Estimation and Validation of Taper Equations for Three Major Coniferous Species in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang Provinces of South Korea

  • This study was carried out to estimate the parameters of stem taper functions, to figure out the best taper model by species, and to compare with previous studies by species, targeting on the stemmed tree samples collected from the Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora), Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis), and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi ) stands in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces of South Korea. The seven widely used models were applied in this study, and Muhairwe 1999 model for Korean red pine and Korean white pine and Kozak 2002 model for Japanese larch were evaluated as the best model for each species according to the fit statistics and the predicted stem form comparison. In addition, the predicted diameter was suitably fitted when comparing the previous studies, and the values were more appropriate following stem taper according to neiloid, paraboloid, and cone parts by species. Consequently, the estimation of this study was considered to represent the stem taper well. When comparing stem taper of three species, the diameter was largest in Korean white pine. Overall, the taper models of this study are judged to be useful for estimating stem form and volume computation of Korean red pine, Korean white pine, and Japanese larch.

Phenolic Compounds from Japanese anise (Illicium anisatum L.) Twigs

  • Japanese anise (Illicium anisatum L.) twigs were collected and ground after drying, then immersed with 50% aqueous acetone for 3 days. After filtration, the extracts were fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform ($CHCl_3$), ethylacetate (EtOAc) and $H_2O$, and then freeze-dried after condensation. A portion of EtOAc soluble fraction (5.7 g) was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column with various aqueous $MeOH-H_2O$. Compound 2 and compound 3 were isolated from fraction 8 and 5, respectively. Compound 1 and compound 4 were isolated after rechromatography of fraction 7. The isolated compounds were elucidated as (+)-catechin (1), taxifolin (2), taxifolin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-(+)-xylopyranose (3) and quercitrin (4) by spectral and literature data, and by comparison with the authentic samples. Of the isolated compounds, taxifolin (2), taxifolin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-(+)-D-xylopyranose (3) and quercitrin (4) were isolated, for the first time, from the extracts of japanese anise twigs.

Carbon and Nitrogen Distribution of Tree Components in Larix kaempferi Carriere and Quercus variabilis Blume Stands in Gyeongnam Province

  • This study was conducted to determine the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) distribution within tree components (i.e., stem, branches, leaves, and roots) of the Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carriere) plantation and natural oriental cork oak (Quercus variabilis Blume) stands. Fifteen Japanese larch and 15 oriental cork oak trees were destructively sampled to compare the C and N stocks in the components of the trees from three different regions-Hadong-gun, Hamyang-gun and Sancheong-gun-in Gyeongnam Province, South Korea. Species-specific allometric equations were developed to estimate the C and N contents in the tree components based on the diameter at breast height (DBH). There were differences in mean C and N concentrations between the Japanese larch and the oriental cork oak. The mean C concentrations of the tree componentswere significantly higher in Japanese larch than in oriental cork oak; whereas, the N concentration in the stems was significantly lower in Japanese larch than in oriental cork oak. The allometric equations developed for C and N content were significant (p < 0.05) with a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 0.76 to 0.99. The C and N stocks in the tree components do not appear to be affected by the species such as Japanese larch plantations and oriental cork oak stands. This study emphasizes the importance of C and N concentrations to estimate the C and N distribution according to tree components in different tree species.

Biological Pretreatment of Softwood Pinus densiflora by Three White Rot Fungi

  • The effects of biological pretreatment on the Japanese red pine Pinus densiflora, was evaluated after exposure to three white rot fungi Ceriporia lacerata, Stereum hirsutum, and Polyporus brumalis. Change in chemical composition, structural modification, and their susceptibility to enzymatic saccharification in the degraded wood were analyzed. Of the three white rot fungi tested, S. hirsutum selectively degraded the lignin of this sortwood rather than the holocellulose component. After eight weeks of pretreatment with S. hirsutum, total weight loss was 10.7%, while lignin loss was the highest at 14.52% among the tested samples. However, holocellulose loss was lower at 7.81 % compared to those of C. lacerata and P. brumalis. Extracelluar enzymes from S. hirsutum showed higher activity of ligninase and lower activity of cellulase than those from other white rot fungi. Thus, total weight loss and changes in chemical composition of the Japanese red pine was well correlated with the enzyme activities related with lignin- and cellulose degradation in these fungi. Based on the data obtained from analysis of physical characterization of degraded wood by X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) and pore size distribution, S. hirsutum was considered as an effective potential fungus for biological pretreatment. In particular, the increase of available pore size of over 120 nm in pretreated wood powder with S. hirsutum made enzymes accessible for further enzymatic saccharification. When Japanese red pine chips treated with S. hirsutum were enzymatically saccharified using commercial enzymes (Cellulclast 1.5 L and Novozyme 188), sugar yield was greatly increased (21.01 %) compared to non-pre treated control samples, indicating that white rot fungus S. hirsutum provides an effective process in increasing sugar yield from woody biomass.

DNA 표지를 이용한 채종원내 소나무의 교배양식 분석 (Mating System of Japanese Red Pines in Seed Orchard Using DNA Markers)

  • To assess parameters of mating system in seed orchard, such as outcrossing rates, number of potential pollen contributors, and degree of pollen contamination, seeds, produced in '77 plot of the Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora S et Z) seed orchard at Anmyeon island, were collected in 2007 and analysed by nSSR and cpSSR markers. Estimates of outcrossing rates ranged from 91.2 to 100% (mean 97.7%) on the basis of the analysis of cpSSR haplotypes and from 81.6 to 100% (mean 95.3%) on the basis of the analysis of nSSR genotypes. By cross checking of both DNA markers, seeds, presumed to be products of self pollination on the basis of single marker, were confirmed as outcrossed seeds, which resulted in cumulative outcrossing rates of 98.9%. On the basis of pooled cpSSR haplotype of each seed, the number of pollen contributors and paternal contribution rates were estimated as 14.8 and 0.512, respectively. In conclusion, considering pretty high level of outcrossing rates observed in a seed orchard, good genetic potential of the seeds, produced in '77 plot of the seed orchard of Japanese red pines at Anmyeon island, may be guaranteed. Investigated results from the analysis of mating system of Japanese red pines in a '77 plot of the seed orchard may also be expected to provide useful information for the management and establishment of the seed orchard of the progressive generation.

삼나무조림지(造林地)의 입목(立木) 간재적(幹材積) 추정(推定)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Estimation of Individual Tree Volumes for the Japanese Red Cedar Plantations)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 1920년대부터 우리나라 남부지방에 대단위로 조림된 삼나무(Cryptomeria japonica D. Don)조림지를 대상으로 하여 최적의 간재적추정식을 개발코자 하였다. 남부지방의 대표적인 삼나무조림지인 6개 지역을 조사하였으며, 이들 지역에서 대표적인 31개의 표준목을 선발하여 수간석해를 실시하였다. 이 중 이용 가능한 29개체목에 대한 수간석해 자료를 이용하여 개발한 최적의 삼나무 재적추정식은 $V=-0.002908+0.000125D^{1.907114}H^{0.645131}$이 제시되었다. 이 식을 이용하여 간재적 실측치와 추정치를 사용한 동시 F-검정(절편=0와 기울기=1)을 실시한 결과, 통계적으로 유의성을 나타내지 않았다(p=0.1936). 따라서 본 연구에서 제시된 간재적 추정식은 남부지방에 조림된 삼나무의 입목 간재적표조제와 경영에 필요한 기초적 자료를 제공해 줄 것으로 판단된다.

  • 이 연구의 목적은 한국의 임정에 큰 영향을 끼친 "조선임정계획(朝鮮林政計劃)"의 요존국유림 관련부분을 중심으로 하여 1926년부터 1936년까지의 일제의 한국 국유림정책을 파악하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 동시기 국유림정책을 수립하는데 중요한 역할을 담당하였던 조선임정계획(朝鮮林政計劃)의 계획과 실적을 비교하여 그 성격을 도출하였다. 조선임정계획은 1)제1차 세계대전 이후 목재수요의 급증에 대비하기 위해 2)분산된 국유림관리조직의 통합을 위해 3)일본에서의 영림국서제도(營林局署制度)의 설치에 영향을 받아 만들어졌다. 이 연구를 통해 1)수입의 보속만을 추구한 사업안 2)10년만에 두배로 늘어난 벌채량 3)벌채적지의 13%만의 인공조림 4)산림축적의 감소가 대부분 국유림에서 이루어졌다는 점 5)영림서의 계속적인 축소 통폐합 6)국유림에서의 막대한 이득 등을 확인할 수 있었다. 즉 이러한 임정계획 및 실적을 통해, 1926년부터 1936년까지의 기간은 '보속적인 산림경영'을 추구했다기보다는 증벌을 통한 제국주의의 초과이윤을 실현한 '국유림 수탈정책'의 실현에 그 목적이 있었다는 것을 알 수 있다.

일본과 한국의 산림치유사업과 육성정책의 비교·연구 (A Comparative Study on the Forest Therapy Policies of Japan and Korea)

  • 일본과 한국은 산림의 건강증진 효과에 주목하고 산림치유사업을 전개하고 있으나 제도와 정책은 차이가 많다. 일본은 산림치유사업을 지자체와 주민이 운영하는 반면 한국은 산림청이 운영한다. 일본은 삼림세라피 기지 인증제를 이용해 삼림의과학적 증거에 바탕을 두고 산림치유의 질을 유지하면서 지자체와 주민의 경쟁적 참여를 유도하며, 산림치유사업자협회를 통해 인력을 양성하고 연구회가 운영방식을 개선한다. 반면 한국은 허가제에 기초해 법제 정비를 실시하였으나, 아직 치유의 숲 조성과 인력 양성이 초기단계에 있으며 운영방식도 체계화되어 있지 않다. 산림치유 육성정책은 일본의 경우 지역진흥 및 산촌활성화 정책과 중첩되어 자체 추진력이 약하지만, 한국의 경우는 산림서비스 확대라는 정책목표 아래 고유의 정책체계를 가짐으로써 강력히 추진되고 있다.

일제하(日帝下) 관습적(慣習的)인 산림이용권(山林利用權)의 해체과정(解體科程) (A Study on the Dissolving Process around the Customary Common Right to Forest Utilization in Korea under the Rule of Japanese Imperialism)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 오래전부터 인정되어온 산하주민(山下主民)들의 관습적인 산림이용권이 일제하 산림소유권의 재편과정을 겪으면서 어떻게 처리되었는가를 밝히는 데 있다. "어느 지역의 주민이 집합체의 관계로 촌락공유림(村落共有林)이나 타인의 토지에서 초목, 야생물 및 토사의 채취, 방목 기타의 수익을 하는 권리"로 정의할 수 있는 관습적인 산림이용권은 총유(總有)와 특수지역권(特殊地役權)으로 구분할 수 있으며, 그러한 권리가 적용되는 산림을 촌락공유림(村落共有林) 및 특수지역림(特殊地役林)으로 구분할 수 있다. 이러한 관습적인 산림이용권은 삼림법(森林法)(1908), 삼림령(森林令)(1911), 조선임야조사사업(朝鮮林野調査事業)(1917~1924) 및 조선특별연고삼림양여사업(朝鮮特別緣故森林讓與事業)(1926~1934)을 거치면서 그 권리가 사유(私有) 또는 공유(公有)로 전환 해체되었다. 특히, 조선특별연고삼림양여사업(朝鮮特別緣故森林讓與事業)의 결과 관습적인 산림이용권은 소유권과 이용행태의 측면에서 큰 변화를 초래했다. 즉, 소유권이 공유(共有)(연고(緣故) 포함)에서 사유(私有) 또는 공유(公有)로 전환되었고 관습적인 산림이용권의 핵심내용인 집합체로서의 공장이용권이 해체된 것이다.
