Fracture resistance curves for concerned materials are required in order to perform elastic-plastic fracture mechanical analyses. Fracture resistance curve is built with J-integral values and crack extension values. The objective of this paper is to apply the load ratio method to the measurement of the crack length for the real scale pipe specimen. For these, the fracture test using the real scale pipe specimen and finite element analyses were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method and the load ratio method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the real scale pipe test. Finite element analyses about the compliance of the pipe specimen were executed for applying the load ratio method according to the crack length.

The dimension of forged part is different from that of die. Therefore, a more precise die dimension is necessarys to produce the precise part, considering the dimensional changes from forging die to final part. In this paper, both experimental and FEM analysis are performed to investigate the effect of several features including die dimension at each forging step and heat-treatment on final part accuracy in the closed-die upsetting. The dimension of forged part is checked at each stage as machined die, cold forged, and post-heat-treatment steps. The elastic characteristics and thermal influences on forging stage are analyzed numerically by the DEFORM-$2D^{TM}$. The effect of residual stress after heat-treatment on forged part could be considered successfully by using DEFOAM-$HT^{TM}$.

The influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture have been investigated for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, recently, the interests on local approaches reflecting micromechanical specifics are increased again due to rapid progress of computational environments. In this paper, the applicability of the local approaches has been examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. The ductile crack growth of nuclear carbon steels is assessed to verify the transferability among compact tension (CT) specimens with different in-plane size. At first, the basic material constants were calibrated for standard CT specimens and used to predict fracture resistance (J-R) curves of larger CT specimens. Then, the in-plane size effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with the experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the in-plane size effect should be considered for realistic engineering application and the damage models might be used as useful tool for ductile fracture evaluation.

During the last two decades, many researchers investigated influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, the local approach reflecting micro-mechanical specifics is one of effective methods to predict constraint effects. In this paper, the applicability of the local approach was examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN (Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman) and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. To achieve this goal, fracture resistance (J-R) curves of several types of compact tension (CT) specimens with various crack length, with various thickness and with/without 20% side- grooves were estimated. Then. the constraint effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the damage models might be used as useful tool for fracture toughness estimation and both the crack length and thickness effects should be considered for realistic structural integrity evaluation.

Recently the primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC) has occurred in the dissimilar metal weld region between pressurizer nozzle and safe-end in nuclear power plants(NPPs). As material of the pressurizer nozzle, SA508 Gr. 3 low alloy steel was used. F316L stainless steel and Alloy 82/182 were used as safe-end and weld metal, respectively. Although mechanical properties are needed for evaluation of the structural integrity against flaw in the material, material specification and standard don't supply those properties. Therefore, the present study conducted tensile and fracture toughness tests on SA508 Gr.3 and F316L stainless steel at ambient temperature and operating temperature of NPPs and reported the tested results.

In recent years, the subject of remaining life assessment has drawn considerable attention in the power generation industry. In power generation systems a variety of structural components, such as steam pipes, turbine rotors, and superheater headers, typically operate at high temperatures and high pressures. Thus a life prediction methodology accounting for fracture and rupture is increasingly needed for these components. For accurate failure assessment, in addition to the single parameter such as K or J-integral used in traditional fracture mechanics, the second parameter like T-stress describing the constraint is needed. The most critical defects in such structures are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface cracks in the welded piping-joints. In this work, selecting the structures of surface-cracked plate and straight pipe, we first perform line-spring finite element modeling, and accompanying elastic-plastic finite element analyses. We then present a framework for including constraint effects (T-stress effects) in the R6 failure assessment diagram approach for fracture assessment.

The K-R design curve is an engineering method of linear-elastic fracture analysis under plane-stress loading conditions. By the way, linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is valid only as long as nonlinear material deformation is confined to a small region surrounding the crack tip. Like general steels, it is virtually impossible to characterize the fracture behavior with LEFM, in many materials. Critical values of J contour integral or crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) give nearly size independent measures of fracture toughness, even for relatively large amounts of crack tip plasticity. Furthermore, the crack tip opening displacement is the only parameter that can be directly measured in the fracture test. On the other. the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) test is similar to CTOD experimentally. Moreover, the test is easier to measure the fracture toughness than other method. The shape of the CTOA curve depends on material fracture behavior and, on the opening configuration of the cracked structure. CTOA parameter describes crack tip conditions in elastic-plastic materials, and it can be used as a fracture criterion effectively. In this paper, CTOA test is performed for steel JS-SS400 hot-rolled thin plates under plane-stress loading conditions. Special experimental apparatuses are used to prevent specimens from buckling and to measure crack tip opening angle for thin compact tension (CT) specimens.

We report on the time dependent degradation of cell in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The photovoltaic performance of DSSC over a period of time was investigated in liquid electrolyte based on triiodide/iodide during six days. It was found that the short circuit current density ($j_{sc}$) of the cell dropped from 9.9 to $7mA/cm^2$ while efficiency (${\eta}$) of the cell decreased from 4.4 to 3.3%. The parameters corresponding to fundamental electronic and ionic processes in a working DSSC are determined from the electrochemical impedance spectrascopy (EIS) at open-circuit potential ($V_{oc}$). EIS study of the DSSC in the this work showed that the electron life time ${\tau}_r$ and chemical capacitance $C_{\mu}$ decreased significantly after six days. It was correlated the $j_{sc}$ and efficiency decreased after six days.

In order to analyze the elastic-plastic fracture behavior of a structure, the fracture resistance curve of the material should be known first. The standard CT specimen was used to obtain the fracture resistance curves of a piping system. However, it is known that the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen is very conservative to evaluate the integrity of a structure. Also the fracture resistance curve is effected by the specimen geometry and the dimensions because of the constraint effect. The objective of this paper is to be certain the conservativeness of the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen and to provide an additional safety margin. For these, the fracture tests using a real pipe specimen and the standard CT specimen test were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the pipe test. Also finite element analyses were performed with a CT specimen and a pipe in order to prove the additional safety margin. From the result of tests and analyses of the pipe and the standard CT specimen, it was observed that the fracture analysis with the standard CT specimen is conservative and the additional safety margin was proved.

Elastic-plastic fracture mechanics is popularly used for integrity evaluation of major components, however, it is not easy to extract standard specimens from operating facility. This paper examines how ductile fracture toughness is characterized by a small punch testing technique in conjunction with finite element analyses incorporating a damage model. At first, micro-mechanical parameters constituting Rousselier model are calibrated for typical nuclear materials using both estimated and experimental load-displacement (P-$\delta$) curves of miniaturized specimens. Then, fracture resistance (J-R) curves of relatively larger standard CT specimens are predicted by finite element analyses employing the calibrated parameters and compared with corresponding experimental ones. It was proven that estimated results by the proposed method using small punch specimen is promising and might be used as a useful tool for ductile crack growth evaluation.
