Optimizing Work-In-Process Parameter using Genetic Algorithm (유전 알고리즘을 이용한 Work-In-Process 수준 최적화)

  • This research focused on deciding optimal manufacturing WIP (Work-In-Process) limit for a small production system. Reducing WIP leads to stable capacity, better manufacturing flow and decrease inventory. WIP is the one of the important issue, since it can affect manufacturing area, like productivity and line efficiency and bottlenecks in manufacturing process. Several approaches implemented in this research. First, two strategies applied to decide WIP limit. One is roulette wheel selection and the other one is elite strategy. Second, for each strategy, JIT (Just In Time), CONWIP (Constant WIP), Gated Max WIP System and CWIPL (Critical WIP Loops) system applied to find a best material flow mechanism. Therefore, pull control system is preferred to control production line efficiently. In the production line, the WIP limit has been decided based on mathematical models or expert's decision. However, due to the complexity of the process or increase of the variables, it is difficult to obtain optimal WIP limit. To obtain an optimal WIP limit, GA applied in each material control system. When evaluating the performance of the result, fitness function is used by reflecting WIP parameter. Elite strategy showed better performance than roulette wheel selection when evaluating fitness value. Elite strategy reach to the optimal WIP limit faster than roulette wheel selection and generation time is short. For this reason, this study proposes a fast and reliable method for determining the WIP level by applying genetic algorithm to pull system based production process. This research showed that this method could be applied to a more complex production system.

  • A conveyor system in corrugated manufacturing industry may be in charge of carriage/storage, and may control logistics flow and production activities of products in a manufacturing process which consists of corrugators, conveyors, and printer-slotter systems. It identifies problems that the conveyor system in this case study is overloaded and often operated manually. This research is to evaluate e the conveyor system though simulation model of technological evaluation beyond d eco-nomic and qualitative one. The rate of operation and the load of the conveyor system are used as parameters in the simulation. This paper suggests a direction to a new conveyor system implementation the basis of the results that are derived by new alternatives based on current model. The best alternative is supposed to be the number of conveyors and the operation times of the printer-slotter that may be increased at the same time.

  • Recently there has been huge efforts to improve performance in construction process by applying emerging techniques such as the Lean principle and Just-in-time concept. However, little achievement as we expected has come out in reality due to the lack of strategy to set a definite goal of the execution and differences of personal viewpoints on construction productivity. Accordingly, it is the most important to promote the circumstances for the construction process improvement by quantifying the goals of respective unit activity groups. This research explores feasible solutions for the improvement of construction projects performance by combining the six-sigma principle for the generic administrative innovation based on the idea of construction process performance. For this purpose, mutual comparisons of various current approaches are performed in an attempt to establish the advantages in applying six-sigma idea and to provide its fundamental strategy. Furthermore, through a case study with the simulation of applying six-sigma to a unit activity group in construction process, this paper verifies that the overall performance improves as the degree of sigma level gets advanced.

  • The Java programming language is designed for developing effective applications in a heterogeneous network environment. Major problem in Java is its performance. many attractive features of Java make the development of software easy, but also make it expensive to support ; applications written in Java are often much slower than their counterparts written in C or C++. To use Java`s attractive features without the performance penalty, sophisticated optimizations and runtime systems are required. Optimising Java bytecode has several advantages. First, the bytecode is independent of any compiler that is used to generate it. Second, the bytecode optimization can be performed as a pre=pass to Just-In-Time(JIT) compilation. Many attractive features of Java make the development of software easy, but also make it expensive to support. The goal of this work is to develop automatic construction of code optimizer for Java bytecode. We`ve designed and implemented a Bytecode Optimizer that performs the peephole optimization, bytecode-specific optimization, and method-inlining techniques. Using the Classfile optimizer, we see up to 9% improvement in speed and about 20% size reduction in Java class files, when compared to average code using the interpreter alone.

The Role of New Information and Communication Technologies in the Internationalization of Firms: A Case Study of Haier (기업의 국제화와 신 정보통신기술의 역할: 중국 Haier 기업을 사례로)

  • It is now widely recognized that new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have been changing the way tv which firms conduct their businesses. Examples are the application of enterprise resources planning (ERP) and business process reengineering (BPR) to increase the efficiency of internal resources management, adoption of Business-to-Business e-commerce (B2B e-com) to integrate supply chain, and invention of new marketing channels such as Business-to-Customer (B2C) e-com. These new ways of conducting businesses are believed to help firms to reduce transaction costs and increase productivity. As a result, new ICTs have played an important role in recent growth of many small firms into multi-functional and multi-product corporations and in their spatial expansion towards internationalization as well. This paper takes Haier in China as a case to study the role of new ICTs in the growth of firms and reveal how the new technologies have facilitated the expansion of Haier into a transnational corporation (TNC) by examining the internationalization process of the firm in relation to its adoption of new ICTs in the period from 1990 to 2002. The study reveals that the adoption of new Ins has helped Haier to integrate its functional units located in dozens of places across the world, which is essential to the internationalization of a firm, and to link closely together its worldwide suppliers and customers to achieve just-in-time (JIT) production and delivery. A Suggest on the Reclassification and Performance Criteria of Construction Material in Korean Public Procurement - Based on the Law of Purchasing Policy for Market Support of Small and Medium Business - (공공공사 직접구매 조달품목 재분류 및 성능기준 제안)

  • "The Law of purchasing policy for market support of small and medium business" was legislated to support small and medium industry by expanding purchase and revised consistently for the activation. And then the government made the public construction direct purchase compulsory about design items designated by president on small and medium business based on this law. However, secureing quality, tardiness and field material staff's heavy duty were arisen from approximately 120 direct market purchase items. The legislative intent of law is in accord with Win-Win growth between major company and small and medium business. However material staff who works in the field based on this law has difficulties with material securing quality, JIT(Just In Time), cost push. This study reclassified procurement items of "the direct market purchase system" reasonably and then suggested performance criteria for evaluation. The suggested result will contribute to vatalize the direct market purchase system.

  • In the case of the construction industry, the relationship between process and cost should be appropriately distributed so that the finished product can be delivered at the minimum fee within the construction period. At that time, it should be considered the size of the bridge, the construction method, the environment and production capacity of the factory, and the transport distance. However, due to various reasons that occur during the construction period, problems such as construction delay, construction cost increase, and quality and reliability degradation occur. Therefore, a systematic and scientific construction technique and process management technology are needed to break away from the conventional method. The prefab(Pre-Fabrication) is a representative OSC (Off-Site Construction) method manufactured in a factory and constructed onsite. This study develops a resource and process plan optimization system for the process management of the Nodular girder, a prefab bridge girder. A simulation algorithm develops to automatically test various variables in the personnel equipment mobilization plan to derive the optimal value. And, the algorithm was applied to the Paju-Pocheon Expressway Construction (Section 3) Dohwa 4 Bridge under construction, and the results compare. Based on construction work standard product calculation, actual input manpower, equipment type, and quantity were applied to the Activity Card, and the amount of work by quantity counting, resource planning, and resource requirements was reflected. In the future, we plan to improve the accuracy of the program by applying forecasting techniques including various field data.
