In Everland Zoological Gardens, the mortality by extrinsic cause in non-human primates during 1976∼1999 were retrospectively analyzed based on the clinical charts and/or autopsy reports. The number of deaths from extrinsic factor was 61 among a total of 161 monkeys which were died during that period. Among 61 monkeys of death from extrinsic factor, the number at a detailed cause were as follows: strangulation, 17(27.87%); accident fall, 15(24.59%); suffocation, 13(21.31%); drowning, 7(11.48%); death from pressure, 2(3.28%); collision, 2(3.28%); sunstroke, 1(64%); starvation, 1(1.64%); freezing to death, 1(1.64%); contusion, 1(1.64%). The number of deaths from extrinsic factor was 39 among a total of 81 squirrel monkeys which were died during that period. Among 39 squirrel monkeys of death from extrinsic factor, the number at a detailed cause were as follows; suffocation, 11(28.21%); accident fall, 8(20.51%); strangulation, 7(17.95%); drowning, 7(17.95%); death from pressure, 2(5.13%); starvation, 1(2.56%); collision, 1(2.56%). The number of deaths from extrinsic factor was 14 among a total of 50 Japanese macaque died during that period. Among 14 Japanese macaque from extrinsic factor, the number at a detailed cause were as follows; strangulation, 7(50.55%); accident fall, 6(42.85%); suffocation, 1(7.14%). It was considered that far facilities, adequate space and suitable indoor temperature are needed for the prevention of deaths of extrinsic cause at the monkey raising in zoological gardens or research center.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of implanted chitosan applied to surgically created wound in Japanese Macaque monkeys. 4 healthy Japanese Macaque monkeys were used. A 4 cm straight skin incision was made and undermined skin ($4{\times}4cm$) over on the 2 monkeys both sides of the dorsal midline, and a 4 cm circular skin incision was made on 2 monkeys both sides of the dorsal midline. One wound (left side) was implanted 1 mg (straight incision) and daily 0.2 mg (circular incision) of cotton type chitosan and the other wounds were treated with normal saline (3 ml) in monkeys. Each straight wound was closed with two interrupted sutures of 2-0 sutures. The monkey's circular skin incision is opened. At 14 days after initial wounding, each wound was taken for histological observations in monkeys. The inflammatory cells in the chitosan group are observed less than the control group, the collagen and the fibrin in the chitosan are observed more than the control group in monkeys. So the wound healing is moderately enhanced for chitosan treatment. The fibroblasts and the capillaries increased for chitosan treatment. The treatment of chitosan in wound is to promote healing.

An attenuated Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) clone SA-14-14-2(Vero) was obtained through successive adaptation of a primary cell adapted strain, SA-14-14-2(PDK) to Vero cell, a continuous line of monkey kidney cells. The virus titer reached above the 107 plaque forming unit (pfu) per mL of culture supernatant with 3 passages in Vero cells and was maintained close to this level in the further passages. The optimum temperature for the virus growth was $35^{\circ}C$. Growth pattern of the virus indicated that optimum time for the virus harvest is 4 days post infection and the virus accomplished rapid initial propagation even in medium containing no serum supplement. The roller bottle (RB) system and the spinner flask (SF) system using micro-carrier (Cytodex-1) for the JEV cultivation were explored. When RB, SF, and T-flask culture system were compared, there was no significant difference in virus yield. Furthermore, the results indicated that virus could be harvested multiple times from 3 days to 9 days post infection; neither severe cytopathic effect (CPE) in the infected cells nor the decrease in the titer was observed on duration of 9 days.

People are destined to live according to the time and fate after they are born. Man is connected with the idea that is called the Chinese zodiac sign related to one out of 12 animals, regardless of one's thought. This paper was written with the expectation that it will be a new turning point understanding the mutual influence and its changing process by catching the ethnic belief and emotion as well as its cultural background in the Asian Zone by investigating the meaning of the 12 Chinese zodiac shown in the folk painting from the viewpoint of folk lore including "Chinese zodiac sign" culture rooted in our daily lives. The animal 'Rat' has been lived well human beings accompanied by the fable or the nature, while the animal 'Ox' has been living together with human history. The 'Tiger' has been considered the 'Power retreating disease or a devil' to humans, which is the most frightening but near at hand. The 'Rabbit' in the fable is inculcating hope and ideals to humans. The imaginary 'Dragon' is rooted in the deep national belief, which is seated as 'Guardian god' of farming culture and mankind, while the 'Snake' is playing a role in protecting humans as the 'Sea God' in Tsushima and Jeju Island, and has been believed and followed in the deep mind of humans. The 'Horse' in the nomad culture has been adorned as the basic creature of nomadic society in the character of a psychic medium between the human and god or their 'Guardian god'. The ancient Japanese regarded 'Monkey' as holy, being connected with treasure. It infers a human's desire to borrow wisdom from 'Monkey'. 'Chicken' includes the meaning of a lucky sign connecting the sky and the human world by arranging together with humans. The 'Dog' is believed and followed as performing the function of a messenger connecting this world with the afterlife in the next world tale of shamanism. The 'Pig' also lives well with humans, being interpreted as fecundity. Although the meaning of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals has ethnic differences, all of them have been shared with humans, rooted in the human mind, being believed, and followed in human lives.
