In the Japanese language, there is a phonological contrast between not only initial stops, but also non initial in voiced and voiceless sounds. But in the Korean language, voiced sounds do not appear in the initial. Due to this, pronunciation of voiced sounds in the initial will be difficult for Korean. Through this research, I analyzed the minimal pairs by voiced/voiceless sounds of Japanese and Korean, and perception experiment in which Japanese listened to Korean speakers' pronunciations. Japanese pronunciations showed distinct acoustic differences between voiced and voiceless stops, especially in VOT. The duration of vowels after voiced stops was longer than that of voiceless ones. Vowel pitches after voiceless stops were higher. On the other hands, Korean showed three patterns of voiced sounds. There were-VOT values as native speakers, +VOT, and nasal formant tended to occur before prenasalized stops. Koreans pronounced voiceless sounds in strong aspirated, unaspirated, or tense sounds. Finally, Japanese judged sounds with not only -VOT values and prenasalized, but also with +VOT values as voiced. This suggests that we may not consider VOT values as the unique feature of voicing, and that such other phonetic characteristics as the following vowel lengthening should be included here.
The objective of this study was to analyze the acoustic patterns of Japanese /t/ produced by 40 Korean speakers in order to find an effective method of teaching it to Koreans. The experimental data consisted of 400 /t/ phonemes in word initial or non-initial positions of 10 words. Informants were in their twenties and raised in Daejeon and the surrounding area. Results showed that there were distinctive trends in duration and intensity of the major and non-major groups productions. Both groups pronounced the phoneme longer than the native speakers with more open mouths but with less loudness. The formant analysis showed that F1 values of the Japanese /t/ pronounced by Japanese major group were lower than those of the non-major. Its F2 values by the major group were higher than those of the non-major, which would suggest that the Koreans produced the tongue blade in more frontal position than the native speakers.
This study was conducted to investigate the applicability of gamma irradiation for improving the quality of paprika and Japanese apricot extract-treated nitrite free pork jerky. Pork jerky was gamma-irradiated at 0, 3, 5, 7 and 10 kGy and physiochemical properties such as proximate composition, 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) values, color stability, texture, and sensory property were then evaluated. The results showed that the treatment of paprika and Japanese apricot extract to the pork jerky increased Hunter color value and texture property and at the same time decreased TBARS values. When gamma irradiated, natural pigment extract-treated pork jerky did not produce any change in its proximate composition (moisture, crude protein, crude lipid contents), and TBARS values. However, the redness (a-value) of pork jerky increased as the irradiation dose increased, whereas shear force of pork jerky was decreased. Sensory result showed that gamma irradiation induced to decrease the sensory scores. Therefore, these results suggest that gamma irradiation and the addition of paprika and Japanese apricot extracts could be an effective mean to improve color and texture of restructured pork jerky without use of nitrite.
This study investigated body-related values, body-esteem, and the relationship between them based on the survey data drawn from female college students in three East Asian countries(Korea, Japan, and China). 168 Korean, 108 Chinese, and 152 Japanese female college students responded to questions designed to measure four sorts of body values (operability, inclination, locus of evaluation, and social utility) and four dimensions of body esteem (appearance, weight, health, overall). The results showed that body-related values and body-esteem differ among three countries. Japanese showed the highest acceptance level for the voluntary body alteration(operability), while chinese scored the lowest. Inclination to body appearance over health was higher in Korean than in Japanese and in Chinese. Korean also evaluated the importance of body appearance and its social utility the highest, followed by Japanese and Chinese. There were dramatic differences in body esteem between Korean and Japanese. Regarding body-esteem, Korean showed the highest appearance-esteem, but the health-esteem was the lowest. On the contrary, Japanese showed the highest health-esteem, but the appearance-esteem was lowest. Chinese showed the highest weight-esteem. Four sorts of body values showed significant correlations with appearance-esteem and weight-esteem, respectively but not with health-esteem. Overall, the result supported the prediction that different political, social, and economic backdrops in three countries would be related with different body-related values and body esteem in the female college students.
CKP isoenzymes have a high level of efficaciousness as diagnostic and prognostic aids in various diseases. There is not any report on the total activity of CPK of non-human primates, let alone CPK isoenzyme patterns, in Korea. In this study, total activities and isoenzyme patterns of CPK were measured to obtain their reference values in domestically reared common marmosets, crab-eating macaques and Japanese macaques. We observed remarkable different values of serum total CPK from the primates used in this experiment. Serum CPK activities of Japanese macaques and crab-eating macaques were 275.8$\pm$158.1 IU/l and 396.7$\pm$697.4 IU/l, respectively, whereas those of common marmosets showed much higher value of 618.8$\pm$1,117.6 IU/l. In all common marmosets and crab-eating macaques, only CPK$_3$ ws observed. In five out of eight Japanese macaques, CPK$_3$ was the sole fraction but two animals showed CPK$_1$ and CPK$_3$ isoenzymes, and the remaining one had CPK$_2$ and CPK$_3$ fractions. There were some discrepancies in the pattern and ratio of isoenzyme fractions in Japanese macaques. In conclusion, values such as CPK and CPK isoenzyme patterns of investigated for the first time form non-human primates reared in Korea, could be reference values for the optimal diagnosis and therapy diseases of the corresponding animal species.
The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of assignment design values according to domestic softwood structural lumber grading rules. Allowable stresses for visually graded lumber were determined from basic data on small. clear specimens. The data corrected for variability such as natural defects and other factors. The procedure adopted by Japan was used for assigning allowable design values. Strength ratios in relation to each defect were taken from ASTM D 245-81. Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.), Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis Gordon) and Needle fir(Abies holophylla Max) were applied to this study. The calculated allowable stresses were same in Korean pine and Korean red pine. These values were highest in Japanese larch lowest in Needle fir. So, it is desirable for these species to be classified into different catagories Species Group. However, accurate comparison in design values on lumber grading rules among U.S., Japan and Korea was somewhat difficult. And full scale testing will be necessary for accurate determination of the correction factors to setting up design values.
In this paper, 1 will try to examine the aspects of formants, based on the LPC analysis. In this analysis, five Japanese vowels (a, i, u, e, o) will experience two kinds of experiments: vowels in isolated forms, and vowels in carrier sentences. The analysis results of Japanese vowels of the Japanese natives show a peculiar feature that Japanese vowels form respective vowel groups. Each Japanese vowel makes a statistically significant difference. In the Fl analysis of the vowels grouped by the informant's sex, Japanese vowel (a) shows the greatest standard deviation without regard to the informant's sex. In the F2 analysis of Japanese vowels, each vowel has a statistically significant difference. The fact that the male's [u] shows great standard deviation means that there is a great difference of the frontness of the tongue among the Japanese males in articulating [u]. Isolated vowels and carried vowels show statistically little significance between Fl and F2 frequency values. In another contrastive analysis between the isolated vowel group and the carried vowel group, whether a vowel is articulated in isolation or in a sentence appears to have little effect on its formant frequency.
From the cooking data, Japanese rice showed higher water uptake but lower expansion volume, pH and iodine blue value than those of Korean rice. Japanese rice had higher maximum viscosity, breakdown viscosity and pasting temperature but lower final viscosity and setback viscosity than those of Korean rice by RVA analysis. Japanese rice had higher LC (low compression) hardness, U stickiness and HC (high compression) stickiness, LC balance and HC balance, but had lower HC hardness and thickness in the tensipresser data. Also Japanese rice had higher stickiness and balance, and lower hardness from the texturometer analysis. Japanese rice showed higher a cooked taste score than that of the Satake cooked taste machine. The various mean values of Japanese rice after cooking showed better cooking characteristics than the Korean rice. These results might be caused because Japanese rice had a little lower amylose and protein content, but higher tat acidity content.
Flexural properties were investigated on clear specimens made from small diameter thinned trees of pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.), Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.), and sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima Carr.). MOR and MOE values of small clear specimen were depended on the species. The highest density of sawtooth oak shows the highest values of MOR and MOE. However, the lowest density of Japanese larch shows the lowest values of MOR. It was also shown that flexural properties could be predicted by stress wave MOE, since the correlations between stress wave MOE and flexural properties were relatively good.

To evaluate direct and maternal effects on calf market weight (CMW) and carcass weight (CW) in Japanese Black cattle under an animal model, genetic parameters were estimated using 51,320 records of CMW and 11,944 records of CW, respectively. Direct and maternal heritabilities, and direct-maternal genetic correlation were estimated to be 0.22, 0.06 and 0.27 for CMW, and 0.23, 0.12 and -0.40 for CW, respectively. Correlation coefficient between maternal breeding values for CMW and CW was 0.521 for 157 sires appeared in both CMW and CW data sets. These results suggest that the maternal genetic effect on pre-weaning growth carries over to carcass weight. Maternal breeding values for both calf market weight and carcass weight could be used as the indicator traits of maternal ability in Japanese Black cattle.
