Protective efficacy of attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium strain expressing BLS, Omp19, PrpA, or SOD of Brucella abortus in goats

  • Background: Attenuated Salmonella strain can be used as a vector to transport immunogens to the host antigen-binding sites. Objectives: The study aimed to determine the protective efficacy of attenuated Salmonella strain expressing highly conserved Brucella immunogens in goats. Methods: Goats were vaccinated with Salmonella vector expressing individually lipoprotein outer-membrane protein 19 (Omp19), Brucella lumazine synthase (BLS), proline racemase subunit A (PrpA), Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) at 5 × 109 CFU/mL and challenge of all groups was done at 6 weeks after vaccination. Results: Among these vaccines inoculated at 5 × 109 CFU/mL in 1 mL, Omp19 or SOD showed significantly higher serum immunoglobulin G titers at (2, 4, and 6) weeks post-vaccination, compared to the vector control. Interferon-γ production in response to individual antigens was significantly higher in SOD, Omp19, PrpA, and BLS individual groups, compared to that in the vector control (all p < 0.05). Brucella colonization rate at 8 weeks post-challenge showed that most vaccine-treated groups exhibited significantly increased protection by demonstrating reduced numbers of Brucella in tissues collected from vaccinated groups. Real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that Brucella antigen expression levels were reduced in the spleen, kidney, and parotid lymph node of vaccinated goats, compared to the non-vaccinated goats. Besides, treatment with vaccine expressing individual antigens ameliorated brucellosis-related histopathological lesions. Conclusions: These results delineated that BLS, Omp19, PrpA, and SOD proteins achieved a definite level of protection, indicating that Salmonella Typhimurium successfully delivered Brucella antigens, and that individual vaccines could differentially elicit an antigen-specific immune response.

Effect of abutment neck taper and cement types on the amount of remnant cement in cement-retained implant restorations: an in vitro study

  • PURPOSE. The present study aims to analyze the effect of abutment neck taper and types of cement on the amount of undetected remnant cement of cement-retained implant prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three neck taper angles (53°, 65°, 77°) and three types of cement (RMGI: resin-modified glass ionomer, ZPC: zinc phosphate cement, ZOE: zinc oxide eugenol cement) were used. For each group, the surface percentage was measured using digital image and graphic editing software. The weight of before and after removing remnant cement from the abutment-crown assembly was measured using an electronic scale. Two-way ANOVA and Duncan & Scheffe's test were used to compare the calculated surface percentage and weight of remnant cement (α = .05). RESULTS. There were significant differences in remnant cement surface percentage and weight according to neck taper angles (P < .05). However, there were no significant differences in remnant cement surface percentage and weight on types of cement. No interaction was found between neck taper angles and types of luting cement (P > .05). The wide abutment with a small neck taper angle showed the most significant amount of remnant cement. And the types of luting cement did not influence the amount of residual cement. CONCLUSION. To remove excess cement better, the emergence profile of the crown should be straight to the neck taper of the abutment in cement-retained implant restoration.

Measurement of S1 foramen depth for ultrasound-guided S1 transforaminal epidural injection

  • Background: Ultrasound-guided first sacral transforaminal epidural steroid injection (S1 TFESI) is a useful and easily applicable alternative to fluoroscopy or computed tomography (CT) in lumbosacral radiculopathy. When a needle approach is used, poor visualization of the needle tip reduces the accuracy of the procedure, increasing its difficulty. This study aimed to improve ultrasound-guided S1 TFESI by evaluating radiological S1 posterior foramen data obtained using three-dimensional CT (3D-CT). Methods: Axial 3D-CT images of the pelvis were retrospectively analyzed. The radiological measurements obtained from the images included 1st posterior sacral foramen depth (S1D, mm), 1st posterior sacral foramen width (S1W, mm), the angle of the 1st posterior sacral foramen (S1A, °), and 1st posterior sacral foramen distance (S1ds, mm). The relationship between the demographic factors and measured values were then analyzed. Results: A total of 632 patients (287 male and 345 female) were examined. The mean S1D values for males and females were 11.9 ± 1.9 mm and 10.6 ± 1.8 mm, respectively (P < 0.001); the mean S1A 28.2 ± 4.8° and 30.1 ± 4.9°, respectively (P < 0.001); and the mean S1ds, 24.1 ± 2.9 mm and 22.9 ± 2.6 mm, respectively (P < 0.001); however, the mean S1W values were not significantly different. Height was the only significant predictor of S1D (β = 0.318, P = 0.004). Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided S1 TFESI performance and safety may be improved with adjustment of needle insertion depth congruent with the patient's height.

Dental Services of the International Summer Camp Event: Experiences from the 25th World Scout Jamboree, South Korea

  • This study aims to analyze dental care at the 25th World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) using a predesigned standardized dental chart to provide a reference for the operation of dental emergency clinics at future large-scale youth events. The dental charts of all patients treated at the 25th WSJ emergency dental clinic were examined. Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the differences between youth scouts and adult leaders. Eighty visits of 71 patients were included in the study. The largest number of patients was from Asia-Pacific (49.3%), followed by patients from Europe (40.8%). In terms of chief complaints, oral ulcers (19.7%), lesions of the lips (18.3%), and orthodontic discomfort (15.5%) were the most prevalent. The analysis showed a significant difference (p = 0.0023) between youth scouts and adult leaders in the distribution of patients in the first half (July 30th - August 3rd) and second half (August 4th - August 8th) of the event. There was a higher incidence of dental conditions associated with hot and humid environments, unlike typical emergency dental settings. Therefore, despite adequate preparation, unexpected dental visits may occur, and it is recommended that operations be conducted in community-based dental hospitals to allow for immediate and efficient responses in international camps.

Case series and technical report of nasal floor approach for mesiodens

  • Objectives: This case series aims to introduce the nasal floor approach for extracting inverted mesiodens. Materials and Methods: Through a retrospective chart review between January 2022 and February 2023, we included the mesiodens patients using nasal floor approach, and analysis the location of mesiodens from the anterior nasal spine (ANS), total operation time, and complications. Results: Each mesiodens was located 10 to 12 mm from the ANS and was covered with a cortical layer of the nasal floor. All mesiodens were successfully extracted without exposing the adjacent incisors or nasopalatine nerve within 30 minutes from draping to postoperative dressing. Conclusion: The nasal floor approach is an efficient extraction method that reduces bone removal and prevents anatomical damage while removing the mesiodens just below the nasal floor bone.

Prevalence and Phylogenetic Analysis of Coccidian Parasites from Wild Animals with Diarrhea in Jeonbuk Province, Korea

  • This study was conducted to determine genetic diversities of Eimeria spp. detected from wildlife. From January 2020 to December 2021, molecular analysis was conducted for Eimeria spp. detected from wildlife rescued in Jeonbuk province, Korea. Polymerase chain reaction targeting 18 s rRNA gene for Eimeria spp. detected from 8 domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica), 1 Oriental turtle dove (Streptopelia orientalis), 1 Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo), 1 Azure-winged magpie (Cyanopica cyanus), 1 Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), and 1 raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) was conducted for phylogenetic analysis. Domestic pigeon and Oriental turtle dove were bound to the same cluster. In addition, carnivorous Eurasian eagle owl and poultry were bound to the same cluster. These results suggest that Eimeria spp. can be shared between similar species regardless of species along the food chain, suggesting that wild birds could be carriers of Eimeria spp. in Korea.

  • Halophyte is a plant that has evolved to grow well in salty places, and is mainly distributed in coastal wetlands, sand dunes, salt fields, and reclaimed lands in tidal flats and river estuaries. Because it grows in the soil where seawater enters and exits, it is very abound in natural minerals and produces certain metabolites to survive sustainably in the surrounding environment. In this study, anti-inflammatory studies were conducted using 15 kinds of halophyte to secure data on halophytes of infinite value as functional materials. The aim of this study was to select a group of halophytes that regulate iNOS expression, which is involved in the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide production in LPS-induced macrophages. Among the 15 species of halophyte, except for Triglochin maritimum, Suaeda japonica, and Carex pumila, NO production was reduced in 12 species of halophytes, and 7 species of halophyte (Suaeda asparagoides, Artemisia fukudo, Spergularia marina, Aster tripolium, Suaeda australis, Atriplex subcordata, Calystegia soldanella) significantly decreased the expression levels of TNF-α and IL-1β.

The Association Among the Fear of COVID-19, Depression, Risk Perception, Health Belief, and Preventive Health Behaviors Related to COVID-19 Among University Students in Jeonbuk Region (전북지역 대학생의 COVID-19에 대한 두려움, 우울, 위험인식, 건강신념과 예방적 건강행위의 연관성)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the association among the fear of COVID-19, depression, risk perception, health belief, and preventive health behaviors related to COVID-19 among university students in Jeonbuk region. Methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire survey. The questionnaire included The Korean Version of Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Korean Version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and measurement tools adapted from previous studies for risk perception, health belief, and preventive health behaviors of subjects. We analyzed data using Pearson's correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and path analysis using SPSS 22 and AMOS 21. Results : The fear of COVID-19 showed significant positive influence on health belief as well as risk perception. Depression had a significant negative impact on preventive health behaviors and risk perception. Health belief showed a significant positive impact on preventive health behavior. Conclusion : Rresults revealed that the higher the level of depression was, the lower risk perception and performance of preventive health behavior were among university students in Jeonbuk region. As the level of the fear of COVID-19 became higher, the level of health belief and risk perception became higher. The higher the level of health belief was, the higher the performance level of preventive health were. Thus, it is prudent to increase the level of health belief, and lower the level of depression, in promoting preventive health behavior.

Study on Cytotoxicity by Extract of Halophytes Collected in the West Coast of Korea (서해안 자생 염생식물 추출물의 RAW264.7세포에 대한 독성 검토)

  • 소금기가 있는 토양에서 잘 자라는 염생식물은 우리나라 서해안에 널리 분포하여 자생하고 있다. 하지만, 특수 환경에서 자라는 특성 때문에 생리활성에 대한 연구가 많이 되어 있지 않다. 특히, 염생식물의 장내세균에 대한 영향 연구는 거의 없어 새로운 활용에 대한 기대가 커지고 있다. 관련 생리활성평가를 위한 기초데이터를 얻기 위해 2020년6월 충남 태안, 전북 부안, 전남 무안에서 총16종의 염생식물을 채취하여 RAW264.7세포에 대한 세포독성을 검토하였다. 시료를 30% 에탄올로 추출하여, 농축, 동결건조를 통해 분말로 만든 후, 0.1-100 ug/mL의 농도로 RAW264.7세포에 처리하였다. 24시간 후, MTT법으로 세포독성을 측정한 결과, 총16종 중 갯질경, 좀보리사초, 갯개미자리 추출물에서 세포독성이 확인되었다. 본 연구를 통해 세포 수준에서 안전성이 확보된 시료를 활용하여 장내세균에 대한 영향 등을 검토할 계획이다.
