We conducted a time-series analysis of temperature and salinity of sea water around Jeju Island, Korea. Monthly mean temperature and salinity was influenced by precipitation and weather conditions on Jeju as well as by oceanographic conditions of the open sea such as the Tsushima Warm Current and sea water in coastal areas. Salinity of Jeju coastal waters was the highest in April, and it was always over 34.00 psu with tiny fluctuation between December and June. Due to the effects of the Tsushima Warm Current, Jeju coastal waters maintained high salinity and stability. Low salinity and its large fluctuations during summer were closely associated with the China Coastal Water and precipitation in Jeju. The place of the lowest water temperature was the northeast coasts of Jeju (Gimneong, Hado, Jongdalri). In winter, as warmer water of the Tsushima Warm Current appeared in western area of Jeju dwindled flowing along the northern coasts of Jeju area and becoming cool, the lowest water temperature often appeared locally in Gimnyeong and its vicinitly in summer. The Tsushima Warm Current flows into the east entrance of Jeju Strait, but its influence is weak because of geometry and strong vertical mixing due to fast tidal currents.
A total of 19 species of three genera Dinophysis, Histioneis, and Parahistioneis of the family Dinophysaceae are reported here from samples obtained using a 20-µm mesh net from June 2006 to December 2014 around Jeju Island including the East China Sea, and 16 of these species are new to Korean waters. A checklist of the three genera of dinoflagellates reported from coastal and oceanic Korean waters is presented. Short descriptions and synonyms are given for each species. The dinoflagellates of the family Dinophysaceae belong to mostly marine species, and include many tropical and/or subtropical species. Recently, the composition of dinoflagellate species has changed around Jeju Island as well as in Korean waters due to global warming and climate change. Tropical and subtropical dinoflagellates occur frequently in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, which reflects the ecosystem shift around the sea adjacent to Jeju Island from a temperate to a subtropical / tropical region.

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) commonly inhabit Korean waters, including the coastal waters of Jeju Island. However, their taxonomic position was unclear because of the validity of this genus. The genus Tursiops has recently been determined to comprise two species: the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus). To confirm the taxonomic position of bottlenose dolphins frequenting the coastal waters of Jeju Island, the external morphology and osteology of specimens from Jeju Island were examined. Photographs of free-swimming individuals were also used for determining external morphological characters. The cranial and meristic measurements fell within the ranges of T. aduncus. Osteological ratios were also consistent with those of T. aduncus. The presence of a prominent ventral spot was observed among some individuals. As a result, the dolphins mainly distributed in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were identified as Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (T. aduncus) in terms of their cranial characters and ventral spotting. We propose a new Korean name, 'Nambang-keun-dol-go-rae'.
In the area around Jeju Island, the squid jigging fishery and the hair-tail angling are popular. Therefore, the study on the characteristics of the formation and shift of fishing grounds is very important. We have received and analyzed AIS data of all vessels around Jeju Island from October 16, 2016 to October 16, 2017, and extracted the positions of the fishing vessels with the same operational characteristics as the fishing vessels of their fisheries. The distribution chart of the frequency of fishing vessels appearing in each predefined fishing grid ($1NM{\times}1NM$) was analyzed. So we took a analogy with the monthly shift of fishing grounds. Many fishing vessels appeared in the seas around Jeju Island from November 2016 to January 2017, and the frequency of their appearance was maintained. In November, however, fishing vessels were mostly concentrated in coastal waters. Yet, the density gradually weakened as they moved into January. From February, the frequency itself began to decline, making it the worst in April. The high concentration of fishing vessels in the waters leading from Jeju Island's northwest coast to south coast in November is believed to be related to the yellowtail fishery that are formed annually in the coastal waters off the island of Marado. In May 2017, the appearance frequency of fishing vessels increased and began to show a concentration in coastal waters around Jeju Island. Fishing vessels began to flock in waters northwest of Jeju Island beginning in July and peaked in August, and by September, fishing vessels were moving south along the coast of Jeju Island, weakening the density and spreading out. Between July and August, fishing vessels were concentrated in waters surrounding Jeju Island, which is believed to be related to the operations of fishing vessels for the squid jigging fishery and the hair-tail angling.
This study investigates the temporal and spatial variations of marine meterological elements (air temperature (Temp), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and Significant Wave Height (SWH)) in seven coastal waters of South Korea, using hourly data observed at marine meteorological buoys (10 sites), Automatic Weather System on lighthouse (lighthouse AWS) (9 sites), and AWS (20 sites) during 2013-2017. We also compared the characteristics of Temp, SST, and air-sea temperature difference (Temp-SST) between sea fog and non-sea-fog events. In general, annual mean values of Temp and SST in most of the coastal waters were highest (especially in the southern part of Jeju Island) in 2016, due to heat waves, and lowest (especially in the middle of the West Sea) in 2013 or 2014. The SWH did not vary significantly by year. Wind patterns varied according to coastal waters, but their yearly variations for each coastal water were similar. The maximum monthly/seasonal mean values of Temp and SST occurred in summer (especially in August), and the minimum values in winter (January for Temp and February for SST). Monthly/seasonal mean SWH was highest in winter (especially in December) and lowest in summer (June), while the monthly/seasonal variations in wind speed over most of the coastal waters (except for the southern part of Jeju Island) were similar to those of SWH. In addition, sea fog during spring and summer was likely to be in the form of advection fog, possibly because of the high Temp and low SST (especially clear SST cooling in the eastern part of South Sea in summer), while autumn sea fog varied between different coastal waters (either advection fog or steam fog). The SST (and Temp-SST) during sea fog events in all coastal waters was lower (and more variable) than during non-sea-fog events, and was up to -5.7℃ for SST (up to 5.8℃ for Temp-SST).
Eleven wrasse species inhabit the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. They are the target of leisure fishing and are considered good eating. We investigated the distribution of standard length (SL) by sex of wrasse in Jeju coastal waters for Halichores poecilopterus, H. tenuispinis, Pseudolabrus japonicus, and Pteragogus flagellifera. A cross-section of the ovary showed the ovarian cavity and ovarian lamellae containing oocytes. A cross-section of the testis showed many lobules containing spermatogonia and spermatocytes. A cross-section of a gonad undergoing sex reversal showed the regression or reduction of oocytes and some spermatocytes located in the ovarian lamellae. A cross-section of a sex-reversed testis showed the primary structure of the ovary, with spermatocytes distributed in the epithelium of the lamellae, and reformed seminiferous ducts in the basement lamellae. China Coastal Water (CCW) usually appears in the seas surrounding Jeju Island annually (June?October) and is very pronounced in August. The power spectrum density (PSD), sea level anomalies (SLAs), and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were found to peak annually and semiannually. The peaks at intervals of 80-, 60-, and 43-days are considered to be influenced by CCW and the Kuroshio Current. Generally, low-salinity water appears to the west of Jeju Island from June through October and gradually propagates to the east, where CCW meets the Tsushima Current. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of SLAs and SSTs indicated that the variance in SLAs and SSTs was 55.70 and 98.09% in the first mode, respectively. The PSD for the first mode of EOF analysis of SLAs was stronger in the western than in the eastern waters because of the influence of CCW. The PSD for the EOF analysis of SSTs was similar in all areas (the Yangtze Estuary and the waters to the west and east of Jeju Island), with a period of approximately 260 days.
Greate white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, are found in almost all the temperate and tropical coastal waters around the world. There have been 19 appearances reported in Korean coastal waters since June 1996 and seven shark attacks have been reported. There are about 400 species of sharks in the world, and 41 species of them have been found in Korean coastal waters. Thirteen of them belong to the Carcharhinidae family, and five of them belong to the Squalidae family. Of these sharks, 15 species of them live off of the East coast, 18 species live off of the West coast, and the other 40 species are distributed around Jeju Island and the South coast. Eleven species of them, including the great white shark, live off of all the coastal waters of Korea.
This study was investigated seasonal variation and species composition of fish species at artificial reefs (octangle three-stage compartment type and dice type)and natural rock in the Shinyang-Ri coastal waters off Jeju Island with visual census method in January 2009, April 2009, July 2009, September 2009, December 2009, March 2010, June 2010, and September 2010. A total of 44 fish species was occurred, and the dominant fish species were Apogon semilineatus, Chromis notata, Trachurus japonicus, Sebastes thompsoni and Apogon doederleini. The number of individuals of fishes was higher at April 2009 and March 2010, however, lower at June 2010 and September 2010. The number of fish speices was higher at artificial reefs than those of at natural rock. Apogon semilineatus was dominant at octangle three-stage compartment type and the dice type artificial reefs, whereas Chromis notata was for natural rock. These results indicated that artificial reefs were good habitats for a variety of fish species in the Shinyang-Ri coastal waters off Jeju Island.
Anchovy spawn from the end of May to mid-October, when the water temperature is $14.8-27.2\;^{\circ}C$ and the salinity is 26.0-33.6 psu. The main spawning season is between July to August, when the water temperature is $21.7-27.2\;^{\circ}C$ and the salinity is between 26.0-32.2 psu. The main spawning grounds of anchovy are coastal areas shallower than 50 m around the islands located in the Jeju Strait. Anchovy larvae are distributed near the fronts between Chuja-do, Jangsu-do, Yeoseo-do, and the open sea rather than in the spawning grounds. Anchovy eggs and larvae density increased in accordance with the high level of $Chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ during the summer season (July-August). In terms of the suspended sediment (SS) levels along the northern coast of the Jeju Strait, high densities of anchovy eggs (12.0-18.0 mg/L) were observed, mainly in the area affected by the coastal waters of the southern sea with high SS levels, while larvae (10.0-19.0 mg/L) tended to be distributed over a wide area with high SS levels, including the open sea. In terms of the dissolved oxygen (DO) content, eggs (5.4-6.8 mg/L) were observed in coastal areas with a high DO content, while larvae (4.2-6.4 mg/L) were distributed widely in areas with a relatively low DO content, from the southern coast to the open sea.
