A single specimen of the ophichthid Muraenichthys gymnopterus (254.6 mm TL) was collected from the middle Yellow Sea off Incheon, Korea. It represents the first record of the species, the genus, and the subfamily from Korea. This species is characterized by the following combination of characters: a constricted midlateral gill opening; dorsal fin origin before anus, closer to the anus than to the gill opening; blunt teeth, jaw teeth in bands, and multiserial dentition; third preopercular pore present; single infraorbital pore between anterior and posterior nostrils; brownish colour; depth and width of gill opening 43.2 times and 33.7~65.3 times in total length, respectively; eye diameter 15.0~31.0 times in head length and total vertebrae 154~161. New Korean names are proposed, "Gaet-mul-baem-a-gwa" for the subfamily Myrophinae, "Gaet-mul-baem-sok" for the genus Muraenichthys, and "Gaet-mul-baem" for M. gymnopterus.
Background: Pain, limitations in opening, asymmetrical jaw movements, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds are the most common findings in temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), which causes excruciating pain, inflammation of the surrounding muscles, posterior fibers, and synovial fluid. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of ultrasound heat therapy and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in reducing TMD-related pain. Methods: This prospective study included 42 patients (age range, 25-45 years), who were divided into two groups of 21 patients each. All patients were prescribed a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) twice a day for 5 days for temporary relief of pain prior to the commencement of treatment. Patients were kept on a soft diet and asked to restrict mouth opening during the same period. Fifteen sessions of LLLT (Group A) or ultrasound therapy (Group B) were administered to the affected side. Results: Post-therapy, the mean visual analog scale score for group A and group B was 4.81 (2.01) and 6.19 (1.20), respectively; the difference was statistically significant and favoring the LLLT group. Similarly, the mean mouth opening for group A and group B was 3.99 (0.40) and 3.65 (0.41), respectively; the difference was statistically significant and favoring the LLLT group. Conclusion: Our study recommends LLLT for treating TMD-related pain with no underlying bony pathology.
Lateral cephalometric X-ray films in maximal intercuspation and maximal opening of 68 children were taken and analyzed to examine the pattern of condylar movement and to study the relationship between opening movement and morphologic factors of craniofacial skeleton. The results were as follows : 1. The mean value of maximal opening capacity was 47.1mm, condylar moving distance was 18.1mm, horizontal condyle movement was 17.5mm, vertical condyle movement was 3.8mm and condylar moving angle was $13.1^{\circ}$. 2. The maximal opening capacity had positive relationship with the length of anterior cranial base, mandible and maxillary complex and with posterior facial height and had negative relationship with articular angle, sagittal jaw relationship. 3. Vertical condyle movement and condylar moving angle had positive relationship with articular angle and had negative relationship with gonial angle. 4. Horizontal condyle movement and condylar moving distance had positive relationship with the length of maxillary complex.

The purpose of this study is to know the value of the photographic subtraction technic in the transcranial oblique lateral projection of the TMJ. The author examined the transcranial oblique lateral projection radiographs which comprise 50 cases of 32 persons, compared the transcranial oblique lateral projection films and those subtraction films. The following results were obtained. 1) The condyle at closed jaw position had showed a reversed tone image, but the condyle at the opening position had showed a re-reversed ordinary image. Both condyles had showed one subtraction film because radiographic interpretation of TMJ was easy. 2) On 50 cases of subtraction films, 46 cases had showed same radiographic images compared with trascranial oblique lateral projection films. Four cases (3 cases of erosion, 1 cases of sclerosis) had showed additional changes of images so that capability of interpretation was improved.

Congenital syngnathia refers to the fusion of bony tissues, a rare disorder with only 41 cases reported in the international literature from 1936 to 2009. The occurrence of syngnathia without any other associated systemic disease or congenital anomaly is extremely rare. This report presents a case of congenital syngnathia with unilateral maxillomandibular bony adhesion without any other oral or maxillofacial anomaly. No recommended protocol for surgery exists due to the rarity of the disorder. There is a very low survival rate for the few patients who have forgone surgical management. This case describes a 74-year-old female patient who was suffering from limitation of mouth opening and was subsequently diagnosed with congenital syngnathia. The surgical staff performed separation surgery and reconstructed the malformed oral vestibule and cheek using the radial forearm free flap operation.
Temporomandibular disorders typically present findings of limited or asymmetric patterns of jaw opening and joint sounds usually described as clicking, popping, grating, or crepitus. Recently, patients with temporomandibular disorders have received an increasingly aggressive treatment with a greater emphasis on surgical and dental reconstruction. Scientific studies have not clearly identified the specific causes of the temporomandibular disorders and therefore some of the treatments are empiric, without a firm scientific foundation. We carried out a study on the patients of pain clinic OPD and concluded that the causes of the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) pain are the prolonged contraction of the muscles of mastication, especially the masseter muscle. Therefore, the spasmolytic treatment of masseter muscle would be a better treatment for TMJ syndrome rather than the surgical and dental reconstruction.

Osteoid osteomas are benign skeletal neoplasms that are commonly encountered in the bones of the lower extremities, but are exceedingly rare in jaw bones with a prevalence of less than 1%. This unique clinical entity is usually seen in younger individuals, with nocturnal pain and swelling as its characteristic clinical manifestations. The size of the lesion is rarely found to be more than 2 cm. We hereby report a rare case of osteoid osteoma originating from the neck of the mandibular condyle that grew to large enough proportions to result in conductive hearing loss in addition to pain, swelling and restricted mouth opening. In addition, an effort has been made to review all the documented cases of osteoid osteomas of the jaws that have been published in the literature thus far.
Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is a form of focal dystonia that affects the masticatory, facial and lingual muscles in any variety of combinations, which results in repetitive involuntary and possibly painful jaw opening, closing, deviation or a combination of these movements. This study aimed to investigate clinical features and treatment type of OMD patients. By retrospective chart review, the study was conducted to consecutive OMD patients who visited a department of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic in a university dental hospital during Aug 2007 to Apr 2010. 78 OMD patients were identified with female preponderance (M:F=1:3.6) and a mean age of 72 years. Their mean duration of OMD was about 10 months. The most common chief complaints at the first visit was jaw ache, followed by uncontrolled, repetitive movement of the jaw and/or oral tissues, pain in the oral region(p=0.000). The most common subtype of OMD was lateral jaw-deviation dystonia, followed by combination and jaw-closing dystonia(p=0.001). While no apparent cause was recognized in over 60% of the OMD patients, peripheral trauma including dental treatment such as prosthetic treatment and extraction was the most frequently reported as precipitating factor(p=0.000). Medication was the 1st line therapy for our patients and anxiolytics such as clonazepam was given to most of them. Based on the results of this study, OMD is the disease of the elderly, particularly of women and causes orofacial pain and compromises function of orofacial region. Some patients considered dental treatment a precipitating factor. Dentists, therefore, should have knowledge of symptoms and treatment of OMD.

This study examined the effects of the forward head posture on the maximum mouth opening of the jaw joint and the muscle activity and asymmetry of the temporalis and masseter. The craniovertebral angle was measured in 50 subjects (23.10±2.73 years) who met the selection requirements of the study. The maximum mouth opening, muscle activity, and muscle asymmetry were measured by reducing 0%, 10%, and 20%. As the craniovertebral angle decreased, the maximum mouth opening decreased (p<.001), the muscle activity of the right and left temporalis decreased (p<.001), and the muscle activity of the left temporalis also decreased. (p<.01). The asymmetry rate of the added muscles of the left and right temporalis, left and right temporalis, and masseter increased according to the change in condition (p<.01). The results of this study are expected to help establish a treatment strategy and comprehensive diagnosis for the temporomandibular joint and present a theoretical basis of manual therapy and therapeutic exercises used for the treatment of TMD.

Some odontogenic infections erode into fascial spaces directly and spread toward lymphatic tissues and blood streams. The principal maxillary primary spaces are the canine, buccal, and infratemporal space, the next secondary spaces are the masseteric, temporal and pharygeal space. As a result of the infection, trismus and orocutaneous fistula may be occurred. Trismus is owing to conditions not associated with temporomandibular joint itself and may be of myogenic, neurogenic, or psychogenic nature. Muscular trismus is due to infection adjacent to the elevator muscles of the jaw. The four principles of treatment of infection are as follows: (1) removal of the cause, (2) establishment of drainage, (3) institution of antibiotic therapy, and (4) provision of supportive care, including rest, nutrition and physiotherapy. Jaw physiotherapy is necessary to increase the amount of mouth opening and regain normal muscle tone. If proper care of odontogenic infection could be attained, the orocutaneous fistula will heal and close spontaneously by wound contraction mechanism of natural homeostatic response. This is a case report of the care of trismus and orocutaneous fistula due to fascial space abscess by advanced odontogenic infection in a physically disabled patient.
