  • This study was performed to investigate the physicochemical properties of raw and roasted oats for the production of processed goods. Changes in particle size, pH, moisture content, Hunter b value, polyphenols, proteins, flavonoids, lipid rancidity, ${\beta}-glucan$ content and sensory evaluation were compared between raw and roasted hulled oats (HO) and de-hulled oats (DO) after heating treatment at 0, 80, 120, 160 and $200^{\circ}C$. HO was more finely crushed than DO. The Hunter b value of HO was lower than that of DO, which increased sharply at $200^{\circ}C$. The pH range was from 6.2 to 6.6, with an average value of 6.4. In contrast to the protein contents of the two oat types, polyphenol content showed gradual decrease as roasting temperature increased. A comparison of the flavonoid content of HO with DO, indicated difference in the increase of flavonoids with increasing temperature. The protein content of HO was observed to be higher than that of DO. Furthermore, the protein level was slightly increased with increasing temperature. Malonidialdehyde (MDA) content was statistically identical from $0^{\circ}C$ to $160^{\circ}C$, but then increased sharply at $200^{\circ}C$. As expected, the ${\beta}-glucan$ content of HO was higher than that of DO. The ${\beta}-glucan$ content of HO was decreased at $80^{\circ}C$, but increased from $120^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the ${\beta}-glucan$ of DO increased constantly compared to the control. Variations in sensory characteristics such as color, taste, smell and overall preference were observed. There were statistically significant difference among the sensory characteristics of the two oat types heated at $0^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$ and at $160^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05). Our collective results, including those for particle size, MDA, protein, ${\beta}-glucan$ content and sensory evaluation, indicated that HO would be more useful in the development of processed goods than DO, and that an optimum temperature for roasting oats is approximately $160^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. Moreover, our results indicate that suitable roasting temperatures and cultivars are necessary to produce high-quality processed oat goods.

  • Economic injury levels (EILs) and economic threshold (ET) were estimated for the two spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari, Tetranychidae) on greenhouse eggplants. T. urticae density increased until the mid-July and thereafter decreased in all plots where initial density of the mite were different each 0, 2, 5, 10 and 20 adults per plant was innoculated on June 7. Growth variables of were not different among experimental plots but fruit weights were lower in plots with higher initial mite density than in plots with lower initial mite density. Total number of fruits and the number of marketable fruits decreased in plots with higher initial mite density. The rates of yield loss increased with increasing initial mite density, resulting in 0, 3.9, 11.3, 14.5, 22.8% reduction in each of the above plots, respectively. The relationship between initial T. urticae densities and yield losses was well described by a linear regression, Y = 1.085X + 2.474, $R^2$ = 0.9659. Based on the relationship, the number of adults per plant which can cause 5% loss of yield was estimated to be approximately 1.8.

  • A climatic feature, growth condition and incidence phase of disease and pest in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) were surveyed, both the conventional cultivation and culture in the forest located in Jinan. The results were as follows. The forest field was lower $1^{\circ}C$ in the air temperature, lower $1.9^{\circ}C$ in the soil temperature and 11.8% lower in the soil temperature compared with the conventional field. The wind velocity of the forest field was three times slower, but the dew condensation time was 3.3 hours longer than the conventional field. Particularly, the amounts of solar radiation in the forest was remarkably lower, while the rainfall was little lower with no significance. The incidence of disease and pest in the forest field was severe compared with that of the conventional field. Among them, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Cylindrocarpon destructans, and Alternaria panax was severe in the forest field while, Botrytis cinerea was severe in the conventional field. The growth condition of forest field in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer was 50% worse in general and the root weight was 87.2% less than the 3-year-old ginseng in the conventional field.

  • Skin ridge (SR) is a irregular line shape that stand out in epidermal layer on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.). SR reduced marketable value of storage root in sweet potato. It would be occurred by accumulation of starch in epidermal layer. SR rate was more highly increased in early planting. SR rate was under 3% in 7 varieties 'Geonpoongmi', 'Yeonhwangmi', 'Geonmi' etc and the rate of two varieties 'Healthymi', 'Borami' were up to 30%. SR rate was positively correlated with vine weight. SR rate was the highest in 120 days after planting. As leaf area index was reduced to 3, 4, 5 and 6 (non-topping) by topping, it was hard to fine SR occurrence in topping treated sweet potato. Topping treatment, however, caused decrease in yield overall. Therefore, topping treatment for decreasing of SR was not recommended in agricultural practice of sweet potato.

  • In June 2015, an exhibited typical signs and symptoms of brown rot was observed on fruit of Apricot cvs. Modern and Alexander at an incidence of 5% of fruit in Jeonju, Korea. Early symptoms on fruit showed small, circular, light brown spots that eventually destroyed the entire fruit. Small sporodochia appeared on the fruit surface. Fruit susceptibility to brown rot increases during the 1 to 2 weeks period prior to harvest. The conidia were one-celled, hyaline, lemon-shaped, $14.6-18.0{\times}8.5-11{\mu}m$, and borne in branched monilioid chains. Based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the fungus was identified as Monilinia fructicola. A BLAST search revealed that sequences of the fungus shared 100% identity to those of M. fructicola. Pathogenicity of a representative isolate was proved by artificial inoculation, fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report on the occurrence of M. fructicola on apricot in Korea.

  • To investigate the usefulness of Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L.) as mushroom culture media source, we analyze physical condition and contents of nutritional components. The water absorption rate of Kenaf bast was 578% and it was 95% higher than that of poplar sawdust's. This was caused by Kenaf's porous cellular structure. so it could give more moisture and oxygen to cultured mushroom. Total carbon contents of Kenaf was 91.4%, it was quite higher than that of poplar sawdust, wheat bran and rice bran. Total nitrogen content was 1.76% and C/N ratio was 51.9. The content of NFE(Nitrogen free extract) was 46.6% and it was similar with rice bran. Cellulose content was higher than poplar but lignin content was lower. specially hemicellulose and pectin complex which more digestible carbon source to mushroom was 3.7% higher than poplar. Mineral component and amino acid contents were also maintained high compared with poplar. Fe was 4.2 times, P 3.2 times, K 2.2 times more and Ca was higher 16 mg/kg than poplar. The content of amino acid was quite more higher than poplar sawdust but lower than chaff. Consequently Kenaf had a good trait for basic support material in mushroom culture media and also had a good character as nutritional source.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the economic injury level (EIL) to leaf broccoli (leaf vegetable) by the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) in 2007 and obtain basic data for pest management. To investigate the relationship between initial density of diamondback moth larvae and broccoli leaf yield, experimental plots with five treatments (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 larvae per plant) as initial density were established. We inoculated larvae on cheesecloth covering to survey changes in larval density. When grown for consumption, leaves of broccoli are harvested in periods. High levels of larvae were associated with significant reductions in leaf yield. There were 0%, 15%, 35%, 42%, 44% yield reductions due to a density of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 diamond back moth larvae per plant, respectively, 25 days after larva inoculation. The regression equation used to predict leaf yield based on the number of initial larvae per plant was y = 1636-394x($R^2=0.79^{***}$>). EIL of the diamondback moth on leaf broccoli was 2~3 larvae per 10 plants for a damage level of 5%. The economic threshold was 1~2 larvae per 10 plants. Thus, diamondback moth management should be initiated when 1~2 larvae appear on 10 plants.
