  • Operating medium or large scale industrial boilers in partial load condition, the burner should undergo the off-design points resulting in poor exhaust gas characteristics. To obtain the stable turn down performance, two or more burners can be used for the industrial boiler. In case multiple burners are adopted, the heat transfer can be enhanced by arranging the burners properly. In the present study, numerical simulations have been conducted for the combustion chamber of a 2 t/h class industrial boiler in order to clarify the heat transfer characteristics at the combustion chamber.

  • Switched reluctance motors and drives are increasingly used in high speed applications due to their robust mechanical structures, low inertia, and reduction in the rotor losses. The turn-on angle has to be advanced as the motor speed increases, but it may cause the starting problem in some rotor positions. In this paper, the characteristics of the maximum speed and input voltage with the advance angle at high speeds is investigated. To overcome the starting problem and reduce the torque ripple, conduction overlapping is added in adjacent phases. The effectiveness of conduction overlapping is verified through the simulation and experiments.

  • We have investigated the synthesis and field emission properties of high-quality double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) using a catalytic chemical vapor deposition method and a hydrogen arc discharge method. The produced carbon materials using a catalytic CVD method indicated high-purity DWCNT bundles free of amorphous carbon covering on the surface. By adopting a hydrogen arc discharge method, we could obtained high-purity DWCNTs in large-scale. DWCNTs showed low turn-on voltage and higher emission stability compared with SWCNTs.

Two Queue Single Server Model for the DQDB Man

  • This paper presents an approximate analytical model to estimate the mean packet walting times at the stations in the IEEE 802, 6 subnetwork of a metropolitan area network. Each station is modeled as a two queue single server system, which serves data packets and requests from downstream stations according to the DQDB protocol. The model estimates the mean waiting time of the requests and in turn, using the discrete time work conservation law, estimates the mean waiting time for packets. Simulation experiments shows that the model accurately works even under very high traffic loads.

  • The paper contains the data collection methods and procedures employed in the study to evaluate the operational effects of stop sign and signal control at diamond interchanges. An assessment of traffic control alternatives is described in terms of operational effects of queues and travel speed. Guidelines for installing signal control at diamond interchanges are provided in terms of internal volume, left turn proportion within internal volume, and the sum of internal and external volume. The specific traffic volume guidelines were developed based on a combination of these variables affecting operational performance.

  • Value at Risk(VaR) has been proven useful in finance literature as a tool of risk management(cf. Jorion(2001)). This article is concerned with introducing VaR to various Korean financial time series. Five daily data sets with sample period ranging from 2000 and 2004 such as KOSPI, KOSPI 200, KOSDAQ, KOSDAQ 50 and won-dollar exchange rate are analyzed using GARCH modeling and in turn VaR is obtained for each data.

  • A5J32-T4 and A5052-H32 dissimilar aluminum alloy plates with thickness of 1.6 and 1.5 mm were welded by friction stir lap welding (FSLW). The FSLW were studied using different probe length tool and various welding conditions which is rotation speed of 1000, 1500 rpm and welding speed of 100 to 600 mm/min and material arrangement, respectively. The effects of plunge depth of tool and welding conditions on tensile properties and weld nugget formation. The results showed that three type nugget shapes such as hooking, void, sound have been observed with revolutionary pitch. This plunge depth and material arrangement were found to effect on the void and hooking formation, which in turn significantly influenced the mechanical properties. The maximum joint efficiency of the FSLWed plates was about 90% compared to base metal, A5052-H32 when the A5052-H32 was positioned upper plate and plunge depth was positioned at near interface between upper and lower plates.

  • This paper introduces the spring-mounted odometer system which maintains the correct contact with the pipe wall and measures the distance along the pipe. The odometer wheel is designed to keep contact to the pipelines inner wall and to generate fifty rectangular pulses per one turn(l59.5681mm) during pigging. The pipeline has the defects in various types such as buckles, winkles, cracks, dents, welding point and so on. Specially, girth welding points which exist each 12m of the pipeline, much affects the operational environment of the odometer. The measurement error of the distance along the pipe is accumulated, for the measurement error of wheel's circumference and the pipeline inner environment. So, this paper proposes the method for the error compensation based on the analysis of the odometer's behavior around the girth welding point of pipe. The experimental results show that developed odometer system can be used for the intelligent pig with good performances.

초고압 차단기용 코일건 타입 조작기의 기술적 타당성 검토 (Feasibility Study of Coil Gun Type Actuator for High Voltage Circuit Breaker)

  • A novel coil gun type actuator has been proposed and tested for its possibility as an actuator for a high voltage circuit breaker by experimental method. The 20kJ capacitor bank with the electrolytic condensers was charged up to 500V and discharged to a couple of 100 turn coils connected with parallel through a thyristor switch. The repulsive force between coil and the actuator made by copper conductor of 20kg reached up to 23,000 N, and over 800J of energy was transferred to the kinetic energy of the conductor. The experimental results showed that the coil gun type actuator has a good possibility for the high voltage circuit breaker.
