  • Objectives: This study aimed to review the characteristics of personalized medicine and Korean medicine, and the correlation between personalized medicine and Korean medicine. Methods: We investigated various studies in PubMed, Scopus and domestic Korean medicine journals. In addition, we discussed the topic based on literature. Results: Western medicine developed as evidence-based medicine. However, its limitations are being reached, so a new paradigm of medicine is needed. As a result, personalized medicine has appeared. Recently, through the development of human genomics, personalized medicine has been researched on the basis of individual genetic characteristics. Korean medicine has developed with a unique holistic approach and treats not the disease itself but the patient's body. Its characteristic is well expressed through syndrome differentiation and treatment. Syndrome differentiation represents the nature of person-centered medicine and becomes the root of personalized medicine. Conclusions: Compared with genome-based personalized medicine of Western medicine, Korean medicine could be classified as syndrome-based personalized medicine. It would be great to apply this characteristic to clinical practices.

  • Objectives: Term standardization is important in every field of study. There have been several attempts to standardize terms in Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM). We undertook a review of Romanized prescription nomenclature of main titles in the Journal of Korean Medicine to analyze the methods of Romanized prescription nomenclature. Methods: We extract Romanized prescription names from Vol. 26, No. 4 to latest Issue Vol. 34, No. 2, Journal of Korean Medicine. Results: The Society of Korean Medicine has guidelines for Romanized prescription nomenclature. However, only 72 out of 142 Romanized prescription names conformed with the guidelines. In addition, 117 out of 142 names were italicized without guideline. Also, there were several ways of marking prescription names. Conclusions: For making information and easy searching of terms, we need normative regulations for Romanized prescription nomenclature by the Society of Korean Medicine.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the trend in the research on cirrhotic ascites using t herbal medicine. Methods: This review was conducted using six electronic databases(NDSL, KMBASE, Koreantk, KISS, KISTI, KoreaMed) with no restriction in year. The search term was 'liver cirrhosis', 'ascites', or 'cirrhotic ascites', 'herbal medicine', 'traditional Chinese medicine', and 'randomized clinical trial', and there was no restriction in year. The searched studies were analyzed according to the type of research. Results: After scanning the titles and abstracts, 13 articles were ultimately included. Of the outcome measures of 13 studies, effective rate, liver function test, and ascites regression time were included in the meta-analysis, which showed that the effective rate of herbal medicine-supportive treatment combination therapy was 1.27 times higher than that of supportive treatment alone, and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusions: We analyzed the trends of cirrhotic ascites treatment in herbal medicine through this review. It is necessary to conduct further studies, such as well-designed clinical trials based on the results from experimental research.
