Research on Jaywalking Characteristics of Elderly/Non-Elderly (고령자/비고령자의 무단횡단 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the walking characteristics of jaywalking pedestrians, which account for a large proportion of deaths in pedestrian traffic accidents. Method: As for the analysis method, after collecting data of jaywalking pedestrians using imaging equipment, frequency analysis and statistical verification were performed on the jaywalking characteristics of elderly and non-elderly people. Result: It was found that there was a difference in the characteristics of jaywalking between the elderly and non-elders, but in the case of walking speed, insignificant results were derived. However, it was found that among the elderly, the group having difficulty walking in general had a lower walking speed than the group that did not. Conclusion: It is judged that one of the causes of jaywalking is the perception of illegal activities and insensitivity to the risk of accidents, not the age and walking ability. Therefore, in addition to safety education, it is judged that it is necessary to provide pedestrian safety information that requires the driver's attention in multiple jaywalking sections.

A Study on Pedestrian Crashes Contributing Factors During Jaywalking - Focused on the case of Seoul - (무단횡단 교통사고 요인에 관한 연구 - 서울시 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • Seoul has 424 traffic fatalities in 2010 and 227 of them related to pedestrian crashes. In addition, it revealed that 40% of pedestrian fatalities occurred during jaywalking. Through the effective methods preventing jaywalking can save lots of people, and it can reduce social costs pertinent to pedestrian crashes. Therefore, this study is to suggest the methods preventing jaywalking through conducting literature reviews, human factors with pedestrian and vehicle characteristics, as well as geometric features of accident site or spot. Firstly, in order for examining the contributing factors of accident, this research conducts statistical analysis on pedestrian accidents specifically in jaywalking. Secondly, the analysis on human factors about pedestrian and drivers revealed that drivers with high speed play pivotal roles in pedestrian fatalities. Thirdly, Road and environment factors showed both expected and contradictory results through analyzing total numbers of lane or dry/icy pavement conditions. Consequently, this study can be used to prevent and alleviate pedestrian accidents as well as expected to be applied to future researches about pedestrian safety facilities.

A Study on Tram Traffic Accidents Characteristics and Safety Measures (트램 교통사고 특성 및 안전대책에 관한 연구)

  • This study is a basic study to prepare safety measures for the tram that is being introduced into Korea by reviewing accident analysis and accident compensation system of the tram. Analysis of accident characteristics of the tram was analyzed based on overseas data. Five years after the inauguration of the tram, accidents were halved and stabilized. Deaths accounted for 0.5 % of all casualties, most accidents were minor. Accidents with other mean transportation were high 84.1 %, among them accidents with passenger cars was found to be highest. The frequent points of accidents were analyzed as intersections and tram stop, and measures for pedestrian accidents were found to be important. Those are proposed safety measures through analyzing tram accident characteristics: Monitoring accidents which occur within five years of its inauguration, developing accident database input system, installation of fences for preventing people from jaywalking, operating traffic signal for preventing people from jaywalking through connection of pedestrian signals and tram signals, clamping down on illegal U-turn cars and jaywalking pedestrian, Also, those are proposed accident treatment measures based on general driver receptively and overseas data: property damage liability coverage (PI) of car insurance, comparative negligence when the accident occurs between car and tram.

A Study on the Risk of Conflict between Elderly or Non-elderly Pedestrians and Vehicles (고령/비고령 보행자와 차량간의 상충위험도 측정연구)

  • Traffic accident fatalities in Korea in 2016 was 4,292 and 1,732 cases were deaths of elderly people. In spite of this, the researches on behaviors of the elderly when crossing roads, are rather limited. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze road crossing behavior characteristics of the elderly, when crossing roads, especially focusing on the characteristics of pedestrians and vehicles. Cross-sectional data was collected from six different sites in two regions and the following results was identified. First, at road crossings, 528 cases(84.3%) out of 626 conflict situations of the elderly and 303 cases(63.3%) out of 478 conflict situations of the non-elderly pedestrians were found to be dangerous, respectively. The elderly tend to face a statistically significant risk of 3.11 times higher than that of non-elderly people. Second, 519 cases(82.9%) of jaywalking occurred in 626 conflict cases of the elderly and 375 cases(78.5%) of jaywalking in 478 conflict events of non-elderly persons, which indicates the elderly's 1.34 times higher trend compared with the non-elderly's. Third, the pedestrian safety margin (PSM) analysis showed that the PSM of the elderly and the non-elderly were 3.33 seconds and 4.04 seconds respectively, which is 17.5% high. Fourth, the difference in pedestrian safety interval was examined by dividing the speed of approaching vehicle into less than 30km/h, above 30km/h and less than 50km/h, and over 50km/h. There was no significant difference between the PSM of coming vehicles with the speed less than 30km/h and the PSM of approaching with the speed 30km/h~50km/h, but the conflicts with vehicle of the speed above 50km/h show significantly lower PSM than with vehicle speed of 30km/h~50km/h. Finally, when the risk threshold is set to less than 2.5 seconds, the analysis shows that older pedestrians tend to cross roads dangerously 1.59~2.53 times than younger pedestrians. The results set forth here can be used as a basis for constructing the elderly safety measures at present and a potential basis for autonomous vehicle safety application in the future for solving the issue of the difference in crossing behavior between elderly and non-elderly pedestrians.

A Study on the Design Improvement of Street Facilities in Jeollabuk-do Province (전라북도 가로시설물의 디자인 제고를 위한 연구)

  • This study reveals the absence of standard design guidelines by region through investigation and analysis centered on public design cases by region in Jeollabuk-do and design elements that can reflect the integration, identity, and diversity of public design in each region by five regions. Through this, the following conclusions could be obtained. First, to improve the quality of street facilities in Jeollabuk-do, the design elements (design motif, color, pattern) applicable to the standard design were analyzed by dividing them into five regions. As a design motif, it was possible to extract patterns containing straight lines, sophistication, dignity, and smartness. In the Northeast region, it is comfortable with the motif of the mountain ridge reflecting geographical characteristics, and it can be extracted elements that contain warm and natural colors. In the southeastern region, patterns that reflect design elements were extracted by applying safe, lively, and peaceful colors with the design motif of curves that blend nature and agriculture. In the southwestern region, design pattern elements that highlight nature, history, and culture were extracted with various cultural assets and natural greenery as motifs. Lastly, in the Saemangeum region, the ocean flow and greenery could be used as a design motif to reflect a positive, clear, future-oriented image in the design spot zones by region. Second, based on the standard design elements (design motive, color, pattern) by region extracted for the standard design development of street facilities in each region in Jeollabuk-do, an integrated zone(Form, structure, material, color, functional element) to which regional design guidelines can be applied. Third, an integrated zone (form, structure, material, color, functional elements) was composed. In addition, design spot zones (patterns and colors in city and county units) that can contain the diversity and identity of each region were designated.
