The palace byeoljeon(別殿), the King's non-ceremonial space, were created as a space for the king to comfortably use and for the king to do what he wanted to do. The byeoljeon housed various types of spaces and were flexible in that they could be repurposed to meet the demands of the times. Nevertheless, their characteristic as palatial building created for the King's convenience has remained unchanged. In this study, we examine the process by which such royal spaces were created by focusing on the reconstruction of the Changdeokgung Huijeongdang during Japanese occupation period, with a view to continuity and the transformation process. The reconstruction of Huijeongdang at the time may be considered along internal and external characteristics. Internally, Huijeongdang connected the symbolism of the king's space as the palace byeoljeon. Externally, Huijeongdang is characterized by its mixture of traditional and western style, where western style structures were housed within traditional buildings. The plans for the block of Huijeongdang also included the coexistence of traditional building, western style building, and mixture of traditional and western style building. This reflects the characteristic continuity of the byeoljeon as well as the architectural techniques of the time, manifested together within a specific spatial block.

In this study we take a closer look at the diseases that afflicted Japanese police officers who were stationed in a remote mountainous region of Taiwan from 1921 to 1944. Samples were taken from the latrine at the Huabanuo police outpost, and analyzed for the eggs of intestinal parasites, using microscopy and ELISA. The eggs of Eurytrema sp., (possibly E. pancreaticum), whipworm and roundworm were shown to be present. True infection with Eurytrema would indicate that the policemen ate uncooked grasshoppers and crickets infected with the parasite. However, false parasitism might also occur if the policemen ate the uncooked intestines of infected cattle, and the Eurytrema eggs passed through the human intestines. These findings provide an insight into the diet and health of the Japanese colonists in Taiwan nearly a century ago.
The purpose of this research was influenced by the historical background of Japanese modern architecture by the circulation of Kuma Kengo's architectural works and he wanted to look at the values and directions he was pursuing and how they were expressed in his works. The results of the review are summarized as follows. First, metabolism was developed as a reaction of modernism in modern architecture, focusing on growth through infinite reproduction by looking at architecture and cities as organisms and by using unit space as cells. Kuma Kengo, on the other hand, argues that focusing on the possibility of decimation of unit members by sequencing the elements that make up the space smaller than the unit space is closer to an ecological architecture. Second, what Kuma Kengo says is "erase the architecture" that is naturally related to the environment and disappears when its use is exhausted. His argument is expressed in individual architectural works through 'visual erase', 'particle painting of materials' and 'independence through dependency.' Through this, Kuma Kengo's ecological architectural languages were influenced by the ecological causes of metabolism, but they differed from the perspective of seeing architectural circulation as an organism. If metabolism was intended to realize circulation with growth potential based on the module of unit space, Kuma Kengo sought to implement circulation with the extinction of the unit members of space.
This study was conducted to track the appearance of Aguijjim and its popularity on the national level. Furthermore, changes in the monkfish recipe and how they impacted the consumption of monkfish were investigated. It is assumed that monkfish was consumed by Japanese in Korea during the Japanese colonial era. After liberation, people cooked the fish as soup. In the 1960s, Aguijjim was invented in Masan. There is great controversy regarding how the dish was born. It has been asserted that it was created by one specific person, that refugees with insufficient food developed, and that it is just an advancement of Bugeojjim. Aguijjim restaurants began to appear in Seoul in the 1970s, and in the 1990s streets full of Aguijjim restaurants formed. Moreover, popular music and literature referenced Aguijjim in the late 1990s. As Aguijjim has developed and the formation of Aguijjim street have combined, the consumption of monkfish has increased drastically, leading to its import. As cooking methods have transformed, the fish with the unpleasant look which was thrown out in the past, have dramatically gained public interest. 'Masan Aguijjim' became an independent brand that represents a local food that has also been nationalized in a short amount of time.
The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of domestic American casual fashion trends using big data text mining analysis. 108,524 posts and 2,038,999 extracted keywords from Naver and Daum related to American casual fashion in the past 5 years were collected and refined by the Textom program, and frequency analysis, word cloud, N-gram, centrality analysis, and CONCOR analysis were performed. The frequency analysis, 'vintage', 'style', 'daily look', 'coordination', 'workwear', 'men's wear' appeared as the main keywords. The main nationality of the representative brands was Japanese, followed by American, Korean, and others. As a result of the CONCOR analysis, four clusters were derived: "general American casual trend", "vintage taste", "direct sales mania", and "American styling". This study results showed that Japanese American casual clothes are influenced by American casual clothes, and American casual fashion in Korea, which has been reinterpreted, is completed with various coordination and creative styles such as workwear, street, military, classic, etc., focusing on items and brands. Looks were worn and shared on social networks, and the existence of an active consumer group and market potential to obtain genuine products, ranging from second-hand transactions for limited edition vintages to individual transactions were also confirmed. The significance of this study is that it presented the characteristics of American casual fashion trends academically based on online text data that the public actually uses because it has been spread by the public.
Contemporary Buddhist scholarship in Korea has been strongly affected by its origins in the Victorian era, when Western religious scholars sought to rationalize and historicize the study of religion. Modern Korean scholars, trained within the Western scholarly paradigm, share this prejudice which tends toward the rational. The result is a skewed understanding of Buddhism, emphasizing its philosophical and theoretical aspects at the expense of seemingly "irrational" religious elements based on the direct experience of meditation practice. This paper seeks to look at the historical context in which modern Korean Buddhist scholarship had been shaped during the colonial period of Japan. Two case studies will be examined particularly in the light of post-colonial perspectives of Buddhist studies: the case of Jonghong Bak(1903-1976) and the case of Donghwa Gim(1902-1980), two pioneering scholars in the field of Buddhist studies. They share similarities as well as differences. Both were born and active at almost the same period, during which Korean peninsula experienced modernization forced upon by Japanese colonialism. And thus, the experience of colonialism and modernization brought them into conflict between tradition and modernity. Their responses, however, were different. Pak, originally trained in Western philosophy, especially German philosophy, wanted to study Korean Buddhism in the context of the so-called Korean Philosophy per se. He was motivated to seek for the national and cultural identity of Korea. And thus his scholarship on Korean Buddhism naturally led him to look for an original Korean Buddhism distinct from the Buddhism of India, China and Japan. On the other hand, Gim, who became a monk in his youth, later went to Japan for college where he was exposed to modern Buddhist scholarship. He was the first to introduce modern Buddhist scholarship to Korea, and since then, contemporary Korean Buddhist scholarship owes much to his contributions. Despite his contributions to contemporary Korean Buddhist scholarship, if we look at his efforts in the light of post-colonial perspective, his ideas need to be reevaluate.
Korean-Japanese architect Itami Jun that proceeded with primeval architecture based on analogue ideas in the digital era realizing nomad architecture is delivering a totally different meaning in the modern time. Not like the Japanese architectural community equipped with rich technologies showed state-of-the-art architecture after 1980s, Itami Jun' formative consciousness intending to assimilate nature from the original position of things is thought to have started from the relationship with Korean-Japanese painters leading MONO-HA desiring to look at the world as it is and approach the source of existence. The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial characteristics from the viewpoint of 'Theory of Meeting' which is the essence of the work theory of Lee UFan that made the theoretical foundation of MONO-HA to understand Itami Jun's architectural space in the ideological aspect. Although the characteristics of marginal men appearing in Itami Jun's architectural space as others located on the boundary between Korea and Japan, art and architecture, and functions are valuable research objects, they have not been studied in the aspect of source, so it is needed to research his works and the source of the spatial ideas that led his works. Based on Theory of Meeting claiming that the world becomes the place of experience by the medium of objet which is the structure of meeting, and that human beings can meet the truly opened world by self-awareness through body, the expressive characteristics of Itami Jun's interior space was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it turned out that Itami Jun's interior space actively expressed Theory of Meeting on the unity of structure and space, and on the trans-boundary by the medium of objet. Conclusively, this study suggests that, in the reality of the modern interior design full of technology-intensive designs, analogue approach moving in the opposite way from technologies could be a better expressive method of design delivering the fundamental human emotions.
Geisha's gorgeous kimonos and grotesque make-up was the object of envy to Japanese women. There is a line in the movie like "Kimonos to the Geisha is the same as colors to the painter." Likewise, splendid patterns and colorful kimonos were an indispensible method or symbol for showing their artistic accomplishments. The purpose of this study is to investigate concept and origin of Geisha and their dress and decoration, analyze the dress of the people which appear in the movie, , arrange the expression of Geisha's dress as a movie costume, compare the difference of the dress by the career of Geisha and look back the disappearing aesthetic sense of Geisha. First, since Geisha appeared for the first time in Kyoto in 1751, it has become the world-wide representative of Japanese woman's images so that its existence oneself has become the tradition. Second, Geisha created fashion of various clothes, adornments, and hair styles as a creator of the popularity. Third, the strict regulation without exception is applied in Geisha's clothing, make-up, and motion tuned Samisen, Japanese traditional strings, and there is some difference in their hair style and dress by age of Maiko. Fourth, it is famous for unique make-up that Geisha makes up their faces, necks, and shoulders white, newly paints eyes, nose, lip line like drawing a picture in a pure white paper. Geishas put a little make-up as they have a higher position. Fifth, a heroin, Chiyo, shows clothing as a maid, an apprentice Geisha-Maiko- and a formal Geisha according to time flow. The length of kimono, textures, and hair decorations are longer, more splendid, and are more various as time goes. On the other hand, her make-up is lighter.
The purpose of this study is to examine the recent various developments of men's fashion by analyzing how exotic tastes were presented in men's modern fashion from 2001 to 2010. For this purpose, a researcher reviewed relevant studies to identify the styles of exotic tastes that were reflected in men's modern fashion specifically in Chinese, Japanese, Indian, East Asian, American, North American and South American styles. Findings of this study is summarized as follows. Main examples of men's modern fashion were found in Chinese-style apparel such as the magwae, queue, coolie hat and the Mao jacket. The Kimono and the samurai robe, both of which best represent Japanese apparel and the Japanese traditional patterns also had an influence on men's modern fashion Indian style clothing such as dhoti, veshti and lungi which cover the lower body, vajani as loose trousers, kurta of full-over tunic form and turban also had an effect as well. The men's modern fashion is also impacted by Middle Asian styles that includes the thobe, sirwaal, futah, which is sort of a skirt that is long enough to cover the calf and whose front parts overlap each other, turbans and the hempen hood which is fixed with the agal. Exotic elements such as animal skins, body painting, tattoos and head dresses found in African styles can also be found in men's modern fashion. Parts of North American style influence come from the applications of Indians' costume and head dress. The surveyed men's modern fashion of the South America style was represented by the applications of natives' costume and Andean tunic, loincloth and shawl. In all of the exotic styles found in men's modern fashion, historicity, eclecticism, aestheticism and nature-orientation are implied. They are the source of inspirations that promote changes and diversity in men's modern fashion.
In Japan, apartment housing occupies a great proportion of residence due to high population density like Korea. Although Korea and Japan are similar in big proportions of apartment housing, and apartment housing management systems and utilization behaviors, there are considerable differences. This paper examined Japanese public facilities and the status of public facility management and utilization, which differ from those in Korea. In order to analyze the status of public facilities from a perspective of management companies, a preliminary survey was conducted targeting apartment management companies in the top 100 and a field study on public facilities was conducted targeting chief directors and managers of individual housing facilities to look into public facility utilization methods, problems with public facility management, demands of residents, and utilization situations. Also, the present state of facility utilization and utilization promotion plans were investigated, based on the drawings of facilities collected. As the result, results were found in three respects; 'elements, related to building plans', 'elements, related to utilization promotion', and 'elements, related to facility remodeling, including changes of uses'. In relation to the use of public facilities in the future, a more active communication between managers and users would be needed for planning. Also, there would be a need to provide public facilities for visitors when there are events for both occupants and visitors in order to promote the use of facilities and management companies would have to share information of excellent facility models.
