Biting midges belonging to the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) were collected by Mosquito $Magnet^{(R)}$ and black light traps at 5 sites on Jeju-do, Republic of Korea (Korea), from May-November 2013 to determine species diversity and seasonal distribution. A total of 4,267 specimens were collected, of which 99.9% were female. The most common species was Culicoides tainanus (91.8%), followed by C. lungchiensis (7.2%) and C. punctatus (0.6%), while the remaining 4 species accounted for <0.5% of all Culicoides spp. that were collected. High numbers of C. tainanus were collected in May, followed by decreasing numbers through August, and then increasing numbers through November when surveillance was terminated. Peak numbers of C. lungchiensis were collected during September, with low numbers collected from May-August and October-November. The presence of C. lungchiensis in Korea was confirmed by morphological and molecular analyses.
Cyrtomium yamamotoi Tagawa is an unrecorded species of perennial Pteridophyta that belongs to the genus Cyrtomium of Dryopteriaceae. It is known as native to Taiwan, China and Japan, but we found it in Jeju-si, Jeju-do and Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea in 2018. This species is very similar to C. fortunei J.Sm. having characters such as 1 pinnate compound leaves, globular indusium, but distinguished from the latter by its lanceolate or lanceolate-ovate shaped lateral pinnates of less than 12 pairs, bicolor indusium with dark brown or blackish in center, and margin incised teeth. Here, we provide its description, photographs and a key of related taxa in Korea.
Jeju lava seawater's abundant minerals are known to exert antioxidant effects that remove the free radicals responsible for aging. Therefore, lava seawater reportedly possesses high commercial value as a functional food material. This study compared and analyzed the antioxidant activities of extracts from crops produced in Jeju (carrots, blueberries, and mandarins) using distilled water and lava seawater as solvents. Lava seawater extracts exhibited higher total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of blueberries and mandarins than distilled water extracts. Furthermore, the antioxidant enzymatic and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activities of these crops were higher in lava seawater extracts than in distilled water extracts. In particular, using Vero cells, the ROS-scavenging efficacies of blueberries and mandarins were found to be higher in lava seawater extracts. Meanwhile, the antioxidant activities of carrots were higher in lava seawater extracts, despite no difference in total polyphenol and flavonoid contents. These results suggest that lava seawater exhibits favorable potential as a solvent in the functional food industry, and lava seawater-based Jeju crop extracts are potentially useful as functional food ingredients.

The military remains have a social and historic value in holding up a true mirror to modern history of war and suffering, and will be used for historic place in Korea. This study is to research these modern military remains as cultural properties in Korea. They are classified with three types, namely military sites, installations of civil structures and buildings. The military remains have the historic sites of the righteous army and Korean war, and most of them are battle fields located in a mountainous area rather than urban area. There are fortresses, bridges and tunnels, and watchtowers of civil structures. The fortresses were constructed with Japanese military installations in the end of the Pacific War, and are most located in Sangmo-ri, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do, Korea. The bridges were to be destroyed and constructed during the war, and the watchtowers as military defence were to be constructed in inland area. There are arsenals, barracks, and headquarters of buildings. The weapon factory of Gigiguk (arsenal bureau) constructed in the late 19th century are present, and also the army training center, barracks, and church, etc are in Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do, Korea. There are old headquarters constructed in 1910s at Jinhae Gyeongnam, and buildings to testify about the horrors of the Korean war around Cheorwon, Gangwon.
By-products from fisheries produced in Korea are of the same industrial material as imported raw materials and are valuable resources for marine bioindustries. Securing raw materials for the mass production of functional materials is one of the main objectives for marine bioindustrial development. The use of fishery by-products as raw materials is anticipated to increase rapidly as the biomarket is growing into a promising industry. In this study, data were acquired from an open-source environment to perform exploratory data analysis, and various visualization methods were used to compare fishery production to the production of marine processed products in the year 2020. This study suggested that the amount of seafood processing, types of processing items, and areas where fishery processing residue is generated, should be able to secure hygienic raw material supply in large quantities. Thus far, it has been found that the Gyeonggi-do and Busan province, where HACCP-certified processing facilities are concentrated, and the local government Seafood Cluster and the Smart Aquaculture Cluster are at the forefront of stable, mass production of raw materials.
This study was performed to find out the clusters with high parasite infection risk to discuss the geographical pattern. Clusters were detected using SatScan software, which is a statistical spatial scan program using Kulldorff's scan statistic. Information on the parasitic infection cases in Korea 2011-2019 were collected from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Clusters of Ascaris lumbricoides infection were detected in Jeollabuk-do, and T. trichiura in Ulsan, Busan, and Gyeongsangnam-do. C. sinensis clusters were detected in Ulsan, Daegu, Busan, Gyeongsangnamdo, and Gyeongsangbuk-do. Clusters of intestinal trematodes were detected in Ulsan, Busan, and Gyeongsangnam-do. P. westermani cluster was found in Jeollabuk-do. E. vermicularis clusters were distributed in Gangwon-do, Jeju-do, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju. This clustering information can be referred for surveillance and control on the parasitic infection outbreak in the infection-prone areas.

The aim of this study is to investigate to which degree farmers did the crop switching and cultivar renewal as a confrontational strategy to climate change, and which problems they had in that process, and then to provide the supporting plans for them. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 15 citrus farmers of the KNCAP graduates in Jeju Island. Most of the survey respondents agreed to the climate change of Jeju Island and the subtropical climate of its coastal area. The farmers have experienced irregular weather such as abnormal high temperature, frequent rain, and droughts, resulting in the harmful insects and new weeds attack. As the climate change strategies, they are adopting a greenhouse culture system, improving a soil drainage using reorganization of planting space, making a new pest management program, and trying to switch a crop to subtropical fruits. It is expected that 50% of the survey respondents have changed their crops or will do; and 73 % of them have changed cultivar or have a plan to do. Only a few farmers directly pointed to a reason for their efforts to change the crops or to renew the cultivars as the anti-climate change strategy, however, most farmers answered the reason was to increase profitability by meeting their consumers' tastes. Presently, it is not the anti-climate change strategy but increase of profitability by meeting the consumers' needs the reason why most of the survey respondents have changed their crops or renewed the cultivars, while a few of them switched their crops to a subtropical fruit trees due to climate change. On the crop switching, they had some difficulties such as a labor shortage, availability of land, operating costs and instable income. On the cultivar renewal, also, they encountered the lack of cultivating techniques for new cultivars and the dim future for the new market. In long-term perspective, Jeju's farmers need new information and educational programs about the effect of climate change on agriculture of Jeju, and cultivation techniques for new crops and new cultivars.
