condition. non-buoyant flame exhibits only steady lifted flames. This confirms the buoyancy effect on the mechanism of lifted flame oscillation.

  • A technique of mixing enhancement by using an elliptic jet screech reflector has been examined experimentally in an underexpanded sonic round jet where jet screech tone is generated. Since jet screech is known to enhance jet spreading, a reflector was designed to focus jet screech waves near the nozzle lip at an underexpanded jet. The reflector has an elliptic cross section of which one focus is located near the nozzle lip and the other in the jet screech source region in a plane including the jet axis. In the jet with the elliptic reflector, the mass flow rate showed a significant increase in the jet entrainment when compared to that for the small disk reflector. This was attributed to the increased screech amplitude near the nozzle lip as well as the mode change of the jet. The jet mixing was also increased by the amplified jet screech at two other underexpanded jets, but the jet oscillation mode did not change.
