The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of architectural characteristics of the rural houses in Jeju area for the last half a century. 72 houses in eight villages, which have been spontaneously renovated or added, were chosen as the rersearch samples. The subjects were classified into three groups-traditional, modernized, and contemporary houses-mainly by their construction years. Based upon these classification, the factors of change and continuation in building layout and spatial composition of dwellings have been investigated. As the results, Jeju rural houses show the tendency of the various and rapid changes in overall shape and spatial composition, but the traditional concepts of composition in plan has been maintained. Especially, the open structure of three-folded houses and the utilization of traditional floor system have been maintained as major design concepts to compose a house.

Modern society is filled with the pursuit of material wealth and great convenience due to high technology that has been introduced to all facets of society. There is no exception to this in the field of construction. Modern construction, however, has caused environmental destruction and pollution, disturbing the coexistence of humans and nature. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore how humans and nature can maintain a mutually beneficial relationship by looking into the construction of Jeju's traditional dwelling house. This thesis examines the geographical features of Jeju and looks into how Jeju people have adapted themselves to nature. It is assumed that geographical features have created Jeju's unique environment and style of architecture and differentiated Jeju's traditional houses from those of other regions. Also, it is considered that geographical features had a large impact on traditional construction such as the floor plan and the layout of buildings. Accordingly, this thesis explores the way traditional houses protected house dwellers from the natural environment and examines the wisdom of our ancestors who took advantage of the natural environment. In addition, this thesis aims to contribute to creating Jeju's unique construction culture and environment by studying materials, structures, and forms that were applied to the traditional houses of Jeju.

Dwelling environments that can help elderly farmers to live more safely, independently, and conveniently are becoming more and more important. Many rural houses are built without any particular architectural or energy-related criteria, so most of them have poor insulation. The construction technology used is also not precise, which increases the loads for heating and cooling. Therefore, rural houses need to be improved. Also, there is more and more need for plans to realize eco-friendly dwellings, so the principle of nature-oriented plans related to the direction, insulation, or landscaping of a house is being emphasized. Insulation is one of the most effective ways to save energy for heating and cooling. This preliminary study to improve the insulation of rural houses examined three regions in South Korea: the central region, the southern region, and the Jeju Island. A field investigation was conducted on a total of 18 houses, including six from each town in the selected regions. The information was used to figure out the current status of rural houses and the characteristics of the buildings. The main living spaces are the living room for the central region and the main room in the southern region and Jeju Island. The southern regions are plane shapes surrounded by rooms, and all ventilation is accomplished by windows. The studied houses were mostly masonry structures with slate rooftops. Additions and improvements included room expansions and bathroom interior installations.

This paper aims to find out the effective solutions for overcoming the crisis of school closure in rural villages. Fortunately, we have some relevant cases that show the important roles of local communities providing rental houses to the potential residents. This study researches eight cases of elementary schools and their communities in Jeju which have overcome the crisis by providing rental houses to the immigrants. The results are as follows. First, it is effective to provide rental houses to prevent school closure crisis. Second, it is highly recommended to consider advancing schools for students and to offer possible jobs for their parents in order to make sustainable schools and communities. Third, in addition to the treatments for overcoming crisis of school closure, comprehensive measurements for improving new residents' quality of lives along with the collaboration between schools and communities, relations between natives and immigrants, and financial aids from central and local government should be implemented.
The objective of this research is to find out status and consciousness about shrouds according to changes of Jeju's rural funeral ritual while reviewing Jeju's traditional shrouds. Consciousness of customs regarding tradition is much stronger in Jeju Island. Since it was said that shrouds and changes of funeral ritual have very systematic correlation according to the result of precedent researches, changes of funeral rituals of Jeju's rural area were examined. At the same time, consciousness about traditional shrouds of Jeju people was also studied. As the result of examination through literary investigation, visits to rural homes, visits to production places of Jeju's shrouds and interviews with grandmothers designated as human cultural assets of traditional Jeju shrouds, etc, it was found out that Jeju's rural funeral rituals had been rapidly changed since 2000. Traditional Jeju shrouds are also disappearing. In particular, old women of Jeju have considered preparation of their own and their husbands' shrouds in advance as a virtue. However, as it gradually became more difficult to produce and prepare traditional shrouds at homes and as the space of funeral was changed from their own houses to hospitals and/or commercial funeral homes, it was found out that a ratio of people's using general shrouds sold in market was increased and it is believed that this kind of trend will be accelerated more and more in the future.
Phytophthora-induced diseases on citrus in Jeju island have been considered of minor importance because of the use as root stock of trifoliate orange, which is immune to Phytophthora. However, brown rot on fruit, which severely occurred in 1998 and 1999, has become a great threat to citrus production in the island. About one-half of the surveyed orchards were infected in 1998 and 4 out of 19 infected fields showed over 20% fruit infection rate. The disease was less severe in 1999, with an estimated infected area and total fruit reduction of 3,155 ha and 15,300 tons, respectively. Typical gummosis was also occasionally observed on cv. Shiranugi, which is mostly cultivated under plastic film houses. Two types of Phytophthora were consistently isolated from various plant parts, identified as P. citrophthora and P. nicotianae. The former was isolated from the aerial parts of the fruit, young leaf, and shoot in the fields. Meanwhile, the latter was only isolated from the basal stem showing gummosis in plastic film houses.
Stonewall in Jeju has been regarded as the one of the most esthetic landscape in rural regions. In addition, they have been played as a useful facility to protect houses or crops from strong winds, but also to indicate the boundary of ownership. In the recent research, stonewall has been appointed as the one of important components in rural landscape. Thus, stonewall in Jeju retains intrinsic and real value by many usages in rural regions. However, in spite of it's value, stonewall has been abandoned without any concerns and political measures. Now stonewall is urgently needed to be dealt by a certain political measure for protection. Therefore, the depth of concerns and systematic management measures for protection should be discussed and made, otherwise the destruction of these natural valuable structures will be continued. In this sense, the purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the status of stonewall in jeju. And then, with the result of this examination, political measures and suggestions to protect stonewall are proposed. Several areas such as Sungsan, Sinchon, and so on in Jeju are selected as the sample areas for this study, and examination are carried with a wide range of literature reviews and the GIS technology for data collection and analyses.
